The objective of this study was to estimate domestic potential wood supply according to geographical and forest management conditions. In order to separate available wood supply area, analysis was conducted by separating natural, theoretical, geographical and technical supply area. Natural supply area was separated by extract stocked land from forest using digital stock map. Theoretical, geographical and technical supply area was separated by considering protection area, slope, streamside and road. Growing stock was calculated by using species and age-class of digital stock map. Potential wood supply was estimated by calculating growing stock of technical supply area. The results of growing stock of each supply area was shown that growing stock was from 244,150 to 596,248 thousand $m^3$. According to the results of this study, it was found that potential wood supply are likely to be over- or underestimated depending on the considered level of geographical and forest management conditions. Provincial potential wood supply was highly ranked in order of Gyeongbuk, jeonnam, Gyeongnam and Gangwon province.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between land use patterns of riparian zones and water quality in the Geumho River watershed. A GIS database included digital land use maps (1:25,000), stream network extracted from digital topographic maps (1:5,000) and riparian zones maps by multi-buffering method. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to explain the relationship between the environmental conditions of a 30 meter buffer strip on each side and water quality. According to the result of investigation of riparian-level land use patterns, sub-watersheds on the lower Geumho River including Daegu metropolitan city were mainly developed as urban area such as residential, commercial and industrial ones, while sub-watersheds on the middle Geumho River and the main course of Nakdong River, agricultural ones such as a paddy, a dry field and an orchard. Meanwhile, the area-rate of riparian forests which play an important role in filtering nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment was estimated below the average 16%. The proportion of urban area in a 30 meter riparian bufferstrip had a negative correlation with water quality in each sub-watershed. But the proportion of forest area had a positive correlation with water quality. Henceforth, it is necessary to establish landscape planning for preparing and restoring the riparian buffer zones, concerning land form, soil type, the present land use pattern and economic aspects.

Forest occupied a part of natural ecosystem carries out a role of purifying air, preserving water resource, prevention of the breeding and extermination, recreation areas and etc that preserve and for me one's living environment. In this study, the classification for management of this forest is performed with Landsat TM Image. The classes are decided needle-leaf trees, broad-leaf trees, farming land and grass land, and water. When the TM digital images are classified on computer, water is represented in 7∼13 D.N. of 4th band. But the others is appeared similar mostly specific values so that must be done image processing. When the images compounded 2ed band and 3ed band are processed with ratio of enhancement. Needle-leaf treas is represented in l18∼136 D.N. of 1st band, broad-leaf trees in 72∼91 D.N. of 3ed band, farm land and glass land in 96∼120 of 3ed band. Forest Information is classified with M.L.C, an image classification method. The errors of needle-leaf trees, broad-leaf trees, farm land and grass land, and water are appeared each -7.43, +1.89,+7.58 and -2.04 as compared the digital image with investigation on the scene. Finally, these results are useful for classification of forest vegetation with Landsat TM Image.

This study is aimed to review the previous research accomplishments with analysis of problems and to suggest the counter plan for the watershed management and the ongoing research strategy. Phytoremediation provides a cost-effective techniques having a merit of low investment and maintenance cost. It could be one of the best techniques, which is an alternative plan to overcome economical situation and lack of experts in our country. In forest watershed affected by waste water and heavy metal pollutants should be controlled by vegetative remediation system, but the disposal techniques of harvested plant materials should be developed. Also, high degree areas of natural vegetation as a key model to recover the vegetation should be well conserved. It is important to restore forest continuity between upper stream and lower stream basin with the restoration of damaged in forest watershed. It is established to integrated protection system for land use and management plan and to natural environment evaluation methods affected by projects such as erosion control and developments in stream and forest. In addition, I suggest the continuous environmental monitoring system to treat the pollutions concerned.

Japan is one of the major forest-rich countries in the world with two thirds of its national territory covered with forests. The various functions of forests, including the prevention of global warming, conservation of national land, recharging of water resources, and maintenance of biotic diversity, play an important role in our safe, secure, and comfortable living. With the increasing national expectations on the role of forests to contribute to the prevention of global warming and "Accelerating forest carbon-sink measures to achieve Kyoto Protocol Commitment", it is necessary to make efforts toward a large-scale forest regeneration in order to secure an absorption of 13 million carbon tons through forest carbon sink for the achievement of the target of six percent reduction under the Kyoto Protocol. Most importantly, however, is to accelerate the measures for forests as absorption sources, including thinning and other forestry management activities. However, there is a situation, among others, where thinning is not implemented properly due to the decreased willingness of forest owners to manage forests, because of the long-term low demand for domestic lumber and lumber prices. In addition, forestry workers are aging and decreasing in number. Thus, the circumstances surrounding forestry are severe. It is necessary for the protection of our precious forests to make efforts to create and maintain forests with activities that involve citizens such as the "National Movement for Utsukushii Mori Zukuri(Fostering Beautiful Forests)".
Farm working also needs most of the labor on the weed management of the levee. Then, the research which controlled the weed in the weed was promoted in order to reduce this weed management. Required conditions for the levee vegetation from the viewpoint of the weed management are the following 4 points. (1) the prevention of erosion and landslide, (2) the improvement in the workability at the mowing, (3) the improvement and maintenance of the rural landscape, (4) the accessibility. Next, the plants becoming dominant species in devastated land and slope of river banks were compared through these 4 conditions, and the utility was examined. As the result, Imperata cylindrica Beauv., Shibataea kumasaca Nakai, Sasaella kogasensis Nakai var. gracillima S. Suzuki and Hedera canariensis Willd, seemed to be usable. Finally, weed management method for connecting for the reduction in the mowing work using these plants was presented.
This study identified the characteristics of changes in forest areas of North Korea's major regions (Gaesong, Goseong, Pyongyang, and Hyesan·Samsu) using data on degraded lands collected via monitoring by the National Institute of Forest Science. The data, spanning 1999 to 2018, were cross-analyzed to determine trends in land cover change, and hotspot analysis was conducted to confirm evident changes in the forest areas. The results showed that the areas of interest substantially transitioned to other land use types from 1999 to 2008. Contrastingly, the range of changes decreased from 2008 to 2018, with some areas regenerating into forests. Nevertheless, the hotspot analysis indicated that hotspots occurred more intensively in the outskirts of cities and forest edges from 2008 to 2018 than from 1999 to 2008. The analysis also showed that the aforementioned changes were caused by various aspects, depending on regional characteristics and social factors. This study can be used as a basic reference for decision-making on the selection of basic forest restoration targets and restoration methods in inter-Korean forest cooperation initiatives.

In Mountainous Districts Management Act of Korea Forest Service, slope and elevation criteria are operated to regulate the indiscriminate use of risky land parcels when forestland is converted to other land use types. However, there is a limitation in considering topographical variation with only such two indices in the land parcel. Therefore, in order to supplement insufficient criteria, the slope type standard was developed using Catena, and the ecological condition improved terrain standards. Firstly, the ratio of 'risky slope' in a target forestland parcel was defined to decrease the risk of disasters such as landslides. Secondly, the standard of the ecological location condition was proposed as ecological score by integrating age, diameter and soil depth classes in the target forestland parcels. Thereby, we could prepare reasonable standards that can reduce forestland disasters and ecological damages, as suggesting new topographical and ecological assessment methods for forestland use conversion.

In this study, a Ridge Distinction Program was developed to improve the elevation standard, which is one of standards for mountainous districts conversion permission regulated by the Management of Mountainous Districts Act. To distinguish mountainous districts from other land types, this program assumed that the lower end of the mountainous districts is the outlet points where catchment size is 30ha. Also the program used the halfway line between the ridge and the lower end of the mountainous districts to recognize the upper slope areas. To prevent potential errors within the classification process, the areas that were classified as non-mountainous districts by the current forest type map were removed. According to the classification results by using the developed program, the 58% of the mountainous districts ($696,300m^2$) was classified into the upper slope area, while the only 3% of the mountainous districts ($30,956m^2$) were classified by adopting the current standards for the mountainous districts conversion permission. This result shows that the size of the upper slope areas tends to be altered by the standards defining the area. Therefore, for better acceptance of the Ridge Distinction Program in the associated fields, it is necessary to prove the effectiveness of the program and to revise the current standards for the mountainous districts conversion permission.

Knowledge about how to stabilize soil structure is essential to conserve soil systems and maintain various biogeochemical processes through soil. In urban area, soil structural systems are degraded with inappropriate management and land use and become vulnerable to erosion. We analyzed the structural changes of surface soils with different land uses, i.e., forests, parks, roadside green area, riparian area, and farmlands (soybean fields), in the Anyang Stream Watershed in order to find the factors influencing the stability of soil structure and the implication for better management of surface soil. Soil organic matter contents of other land use soils were only 18~52% of that in forest soils. Soil organic matter increased the stability of soil aggregates in the order of soybean fields < roadsides < riparian < parks < forests and also reduced soil bulk density (increased porosity). The lowest stability of soybean field soils was attributed to the often disturbance like tillage and it was considered that higher stability of park soils comparing to other land use soils except forests was owing to the covering of soil surface with grass. These results suggest that supply of soil organic matter and protection of soil surface with covering materials are very important to increase porosity and stability of soil structure.
