  • Diagonal reinforced coupling beam of coupled shear walls can provide sufficient strength and stiffness to resist lateral force. However, the reinforcement details for coupling beams required by ACI 318 (2011) are difficult to construct because of the reinforcement congestion and confined interior area. This study presents experimental results about the seismic performance of coupling beams having bundled diagonal reinforcement to improve the workability. Experiments were conducted using half scaled precast coupling beams having an aspect ratio of 2.0. It was observed that the bundled diagonal reinforced coupling beams can develop seismic performance similar to the coupling beams with requirement details specified in ACI 318 (2011).

  • In rotating machinery, unbalance and misalignment are major concerns in vibration. Unbalance can be eliminated by balancing procedure to some degree. but little work has been done on the vibrations that occur in a misaligned rotor system. Currently, no generalized theoretical model based on a rotor system with flexible coupling is available to describe the vibrations caused by misalignment. As a part of systematic investigation on the misalignment, first of all, the study on flexible coupling with misalignment should be preceded. In this study, the geometry and reaction force and moment of a gear coupling with misalignment was investigated, also the theoretical model of a gear coupling with misalignment was presented by using the relationship between geometry and moment of gear coupling. It is expected that the proposed procedure can be applied to derive the theoretical model of other couplings.

  • Linear motors are easily affected by load disturbances, force ripples, friction, and parameter variations because there are no mechanical transmissions that can reduce the effects of model uncertainties and external disturbance. In this study, a nonlinear adaptive controller to achieve high-speed/high-accuracy position control of a two-axis linear motor is designed. The operation of this controller is based on a cross-coupling algorithm. Nonlinear effects such as friction and force ripples are estimated and compensated for. An enhanced cross-coupling algorithm is proposed for effectively improving the biaxial contour accuracy while achieving closed-loop stability. The proposed controller is evaluated by performing computer simulations.

  • In this study, the cross-coupling control (CCC) with three new features is proposed to maintain contour precision in high-speed nonlinear contour machining. One is an improved contour error model that provides almost exact calculation of the errors. Another is the utilization of variable controller gains based on the instantaneous curvature of the contour and the variable command. For this scheme, a stability is analyzed. As a result, the stability region is obtained, and the variable gains are decided within that region. The other scheme in the proposed CCC is a real-time feedrate adaptation module to regulate cutting force fur better surface finish through regulation of material removal rate (MRR). The simulation results show that the proposed CCC system can provide better precision than the existing method particularly in high-speed machining of nonlinear contours.

  • This paper presents the development of a deadweight type 6-component force/moment generator for estimating characteristics of multi-component loadcell. Several new methods in moment generation are introduced in order to produce accurate force / moment and to minimize coupling effect between each force or moment components. In order to verify the reliability of the calibration system developed, estimation of the method for generating moment components and cross measurements between force or moment components are carried out utilizing a commercial torque cell and both-ends fixed beam designed in this paper.

  • Two kinds of PZT cantilevers integrated with a piezoresistor have been newly designed, fabricated, and characterized for high speed AFM. In first cantilever, a piezoresistor is used to sense atomic force acting on tip, while in second cantilever, a piezoresistor is integrated to calibrate hysteresis and creep phenomena of the PZT cantilever. The fabricated PZT cantilevers provide high tip displacement of $0.55\mu\textrm{m}/V$ and high resonant frequency of 73 KHz. A new cantilever structure has been designed to prevent electrical coupling between sensor and PZT actuator and the proposed cantilever shows 5 times lower coupling voltage than that of the previous cantilever. The fabricated PZT cantilever shows a crisp scanned image at 1mm/sec, while the conventional piezo-tube scanner shows blurred image even at $180\mu\textrm{m}/sec$. The non-linear properties of the PZT actuator are also well calibrated using the piezoresistive sensor for calibration.

  • Among the destruction instances of half-through arch bridges, the shorter hangers are more likely to be ruined. For a thorough investigation of the hanger system durability, we have studied vehicle impact effect on hangers with vehicle-bridge coupling method for a half-through concrete-filled-steel-tube arch bridge. A numerical method has been applied to simulate the variation of dynamic internal force (stress) in hangers under different vehicle speeds and road surface roughness. The characteristics and differences in impact effect among hangers with different length (position) are compared. The impact effect is further analyzed comprehensively based on the vehicle speed distribution model. Our results show that the dynamic internal force induced by moving vehicles inside the shorter hangers is significantly greater than that inside the longer ones. The largest difference of dynamic internal force among the hangers could be as high as 28%. Our results well explained a common phenomenon in several hanger damage accidents occurred in China. This work forms a basis for hanger system's fatigue analysis and service life evaluation. It also provides a reference to the design, management, maintenance, monitoring, and evaluation for this kind of bridge.

  • The seismic performance of a coupled shear wall system is governed by the shear resistances of its coupling beams. The plate-reinforced composite (PRC) coupling beam is a newly developed form of coupling beam that exhibits high deformation and energy dissipation capacities. In this study, the shear capacity of plate-reinforced composite coupling beams was investigated. The shear strengths of PRC coupling beams with low span-to-depth ratios were calculated using a softened strut-and-tie model. In addition, a shear mechanical model and calculating method were established in combination with a multi-strip model. Furthermore, a simplified formula was proposed to calculate the shear strengths of PRC coupling beams with low span-to-depth ratios. An analytical model was proposed based on the force mechanism of the composite coupling beam and was proven to exhibit adequate accuracy when compared with the available test results. The comparative results indicated that the new shear model exhibited more reasonable assessment accuracy and higher reliability. This method included a definite mechanical model and reasonably reflected the failure mechanisms of PRC coupling beams with low span-to-depth ratios not exceeding 2.5.

  • On the dynamic behavior of a simple beam subjected to an uniformly distributed tangential follower force, the influences of the velocities and magnitudes of a moving mass have been studied by numerical method. The instant amplitude of a simple beam is calculated and analyzed for each position of the moving mass represented by the time functions. The uniformly distributed tangential follower force is considered in its critical value of a simple beam, and four values of velocity is also chosen. Their coupling effects on the deflections of a simple beam are inspected too. When a moving mass moves after middle zone of a simple beam at the low velocities, its deflection is increased by the coupling of an uniformly distributed tangential follower force and moving mass.

  • Magnetic couplings are do not require any mechanical contact with the power transmitted to the secondary side according to the primary side. For this reason, well-suited for isolated systems such as vacuums or high pressure. So, this paper presents the force characteristic analysis of the permanent magnet (PM) linear coupling with vertical magnetized using an analytical magnetic field calculations. Based on the definition of governing equations and magnetic vector potential, we obtained the analytical solutions according to the boundary condition for each of the regions. Also, we derived from the force generated in the permanent magnet surface using the Maxwell stress tensor. The analytical results are proved the validity by comparing to the finite element method (FEM).
