Difference in Management Between Native Koreans and Foreigners with Penetrating Wounds In the Emergency Room (관통상으로 응급실을 내원한 내국인과 외국인 환자의 진료의 차이)

  • Purpose: With the increasing numbers of foreign residents in Korea, the need for an emergency medical care system for foreign patients seems to be growing. Sometimes, a foreigner admitted to an emergency room is not treated sufficiently due to the absence of insurance, facility in the Korean language, and a guardian. The management of a foreigner with trauma in the ER is difficult due to various problems such as social and economic status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current management status of foreigners with penetrating wounds in the emergency room. Methods: This study is an analysis of 580 patients that were diagnosed with penetrating wounds in one teaching Hospital from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008. We analyzed results according to nationality, alcohol ingestion, intentional or accidental trauma, trauma mechanism, injury severity, management time in the ER, and outcome in the ER. Results: Of the total 580 patients, 486 patients (83.8%) were native Koreans and 94 patients (16.2%) were foreigners. According to the Revised Trauma Score, the average score of native Korean patients was 7.808, and the average score of foreign patients was 7.638. Of native Korean patients, 22.6% had knife wounds while 38.3% of foreign patients did. Of native Korean patients, 17.3% experienced intentional trauma while 33.0% of the foreign patients did. Of native Korean patients, 22.5% had ingested alcohol while 49.4% of the foreigners had. Of native Korean patients, 10.5% were admitted while 7.6% of the foreign patients were. Of native Korean patients, 14.2% were discharged against medical advice (DAMA), while 18.5% of foreign patients were. Of native Korean patients, 1.2% ran away while 8.7% of the foreign patients did. Conclusion: Stabbing was the most common cause of penetrating wounds in foreigner patients in this study. Intentional trauma was more common in foreigners with penetrating wounds than in native Koreans. The severity was higher in foreigners with penetrating wounds than it was in native Koreans, and patients who ran away or were discharged against medical advice were more commonly foreigners with penetrating wounds. Social insurance or policy is needed for the management of foreigners with penetrating wounds.

Key Elements for the Improvement of Healthcare Services for Foreigners in Korea: A Delphi Study (외국인 의료서비스 향상을 위한 주요 요소: 델파이 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the key elements for the improvement of healthcare services for foreigners in Korea. Method: Delphi technique was used for this study. As the members of an expert panel for this study, 32 healthcare professionals, who were physicians, nurses, administrators, and care coordinators, with at least 6 months of experiences in international clinics and healthcare services in five metropolitan areas in Korea participated. Data collections were conducted three times from August to October, 2009. The priority and the importance were analyzed using descriptive statistics in SPSS Win 15.0. Result: The key element selected most frequently by the experts was the 'Healthcare providers' abilities for foreign languages' followed by 'Guidelines for facing medical accidences and disputes', 'Information and guide for healthcare services written in English', 'Informed consent preventing medical disputes', 'System of healthcare service fees for foreigners'. Conclusions: The key elements for the improvement of healthcare services for foreigners in Korea were mostly the requirements for effective communication with the foreign clients and the systemic support. The key elements identified in this study can be applied usefully for the development of strategies to improve the quality of healthcare services for foreigners.

Food preferences of foreigners residing in Korea (주한 외국인의 한국 식당의 음식 및 써비스에 대한 의견조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate foreigners' preferences in Korean foods as served in Korean restaurants. A questionnaire was constructed for this study and sent to foreigners residing in the Seoul area. The study showed that when they have a chance to choose a restaurant for eating out, the decision to choose a Korean-Style restaurant is made on the basis of the special flavor of Korean food as well as the desire to experience Korean traditional food culture. Korean style barbecue, mixed vegetables, and dumplings are preferred by most foreigners. Beef rib stew and pibimbab were also selected frequently. Muk, maeuntang, rice cakes, cold noodles and sea weeds were not preferred.

Context Based Real-time Korean Writing Correction for Foreigners (외국인 학습자를 위한 문맥 기반 실시간 국어 문장 교정)

  • Educating foreigners in Korean language is attracting increasing attention with the growing number of foreigners who want to learn Korean or want to reside in Korea. Existing spell checkers mostly focus on native Korean speakers, so they are inappropriate for foreigners. In this paper, we propose a correction method for the Korean language that reflects the contextual characteristics of Korean and writing characteristics of foreigners. Our method can extract frequently used expressions by Koreans by constructing syllable reverse-index for eojeol bi-gram extracted from corpus as correction candidates, and generate ranked Korean corrections for foreigners with upgraded edit distance calculation. Our system provides a user interface based on keyboard hooking, so a user can easily use the correction system along with other applications. Our system improves the detection rate for foreign language users by about 45% compared to other systems in foreign language writing environments. This will help foreign users to judge and correct their own writing errors.

Analysis of Operational Characteristics and Substantiality Plan of Inpatient Diets for Foreigners in Hospitals (의료기관의 외국인 대상 환자식 운영 현황 및 내실화 방안 분석)

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the operational characteristics and to explore the substantiality plan of inpatient diets for foreigners in hospitals. Questionnaires were mail-delivered to 128 hospitals, and a total of 62 questionnaires were usable with a response rate of 48.4 percent. Statistical data analysis was completed using SPSS Win 11.0 for descriptive analysis, independent t-test, and ${\chi}^2$ test. Results can be summarized as follows. The average number of inpatient meals for foreigners in the last 6 months were 405 and 53 for general therapeutic diets and special therapeutic diets, respectively. The rates of hospitals with an exclusive department and exclusive staff for foreign inpatients were 48.4% and 53.2%, respectively. Major nationalities of foreign inpatients were China (37.5%) and Russia (31.3%), and their major medical departments were internal medicine (43.9%) and surgery (39.0%). The number of hospitals that provided inpatient diet only for foreigners was 42 (72.4%) and influencing factors were number of permitted beds (P<0.05), an exclusive department (P<0.001), and exclusive staff (P<0.01). The main type of menu was USA European style (61.1%), and the price of inpatient meals for foreigners was mostly \10,000~\25,000 (62.0%). As 75.9% of hospitals did not possess dietary slip manuals for foreigners, the case of preparing inpatient meals for foreigners in the form of a general therapeutic diet partially-modified according to disease was the majority (55.4%). Dietitians felt the need for nutrition management guidelines and dietary slip manuals (47.3%) as a substantiality plan of inpatient diets for foreigners. There is a need for exclusive foodservice standards for foreign inpatients in the changing medical environment.

A Comparative Analysis on Image Structures of Jeju 'Oreum' between Koreans and Foreigners (제주 '오름'에 대한 내국인과 외국인의 경관이미지 비교 분석)

  • This study conducted a comparative analysis between Koreans and foreigners on how they feel of the 'Oreum' so that the data could be used to conserve and utilize 'Oreum' as a brand of Jeju, which is one of the natural and original sceneries of the island along with Halla Mountain. Four aerial photo slides were selected to be assessed among 18 overlooked views of 'Oreums' through quasi-preliminary and preliminary surveys. The assessment group was divided into native and foreigner groups. Image and preference were measured based on 7 step categorization on 26 adjectives, and factor analysis was implemented. The selected factors from factor analysis reflected that calmness was recognized as common image identification variable to natives and foreigners. However, foreigners choose 'dynamics', 'peculiarity' and 'grandeur' in order to explain the image while Koreans selected words in the order of 'attractiveness', 'grandeur', 'dynamics' and 'peculiarity'. This means Koreans identify the image of 'Oreum' as absolute beauty while foreigners see the dynamics and relative peculiarity as its attractive point. As a result of factor score, preference and multiple regression analysis, Koreans selected 'calmness', 'attractiveness' and 'dynamics' as important variables to explain preference. On the other hand, foreigners choose 'dynamics' and 'calmness' as well as 'evenness', 'peculiarity' and 'simplicity'. This represents that foreigners are highly influenced by the structural peculiarity and simplicity on the image preference.

The Effect of Foreigner's Ethnic Food Attitudes on Purchasing Intentions of Korean Foods (외국인의 에스닉 푸드에 대한 태도가 한식 구매 의도에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to globalize Korean foods successfully, it is necessary to understand foreigners' attitudes about ethnic foods and how foreigners perceive Korean foods. It would be valuable to survey the degree of interest from foreigners when purchasing Korean foods. Thus, a survey was performed on the most common tourists in Korea, the Japanese, Chinese and Americans. 313 respondents completed the survey on ethnic foods (16 questions), purchasing intention of Korean foods (3 questions), and socio-demographic conditions (9 questions). Factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to identify the indicators of attitudes toward ethnic foods. Correlation analysis was conducted to confirm the relation between attitudes toward ethnic foods and Korean food purchasing intention. From the results of factor analysis, 5 factors emerged from the 13 out of 16 questions; and were labeled new food seekers, ethnic food seekers, familiarity seekers, new taste seekers and challenge seekers. Items were analyzed to determine the differences according to nationality by using the ANOVA, and it showed that Americans have the highest Korean food purchasing intentions. The regression analysis indicated that attitude factors on ethnic foods, new foods and new taste seekers are strongly related to Korean food purchase intentions.

Analysis of Prejudice Toward Foreigners by Nurses and Physicians in Korea (국내 의료인의 외국인에 대한 편견)

  • Purpose: To improve the cultural competency of nurses and physicians in Korea by disclosing their degree of prejudice toward foreigners who were major target of international medical tourists. Method: A descriptive research design was employed. Data were collected from a total of 458 nurses and physicians at general hospitals in Korea. Subjects completed questionnaires on their demographic information and prejudice toward foreigners from a cognitive, emotional, and behavioral perspective. Results: While there was a positive attitude toward Caucasian Americans and Japanese, there was a negative prejudice toward Chinese and African Americans. There was an especially high and negative prejudice from a cognitive and behavioral perspective toward Chinese. There was a significant difference in the level of prejudice according to the education level, workplace, and multi-cultural education of Korean health professionals. Conclusion: It is necessary to investigate the negative prejudice toward foreigners of specific races or countries with cautious consideration. We also recommend the development and application of strategies to improve the multi-cultural competency of Korean nurses and physicians.

Study on Modern Food Culture History through Records from Foreigners' Chosun Dynasty Travel in the Enlightenment Period (서양인의 조선여행 기록문을 통한 근대 식생활사(食生活史) 연구)

  • The study presented attempts to analyze and categorize Chosun's food ingredients and culture through a Western perspective based on 32 representative Western documents pertaining to old Korea. Before modernization, Westerners visited Chosun during their visits to old China or Japan. Westerners were most active in Chosun from the open port period to the annexation of Korea to Japan occupation. They were teachers, missionaries, diplomats, and doctors visiting Chosun with personal goals. In 31 book traveler's journal, it records Chosen's mainly produced ingredients, such as grains, spices, fruits, cabbage, chicken, and chestnuts; foods from Chosen include kimchi, soup, and tofu. Foreigners especially liked foods made of eggs and chicken, but they did not enjoy Chosun's lack of sugar and dairy. Thirty-one book foreigners' records describe Chosun's Ondol, kitchen, crock, fermented foods, low dining tables, and chopsticks. Chosun people liked dog meat, unrestrained drinking culture, sungnyung, and tea culture. Foreign documentation on Chosun's food culture allows modern scholars to learn about Chosun people's lifestyles, as if their lives were a vivid picture.

A Study on Efficient Work Force Supply-Demand According to the Employment Permit System for Foreigners (외국인 고용허가제 도입에 따른 효율적 노동인력 수급에 관한 연구)

  • The employment permit system for foreigners, which stresses introduction of foreign work force in a legal manner rather than in the position of being trainees, is anticipated to efficiently improve introduction and the overall management system of foreign work force and related difficulties such as illegal alien problems, absurdity on sending laborers overseas. In this paper, a prospective model of supply and demand of work force has been developed basing on various categories of industries and patterns about nationally practical foreign employees to look over efficient supply and demand of work force suiting employment of foreigner among foreign work force policies. To propose the prospective model, we have derived industry- and pattern-related matrixes of foreign laborers basing on Inter-Industry Analysis Method put forth by Professor Leontiyef in 1930, and through the derived matrix assessed repercussions concerning overall domestic industries and foreigner types and decided yearly weight; the capacity of supply and demand of foreign laborers can be compared through proposed statistical estimation and government estimation by combining the determined weight with yearly incomes of foreign laborers. This paper has thoroughly considered the particularity of our employment permit system for foreigners and applied the Weibull distribution and incorporated the dependence of foreign laborers during the limited period of 3 years to the industry relation analysis, ultimately proposing an efficient supply and demand method about domestic foreign work force.
