In order to consider the prevention countermeasure to the occurrence of forest fires, analysing characteristic of the past forest fire data is needed. This research analyzed distribution and characteristics of forest fires damage over 30 ha based on statistics data of forest fires in Korea between 1975 and 2010. As a result, the number of forest fires damage over 30 ha as 23 was most occurred in 1978. Forest fires show an upward tendency from 1970 to 2000. Forest fires of 30 ha~50 ha damaged area was most occurred. Forest fire in Gangwon province was occurred as the number of total 66 (37.0 %). Gangwon province was superior in point density analysis. The number of forest fire occurrence over 30 ha was most high to 114 (63.0 %) in April and to 44 (24.3 %) in Sunday. The occurrence number of forest fire and damage caused by forest fire is increasing more and more since 1975, appropriate authorities can use effectively in devising policy for forest fire prevention from this result.
Forest fire ignition and spread characteristics are needed as basic data in fire management. Slope aspect of ignition point, spread direction, and wind direction at that time were analyzed and regression equations were proposed for predicting burned area, fire perimeter, head spread rate, and flank spread rate using combustion time using 101 forest fires broken out between 2007 and 2009 spring. 57% forest fires of investigated numbers were ignited in south, southwest, and southeast aspects and 68% of forest fires were spreaded to east, southeast, and northeast influenced by westerly wind. About 11.8ha forest was burned and 0.5km fire perimeter increase was predicted per hour. Head and flank spread rate were calculated 0.13km and 0.05km, respectively.
Generally, the deterioration characteristics of a conductor affected by a forest fire can be analyzed through simulation of a forest fire and results of the simulation. However, there are little accomplishments of that kind of simulation applied to the power transmission, and there aren't actual analysis for a sample exposed in a forest fire. This paper deals with the experimental results that apply to a new wire by an artificial flame equipment because it's difficult to directly analyze the characteristic by a forest fire. Also, after an artificial flame is applied to a normal ACSR for various experimental conditions, changes of mechanical and material characteristics of the ACSR were analyzed by the surface inspection and load-tests of tensile of the ACSR. Then, the database will be made to made to predict the state of deteriorated wires by a forest fire using those two data, and data necessary to diagnose the life state of an ACSR wire affected by a forest fire will be given.
A forest fire was one of the huge disasters and damaged human lifes and a properties. Therefore, many countries operated forest fire forecasting systems which developed from forest fire records, weather data, fuel models and etc. And many countries also estimated future state of forest fire using a long-term climate forecasting like GCMs and prepared resources for future huge disasters. In this study, we analyzed relationships between forest fire occurrence and meteorological factors (the minimum temperature ($^{\circ}C$), the relative humidity (%), the precipitation (mm), the duration of sunshine (hour) and etc.) for developing a estimating tools, which could forecast forest fire regime under future climate change condition. Results showed that forest fires in this area were mainly occurred when the maximum temperature was $10{\sim}200^{\circ}C$, when the relative humidity was 40~60%, and when the average wind speed was under 2m/s. And forest fires mainly occurred at 2~3 day after rainfall.
It is necessary to examine relationship between spatial patterns of forest types and characteristics of forest fires for efficient management of fire and forest. By the ecoregions of South Korea, we computed landscape indices for whole types of forests(landscape level) and pine forests(class level), and analyzed characteristics of forest fires using statistics of forest fires from 1991 to 2006. We performed canonical correlation analysis to model the relationship between the landscape indices and the statistics of forest fires. At landscape level, forest patches were larger and more complex in the ecoregions which had higher percentage of forest area. At class level, pine forest patches were more complex and closer to neighbor patches in the coastal ecoregions. The ecoregions including metropolitan areas and cities had more frequent fire occurrences per 1,000ha, while mountainous coastal ecoregions had more burned areas and faster spread of fire growth rate. The canonical correlation between the landscape indices for pine forests and the statistics of forest fires was statistically significant at the 0.05 level and explained more than 70% of the variation in fire variables. The results showed that combustion time per fire was longer in the ecoregions which had larger and more aggregated pine forest patches.
Since 1973, we attain a successful achievement of nation-wide afforestation such as a thick forest and heaped-up leaves. However, the higher of the formation density in forest, the more dangerous to be a large-scale forest fire whenever fire occurs. According to the type of forest in the country, 42% of the forest is occupied by conifer forest that are highly flammable, and the distribution of forest age is in a transition period from immature forest to mature one. And the structure is too weak to the forest fire for the occurrence and spread because there are too many scrub and shrub trees in the forest. As a matter of course, it is on the increase of the thinning-forest that can shift the forest structure from a weak on forest fire to a strong one nowaday. In other words, thinning-forest has primary purposes such as the promotion of producing forest trees, production of excellent timbers, and build-up of public forest area. Furthermore, in some reports, the reduction of ladder fuel by eliminating the vertical/horizontal fuel in a forest and ensuring spaces in the forest can decrease the occurrence of forest fire and the risk of spread of burning as by-effect. Therefore, this study is designed to clarify the relation with the risk of forest fire by an on-spat-investigation of the characteristics of forest composition on the thinning and the non-thinning area.

This study proposes the experimental methods which shows various guidelines for systematic study of surface forest fuels. The thermal characteristics of surface fire fuels such as Quercus Variabilis and Pinus Densiflora fallen leaves are measured using TGA and Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter. Both of them are common species of Korean forest. Also the combustion characteristics of surface fire fuels are analysed according to the methods which are commonly used in Pool Fire analysis. The measured parameters are gas velocity, temperature, flame height, heat release rate and mass loss rate. A system is designed to simulate the surface fire. Methods and results are shown for the application of forest fire study.
This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of bird communities between before and after forest fire in tropical deciduous Dipterocarp forest of Mondulkiri protected forest of the northeastern Cambodia from January to April 2009. The DBH distribution of trees were different in each DBH class. Most of the trees (> 80%) were belong to < 30 cm DBH. After the forest fire, coverage of understory layers were dramatically decreased by the fire. Total 64 species of birds were recorded, and 64 and 46 species of birds were observed before and after the fire, respectively. Observed number of individuals of bee-eaters, treepies, kingfishers, lapwings, herons, junglefowl, peafowl, prinias and warblers were decreased after the fire. The decrease of those species would be related with the change of habitat condition, such as decrease of water amount and understory coverage. For the management and conservation of junglefowls, peafowls, prinias and warblers, understory vegetation should be maintained in Mondulkiri protected forest, northeastern Cambodia.
It is important to understand the patterns of forest fire in terms of effective prevention and suppression activities. In this study, the monthly forest fire occurrences and their burned areas were investigated to enhance the understanding of the patterns of forest fire in Korea. The statistics of forest fires in Korea, 1970 through 2005, built by Korea Forest Service was analyzed by using time series analysis technique to fit ARIMA models proposed by Box-Jenkins. The monthly differences in forest fire characteristics were clearly distinguished, with 59% of total forest fire occurrences and 72% of total burned area being in March and April. ARIMA(1, 0, 1) was the best fitted model to both the fire accurrences and the burned area time series. The fire time series have a strong relation to the fire occurrences and the burned area of 1 month and 12 months before.
