Food preferences of foreigners residing in Korea (주한 외국인의 한국 식당의 음식 및 써비스에 대한 의견조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate foreigners' preferences in Korean foods as served in Korean restaurants. A questionnaire was constructed for this study and sent to foreigners residing in the Seoul area. The study showed that when they have a chance to choose a restaurant for eating out, the decision to choose a Korean-Style restaurant is made on the basis of the special flavor of Korean food as well as the desire to experience Korean traditional food culture. Korean style barbecue, mixed vegetables, and dumplings are preferred by most foreigners. Beef rib stew and pibimbab were also selected frequently. Muk, maeuntang, rice cakes, cold noodles and sea weeds were not preferred.

  • Korea is increasingly vulnerable to disasters due to changes in economic and social structure. In particular, there are a number of disadvantaged people, such as elderly people, disabled people, basic livelihood recipients, foreigners, multicultural families, etc. who are vulnerable to social problems due to aging, polarization and internationalization. These vulnerable people to disaster have difficulties in acquiring disaster information and to respond promptly by self-help. Of course, recent studies on vulnerable people to disaster have been steadily increasing, but discussions about foreigners have been relatively inadequate. This has led to a lack of understanding about the actual situation of disaster and coping methods. Once general situations set in, foreigners staying in Korea will suffer from a vicious cycle of policy-making from the viewpoint of Korean and difficulties in obtaining relevant information. In this study, we conducted in-depth interviews on the recognition and acquisition path of disaster information for foreign workers living in Korea. Based on the results of the interviews, we derived implications for practical information, such as ways to understand and actively utilize information media frequently visited by foreign workers in Korea.

Difference in Management Between Native Koreans and Foreigners with Penetrating Wounds In the Emergency Room (관통상으로 응급실을 내원한 내국인과 외국인 환자의 진료의 차이)

  • Purpose: With the increasing numbers of foreign residents in Korea, the need for an emergency medical care system for foreign patients seems to be growing. Sometimes, a foreigner admitted to an emergency room is not treated sufficiently due to the absence of insurance, facility in the Korean language, and a guardian. The management of a foreigner with trauma in the ER is difficult due to various problems such as social and economic status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current management status of foreigners with penetrating wounds in the emergency room. Methods: This study is an analysis of 580 patients that were diagnosed with penetrating wounds in one teaching Hospital from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008. We analyzed results according to nationality, alcohol ingestion, intentional or accidental trauma, trauma mechanism, injury severity, management time in the ER, and outcome in the ER. Results: Of the total 580 patients, 486 patients (83.8%) were native Koreans and 94 patients (16.2%) were foreigners. According to the Revised Trauma Score, the average score of native Korean patients was 7.808, and the average score of foreign patients was 7.638. Of native Korean patients, 22.6% had knife wounds while 38.3% of foreign patients did. Of native Korean patients, 17.3% experienced intentional trauma while 33.0% of the foreign patients did. Of native Korean patients, 22.5% had ingested alcohol while 49.4% of the foreigners had. Of native Korean patients, 10.5% were admitted while 7.6% of the foreign patients were. Of native Korean patients, 14.2% were discharged against medical advice (DAMA), while 18.5% of foreign patients were. Of native Korean patients, 1.2% ran away while 8.7% of the foreign patients did. Conclusion: Stabbing was the most common cause of penetrating wounds in foreigner patients in this study. Intentional trauma was more common in foreigners with penetrating wounds than in native Koreans. The severity was higher in foreigners with penetrating wounds than it was in native Koreans, and patients who ran away or were discharged against medical advice were more commonly foreigners with penetrating wounds. Social insurance or policy is needed for the management of foreigners with penetrating wounds.

Analysis of Prejudice Toward Foreigners by Nurses and Physicians in Korea (국내 의료인의 외국인에 대한 편견)

  • Purpose: To improve the cultural competency of nurses and physicians in Korea by disclosing their degree of prejudice toward foreigners who were major target of international medical tourists. Method: A descriptive research design was employed. Data were collected from a total of 458 nurses and physicians at general hospitals in Korea. Subjects completed questionnaires on their demographic information and prejudice toward foreigners from a cognitive, emotional, and behavioral perspective. Results: While there was a positive attitude toward Caucasian Americans and Japanese, there was a negative prejudice toward Chinese and African Americans. There was an especially high and negative prejudice from a cognitive and behavioral perspective toward Chinese. There was a significant difference in the level of prejudice according to the education level, workplace, and multi-cultural education of Korean health professionals. Conclusion: It is necessary to investigate the negative prejudice toward foreigners of specific races or countries with cautious consideration. We also recommend the development and application of strategies to improve the multi-cultural competency of Korean nurses and physicians.

Consumer survey of foreigners and Koreans about Korean and Thai foods and restaurants (한국음식과 태국음식에 대한 국내.외국인의 소비자 의식비교)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the consumer perceptions of Koreans and foreigners towards Korean and Thai foods and restaurants. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 129 foreign residents and 291 Koreans who have been members or the Thai travel association in the seoul area. statistical data analysis was performed using the SPSS v 10.0 program. From the evaluation of Korean and Thai foods and restaurants by foreigners, Thai foods/restaurants showed significantly higher ratings in the attributes of 'Food appearance', 'Food smell', 'Overall food taste', and 'Exotic food taste' In the attributes of 'Use of various food seasonings', 'Variety of food ingredients', 'Variety of menu', 'Food sanitation', and 'Fast restaurant service', Thai food/restaurants showed higher ratings than Koreanfood/restaurants. Korean foods were considered more salty than Thai foods. However, overall satisfaction of Thai and Korean foods/restaurants was similar at about '3.7' points on the 5-point Likert scale. From the evaluation by Koreans, there were no significant differences in the attributes of 'Food appearance', 'Food smell', and 'overall food taste'. however. the rating or 'Exotic food taste' was significantly higher in Thai foods. In the attributes of 'Use of various food seasonings', 'Variety of food ingredients', and 'Variety of menu', Thai food/restaurants showed higher ratings than Korean food/restaurants. Interestingly, the evaluation of sanitation of restaurants was opposite to that of foreigners.

Context Based Real-time Korean Writing Correction for Foreigners (외국인 학습자를 위한 문맥 기반 실시간 국어 문장 교정)

  • Educating foreigners in Korean language is attracting increasing attention with the growing number of foreigners who want to learn Korean or want to reside in Korea. Existing spell checkers mostly focus on native Korean speakers, so they are inappropriate for foreigners. In this paper, we propose a correction method for the Korean language that reflects the contextual characteristics of Korean and writing characteristics of foreigners. Our method can extract frequently used expressions by Koreans by constructing syllable reverse-index for eojeol bi-gram extracted from corpus as correction candidates, and generate ranked Korean corrections for foreigners with upgraded edit distance calculation. Our system provides a user interface based on keyboard hooking, so a user can easily use the correction system along with other applications. Our system improves the detection rate for foreign language users by about 45% compared to other systems in foreign language writing environments. This will help foreign users to judge and correct their own writing errors.

Foreigners' Perceptions of Hanbok -Focusing on China, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam- (외국인의 한복에 대한 인식 -중국, 미얀마, 네팔, 베트남을 중심으로-)

  • This study used the Q-methodology to identify and categorize the types of subjective perceptions of Korean hanbok among foreigners currently living in Korea, and to explore the characteristics of each type. We used the QUANL PC program to analyze the data. We categorized foreigners' perceptions of hanbok into three types. The first type comprised the "hanbok experience novice tradition affirming" individuals who thought hanbok was beautiful, affirming Korean culture and traditional clothing. They encountered hanbok for the first time upon arriving in Korea. The second type was the "design preference positive change". These individuals thought hanbok's design was beautiful and belived Korea's image improved because of hanbok. The third type was the "change-seeking tradition negative". This group believed that hanbok was not traditional Korean clothing and required modernizing. The first category comprised mostly individuals from Nepal, the second category was Myanmar, and the third category was China. Thus, different nationalities have different perceptions of hanbok. Future research should explore how foreigners from diverse nationalities perceive hanbok and coduct a comparative analysis based on nationality.

Foreigners' Housing Market and Transnational Housing Filtering Process: Focusing on the Case Study of Korean-Chinese (외국인 주택 시장과 초국가적 주택 여과 과정: 조선족 사례를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to reveal that the changes in the population and housing consumption of foreigners, which are constantly undergoing structural changes, affect both the housing market of home and host country. The cause and the change of foreigners' housing market in Seoul were analyzed to be that the foreigners' continuous inflows occurred due to the 'fixed effect of rent' on the rental market, which is different from the domestic housing market. Korean-Chinese, who tend to be circular migration, make the current concentration of the housing market. Meanwhile, Korean-Chinese, who have experienced migration from Korea, emerged as major housing consumers, causing a real estate boom in Yanji City. Housing investment by Korean-Chinese is concentrated in the 'West' from Yanbian University, closely related to the city's urban planning that affects housing supply. This transnational housing consumption of immigrants connects the housing market of home and host country, in turn, causes the filtering process in the two countries simultaneously, which results the 'transnational housing filtering process'.

A Study on Efficient Work Force Supply-Demand According to the Employment Permit System for Foreigners (외국인 고용허가제 도입에 따른 효율적 노동인력 수급에 관한 연구)

  • The employment permit system for foreigners, which stresses introduction of foreign work force in a legal manner rather than in the position of being trainees, is anticipated to efficiently improve introduction and the overall management system of foreign work force and related difficulties such as illegal alien problems, absurdity on sending laborers overseas. In this paper, a prospective model of supply and demand of work force has been developed basing on various categories of industries and patterns about nationally practical foreign employees to look over efficient supply and demand of work force suiting employment of foreigner among foreign work force policies. To propose the prospective model, we have derived industry- and pattern-related matrixes of foreign laborers basing on Inter-Industry Analysis Method put forth by Professor Leontiyef in 1930, and through the derived matrix assessed repercussions concerning overall domestic industries and foreigner types and decided yearly weight; the capacity of supply and demand of foreign laborers can be compared through proposed statistical estimation and government estimation by combining the determined weight with yearly incomes of foreign laborers. This paper has thoroughly considered the particularity of our employment permit system for foreigners and applied the Weibull distribution and incorporated the dependence of foreign laborers during the limited period of 3 years to the industry relation analysis, ultimately proposing an efficient supply and demand method about domestic foreign work force.

Study on Modern Food Culture History through Records from Foreigners' Chosun Dynasty Travel in the Enlightenment Period (서양인의 조선여행 기록문을 통한 근대 식생활사(食生活史) 연구)

  • The study presented attempts to analyze and categorize Chosun's food ingredients and culture through a Western perspective based on 32 representative Western documents pertaining to old Korea. Before modernization, Westerners visited Chosun during their visits to old China or Japan. Westerners were most active in Chosun from the open port period to the annexation of Korea to Japan occupation. They were teachers, missionaries, diplomats, and doctors visiting Chosun with personal goals. In 31 book traveler's journal, it records Chosen's mainly produced ingredients, such as grains, spices, fruits, cabbage, chicken, and chestnuts; foods from Chosen include kimchi, soup, and tofu. Foreigners especially liked foods made of eggs and chicken, but they did not enjoy Chosun's lack of sugar and dairy. Thirty-one book foreigners' records describe Chosun's Ondol, kitchen, crock, fermented foods, low dining tables, and chopsticks. Chosun people liked dog meat, unrestrained drinking culture, sungnyung, and tea culture. Foreign documentation on Chosun's food culture allows modern scholars to learn about Chosun people's lifestyles, as if their lives were a vivid picture.
