In this study, we investigated the thermal properties of corn-starch filled polybutylene succinate-adipate (PBS-AD) bio-composites. Thermal analysis (TA) is used to describe the analytical method for measuring the chemical property and weight loss of composite materials as a function of temperature. The thermal stability of corn-starch was lower than that of pure PBS-AD. As corn-starch loading increased, the thermal stability and degradation temperature of the bio-composites decreased and the ash content increased. It can be seen that the degree of compatibility and interfacial adhesion of the bio-composites decreased because of the increasing mixing ratio of the corn-starch. As the content of corn-starch increased, there was no significant change in the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the melting temperature (Tm) for the bio-composites. The storage modulus (E') and loss modulus (E") of the corn-starch flour filled PBS-AD bio-composites were higher than those of PBS-AD, because of the incorporation of corn-starch increased the stiffness of the bio-composites. At higher temperatures, the decreased storage modulus (E') of bio-composites was due to the increased polymer chain mobility of the matrix polymer. From these results, we can expect that corn-starch has potential as a reinforcing filler for bio-composites. Furthermore, we recommend using a coupling agent to improve the interfacial adhesion between corn-starch and biodegradable polymer.
In order to obtain more detailed information concerning the degradation of lignin in the oxygen alkali pulping single stage isothermal delignification of pine wood meal (Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.) was studied in the oxygen alkali system at five temperature level ($110^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$, $130^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$) for 60 min.. The rate constant, activation energy, oxygen and alkali consumption during the oxygen alkali delignification were determined by the kinetic method. The 2/5 of total lignin was eliminated at the start of the reaction. The delignification rate constant was about 3 times that of caustic soda pulping. The activation energy was about 1/3 lower than in caustic soda pulping. Like oxygen consumption, alkali consumption was also rapid early at the reaction and almost ceased after about 10 min.. The degradation reaction of lignin was strongly dependent upon the pH decrease of the cooking liquor by organic acid generated in pulping. The lignin in the oxygen alkali pulping degraded into lover molecular weight and had more hydrophillic properties. The methoxyl group decreased considerably at the first of oxygen alkali delignification, while the carbonyl, carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl group increased rapidly.

In this study, we evaluated optimal conditions for ethanol production of the spruce hydrolysate (SH) obtained from diethyl oxalate pretreatment. Fermentable sugar concentration in SH was 29.04 g/${\ell}$ except arabinose. Monosaccharides obtained from the oligomer degradation were mainly mannose (39.26 g/${\ell}$) and galactose (12.83 g/${\ell}$). Concentration of 5-HMF and furfural which are inhibitors on ethanol fermentation were 0.09 g/${\ell}$ and 0.04 g/${\ell}$ respectively. Concentration of acetic acid and total phenolic compounds in SH were 1.4 g/${\ell}$ and 2.83 g/${\ell}$. Ethanol production using hydrolysate was 11.7 g/${\ell}$ at optimal pH 6.0 after 48 h. Specific ethanol production was 0.15 (g/(${\ell}^*h$)) at pH 5.0 and 5.5. while that was 0.24 (g/(${\ell}^*h$)) at pH 6.0. Specific ethanol production has difference depend on initial pH for fermentation. Ethanol production was 14.3 g/${\ell}$ after 48 h when xylanase 20 IU was added in SH for degradation of oligomer during fermentation. It implied that ethanol production increased by 22.2% compare with control (without xylanase).
The credible measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) is among the most critical elements in UN-REDD (United Nations programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in Developing Countries). This study is intended to explore MRV potential in terms of UN-REDD opportunity cost estimation using satellite image for Mt. Geum-gang of North Korea. A visual interpretation were conducted to evaluate MRV conditions by sub-dividing or decomposing the images with different pixel size into a three types of hierarchical tree structure that helps dealing with spatial variability within each subarea. The permanent record of standard satellite remote sensing system demonstrated its capability of presenting area-wide visual evidences of MRV conditions in Mt. Geum-gang (such as the identification of forested area, degradation trends for forest space, three types of hierarchical land-cover and land use tree structure, carbon density in the landscape). Satellite data could be accepted as legally binding proof when it comes to REDD opportunity cost estimation since several cases exist where remote sensing has been used as legal evidence in ICJ (International Court of Justice) and UN resolution. It doesn't seem very difficult to comply with MRV requirements for UN-REDD opportunity cost calculation due to the probative value of satellite data. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference for Korea-based enterprises exploring REDD project sites and the carbon traders to ensure MRV potentials using satellite image in UN-REDD Opportunity Cost estimation.

Wood components, cellulose and lignin, are degraded simultaneously and the general outline for the complementary character of carbohydrates and lignin decomposition as well as the existence of enzymatic systems combining these processes is still valid. The degradatiion of free cellulose or hemicellulose into monosaccharides has long been known to be relatively simple, but the mechanism of lignin degradatiion wasn ot solved very clearly yet. Anyway the biodegradation of woold constituents is understood at present as an enzymatic process. Kigninolytic activity has been correlated with lignin and manganese peroxidases. At present the attention is paid to laccase. Laccase oxidizes lignin molecule to phenoxy radicals and quinones . This oxidation can lead to the cleavageo f C-C or C-O bonds in the lignin phenyl-propane subunits, resulting either in degradation of both side chains and aromatic rings, or in demethylation processes. The role of laccase lies in the "activation" of some low molecular weight mediators and radicals produced by fungal cultures. Such activated factors produced also in cooperation with other enzymes are probably exported to the wood environment where they work in degradation processes as the ' enzyme messengers." It is worth mentioning that only fungi possessing laccase show demethylating activity. Thus demethylation, the process important for ligninolysis, is probably caused exclusively by laccase. Under natural conditions laccase seems to work with other fungal enzymes , mediators and mediating radicals. It has shown the possibility of direct Bjrkman lignin depolymerization by cooperative activity of laccase and glucose oxidase.
This study was conducted to examineboth the type of wood decay and the degree of degradation for the waterlogged woods (Alnus spp. and Fraxinus spp., about 5,700~5,900 year old), which were excavated at Higokri, Pyungteak in the west-coastal region of Korea. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation indicated the degradations by soft rot and bacteria were common in both woods. Erosion bacteria attacked gradually and irregularly from the secondary layer to compound middle lamella and often produced the cavity which was similar to soft-rot cavity but much smaller ones. Tunneling bacteria decomposed mainly $S_2$ layer. Though of highly degraded walls, the cells almost kept the original form with intact lignin-rich middle lamella, which were saturated by water. No marine borer's trace indicated that the sealine rise in the western coast of Korean peninsula during the climate optimum period in the holocene might not be high enough to submerge the Higokri area which locates about 2 km from the present sealine.

In this study analysis the status of land cover change and land degradation of Tuul-Basin in Mongolia by using the Landsat satellite images that was taken in year of 1990, 2001 and 2011 respectively in the summer at the time of great growth of green plants. Analysis of the land cover change during time series data in Tuul-Basin, Mongolia and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index) and LST (Land Surface Temperature) algorithm are used respectively. As a result shows, there was a decrease of forest and green area and increase of dry and fallow land in the study area. It was be considered as trends to be a land degradation. In addition, there was high correlation between LST and vegetation index. The land cover change or vitality of vegetation which is taken in study area can be closely related to the temperature of the surface.
Microbes in forest are very important due to not only to enhance soil fertility but also maintain a healthy ecosystem by supplying the energy available to living organisms by producing various kinds of enzymes related to degradation of lignocellulosic biomass. In order to isolate a lignocellulosic biomass degrading bacterial strain from the Jurassic park located in Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology, We used the Luria-Bertani-Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) agar trypan blue method containing 0.4 % carboxymethyl cellulose and 0.01 % trypan blue. As a result, we isolated a bacterial strain showing both activity on the CMC and xylan. To identify the isolated strain, 16S rRNA sequencing and API kit analysis were used. The isolated strain turned out to belong to Bacillus species and then named Bacillus sp. GJY. In the CMC zymogram analysis, it showed that one active band of about 28kDa in size is present. Xylan zymogram analysis also showed to have one active band of about 25kDa in size. The optimal growth temperature of Bacillus sp. GJY was $37^{\circ}C$. The maximal activities of CMCase and xylanase were 12 hour after incubation. The optimal pH and temperature for CMCase were 5.0 and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas the optimal pH and temperature for xylanase was 4.0 and $40^{\circ}C$. Both activities for CMCase and xylanase showed to be thermally stable at 40and $50^{\circ}C$, while both activities rapidly decreased at over $60^{\circ}C$.

The few lignin biomarker studies conducted in tropical environments are hampered by having to use references signatures established for plants and soils characteristic of the temperate zone. This study presents a lignin biomarker analysis (vanillyls (V), p-hydroxyls (P), syringyls (S), cinnamyls (C)) of the dominant plant species and soil horizons as well as an analysis of the interrelated terrigenous organic matter (TOM) dynamics between vegetation and soil of the $Tapaj{\acute{o}}s$ river region, an active colonization front in the Brazilian Amazon. We collected and analyzed samples from 17 fresh dominant plant species and 48 soil cores at three depths (0-5 cm, 20-25 cm, 50-55 cm) from primary rainforest, fallow forest, subsistence agriculture fields and pastures. Lignin signatures in tropical plants clearly distinguish from temperate ones with high ratios of Acid/aldehyde of vanillyls ((Ad/Al)v) and P/V+S. Contrary to temperate environments, similarly high ratios in tropical soils are not related to TOM degradation along with pedogenesis but to direct influence of plants growing on them. Lignin signatures of both plants and soils of primary rainforest and fallow forest clearly distinguish from those of non-forested areas, i.e., agriculture fields and pastures. Attalea speciosa Palm trees, an invasive species in all perturbed landscapes of the Amazon, exhibit lignin signatures clearly distinct from other dominant plant species. The study of lignin signatures in tropical areas thus represents a powerful tool to evaluate the impact of primary rainforest clearing on TOM dynamics in tropical areas.

Agriculture and forest are basis for livelihood in Nepal while both sectors constitute around 40 percent of the national product and over two-thirds of the economically active population is dependent on agriculture. However, radical changes in land use, depletion in crops production and food availability are major threats due to loss of soil fertilityand severe environmental degradation. In this study, we used time series data from 1986/87 to 2005/06 about food crop production and population published by Government of Nepal, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Central Bureau of Statistics. Descriptive statistics and ArcGIS were used to assess and map the food security status of Nepalese Terai based on the local food demand and supply system. Food supply to demand ratio(FSDR) was the main idea of assessment. Our results showed that out of 20 districts, only 8 districts were categorised under secured food districts whereas 5 districts were still under food unsecured situation. The analysis further revealed that 7 districts had faced food deficit more than 8-16 times during the last 20 year periods. Data further showed that there was surplus food supply relative to the requirements dictated by FSDR. However, the average FSDR was less than 1.2(less than 20% surplus) exploring fact that most of the districts were not producing sufficient food to cope up the food shock and after 1995 it was relatively stagnant. Our prediction reveals that food supply in Terai even in the future would remain at almost the same level as now, and there will not more than 16-17% surplus by 2021 considering medium vibrant population growth. The findings thus, indicate that Terai may not be a food secure region in the future, even though the region is considered as a food storage house of Nepal. In addition, this paper suggests ways to make future comprehensive case studies more widely comparable in Terai, Nepal.
