  • Optical tweezers are a tool that can use a tightly focused laser beam to trap and manipulate micron-sized dielectric particles that are immersed in a medium with lower refractive index. In this paper, the calculation of the trapping force of optical tweezers is presented. A nonparaxial Gaussian beam is used to represent a tightly focused Gaussian beam, and the FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used for computing the electromagnetic field distributions in the dielectric medium. Scattered-field formulation is used for analytical expression of the incident fields. Using the electromagnetic field distribution from FDTD simulation, the trapping force is calculated based on Maxwell's stress tensor.

  • A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using MR fluid (MR valve) is suggested and fabricated for fluid control systems. The MR fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. The MR cylinder is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet. The differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. It has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. The size of MR cylinder and piston has ${\varphi}30mm{\times}300mm\;and\;{\varphi}28.5mm{\times}120mm$ in face size, respectively and 0.8mm in gap length. Through experiments, it was found that the differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity under little influence of the flow rate, which corresponds to a pressure control valve. The differential pressure of 0.47MPa and contact force of 320N were obtained with the input current of 1.5A. The rising time of force was 1.1s in step response of a manipulator using the MR cylinder. The effectiveness of the MR cylinder was also demonstrated through the force control.

  • There are two distinct approaches to improving the quality of protein NMR structures during refinement: all-atom force fields and accumulated knowledge-assisted methods that include Rosetta. Mao et al. reported that, for 40 proteins, Rosetta increased the accuracies of their NMR-determined structures with respect to the X-ray crystal structures (Mao et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 136, 1893 (2014)). In this study, we calculated 32 structures of those studied by Mao et al. using all-atom force field and implicit solvent model, and we compared the results with those obtained from Rosetta. For a single protein, using only the experimental NOE-derived distances and backbone torsion angle restraints, 20 of the lowest energy structures were extracted as an ensemble from 100 generated structures. Restrained simulated annealing by molecular dynamics simulation searched conformational spaces with a total time step of 1-ns. The use of GPU-accelerated AMBER code allowed the calculations to be completed in hours using a single GPU computer-even for proteins larger than 20 kDa. Remarkably, statistical analyses indicated that the structures determined in this way showed overall higher accuracies to their X-ray structures compared to those refined by Rosetta (p-value < 0.01). Our data demonstrate the capability of sophisticated atomistic force fields in refining NMR structures, particularly when they are coupled with the latest GPU-based calculations. The straightforwardness of the protocol allows its use to be extended to all NMR structures.

  • Commercial eddy current dynamometers control the torque of rotating body, power supply machine, with the field coil current being operated as a braking force. In this paper, we studied the relation between field coil current and torque load of eddy current dynamometer. By the torque measuring analysis of eddy current dynamometer it is linear relation between the brake force measured from a torque meter which is installed at the case of dynamometer and the multiplied shaft rpm by the squares of field coil current (N$\times$I$^2$). To prove the relation, it was experimented and showed that the torque operated by the rotating body can be measured with the shaft rpm and the field coil current of the eddy current dynamometer. This result shows a possibility that eddy current dynamometer can measure the torque of rotating body without a torque measuring device. such as load cell.

  • The outer-most electrons of metal atoms and the remining valence electrons of any molecular atoms make three dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bondings. The electrons on the $\pi$-bonding orbital rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise and they then make electro-magnetic waves between atoms on the orbital because electron move between plus charged ions. The three dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bonding orbitals are quantum-mechanically modeled by a cyclic Kronig-Penny Model and energy band structures are analyzed with their potential barrier thickness. The waves generated between plus charged ions are the particular $\pi$-far infrared rays, which have dual properties between material and electro-magnetic waves and can be measured not by modern electro-magnetic tester but biosensor such as finger's force tester. Because the $\pi$-rays can be modulated with electro-magnetic waves it can be applied for harmful electro-magnetic wave killers. Because the $\pi$-rays make new three dimensional crystallizing $\pi$-bonding orbitals in the material the food and drink can be transformed into a helpful physical constitutional property for human health. Distinction between crystalline and amorphous metals is possible because very strong crystalline $\pi$-bonding orbitals can not easily be transformed into another. The $\pi$-rays can also be applied for biofunctional diagnostics and therapy. Gravitational field is one of the electro-magnetic fields. And also magnetic field and gravitational force field make charge's movement. ($\times$ = q, : magnetic field, : force field, q: plus charge, : velocity field)

  • The Lorentz force distribution of a high $T_c$ superconducting tape with increasing transport currents in magnetic field ($H_a$) was visualized. The external magnetic field was applied normally to the coated conductor tape surface after zero-field cooling, and the transport current ($I_a$) was increased stepwise from 0 to 90 % of the values of the critical current ($I_c$ ($H_a$)) at applied filed, Ha. The field distribution (H(x)) near the sample surface across the tape width (2w) was measured using the scanning Hall probe method. Applying an inversion to the measured field distribution, we obtained the underlying current distribution (J(x)), from which the magnetic induction, B(x) was calculated with Biot-Savart law. Then Lorentz force per unit length was calculated using F(x)=J(x)${\times}$B(x), which appears to be very inhomogeneous along the tape width due to the complicated distributions of J(x) and B(x).

  • In this paper, the dynamic motion driven by electromagnetic force of transformer windings is modeled and its characteristics are numerically analyzed. The electromagnetic field is obtained using the 2D finite element method taking account of anisotropic property of iron core, and the electromagnetic force on the transformer winding is calculated from Lorenz's force formula using the field distribution result. The system motion equation driven by electromagnetic force and gravitational force is numerically analyzed using the 4-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. Above analyses procedure is applied to a single-phase core-type transformer to validate its algorithm.

  • This paper presents hydraulic model which can capture the hysteric damping force behavior of ER damper. A flow mode rue ER damper is manufactured, and its field-dependent damping forces are measured. Newly proposed hydraulic model which derived from physical hydro-mechanical parameters of ER damper are conventional Bingham model are investigated to represent the field-dependent damping force characteristics of ER damper. After principal parameters of two models are estimated from the measured damping forces data, the force vs velocity hysteresis cycles are then reconstructed. The results show that the proposed hydraulic model can capture the hysteresis behavior of ER damper accurately.

  • This paper presents field-dependent dynamic characteristics of a shock damper featuring an electro-rheological(ER) damper. A cylindrical type of the shock damper is designed and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model. The damping force is then measured with respect to the piston velocity at various electric fields. The measured damping force is incorporated with the 1DOF shock system to analyze the shock isolation performance.

  • Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).
