  • This study was carried out to improve utilization of fly ash. Each animal waste was mixed with fly ash and composted This compost used at forage crops with corn, rye and alfalfa to examine to examine the fertilized efficiency and investigated productivity of forage crops, composition of this copmost and effect of fly ash on soil characteristics and composition. Content of organic matte, P2O5, K2O, CaO, MgO, Mn and B at the soil, which is given fly ash, increased. After the test crops were harvested, pH of the soil was maintained about 7 and contents of organic matter, phosphoric aicd, K, Mg, and B was increased at the soil of used fly ash. As fly ash was mixed, each DM yield of corn and rye was increased 10∼13% and 14∼21% especially alfalfa was increased 35% at the soil which is mixed fly ash with cage layer manure. As fly ash was mixed, each Crude protein (CP) of corn and rye was increased 6∼17% and about 29%, especially, as fly and cage layer manure was mixed CP of alfalfa was increased 33%. In conclusion, as fly ash is mixed with anlmal waste and use at forage crops, It makes the soil good and improve the productivity of forage crops.

  • This study was carried out to offer basic information for the promotion of the goat industry and the improvement of mountainous-pasture management by investigating seasonal changes in forage and livestock productivity according to the grazing-pasture type. The forage productivity of rangeland was the highest (p < 0.05) in summer and decreased in autumn; but that of pasture was the largest (p < 0.05) in spring and had relatively stable productivity with minor seasonal differences, although it decreased slightly in autumn. The dry matter content was not seasonally different at pasture, but it was changeable from spring to autumn at rangeland. The crude protein content increased in autumn at pasture (p < 0.05), and decreased in summer and autumn compared with spring at rangeland. The crude fiber content was lower and the ether extract was higher at pasture compared with rangeland. The average daily gain of the goats was different depending on forage productivity and pasture type; consequently, the lowered forage productivity at rangeland compared with pasture means that rangeland needs to be changed or improved to a pasture type that provides a more effective grazing system for goats.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effects of sowing methods after herbicide application on botanical composition, forage yield and chemical contents in the pasture dominated Hypochoeris radicata in Jeju area over two years. It was arranged as a randomized block design with five treatrnents(contro1: none, TI : herbicide application, T2 : herbicide application + oversowing, T3 : herbicide application + overdrilling, T4 : herbicide application + cultivation). In the pasture dominated Hypochoeris radicata, the herbicide (dicamba) treatments improved grass rate with orchardgrass and perennial ryegrass by 97%. The DM yield per ha were much higher(p<0.05) in T2(7,152kg), T3(7,608kg) and T4(8,010kg) than that of control. The chemical compositions of grass (% of DM basis) were not different among treatments, but the overdrilling and cultivation treatments tended to increase the forage crude protein(CP). These results indicate that oversowing or overdrilling after herbicide application can efficiently improve botanical compositions and forage productivity in the pasture dominated Hypochoeris radicata. • This experiment was carried out to select a resistant corn variety for rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) disease in a RBSDV prevalent area (Gochang of Jeollabukdo) from 2006 to 2008. Ten corn varieties for silage preparation were cultivated with first cropping and second cropping system in an RBSDV field, and were tested outbreak rates of RBSDV and dry matter (DM) yield of forage. The outbreak rates of RBSDV were significantly different between corn varieties. Therefore, the resistance degree of corn varieties for RBSDV were divided into 4 groups; very resistant ('Kwangpeyongok' and 'Kwanganok'), resistant ('P3156' and 'P3394'), mildly resistant ('Cheonganok' and 'P32P75') and susceptible ('Suwon19', 'DK697' and 'GW6959') groups respectively. DM yield of forage in RBSDV fields exhibited comparatively significant differences between varieties (p<0.05). DM yield of resistant varieties ('Kwangpeyongok', 'Kwanganok', 'P3156' and 'P3394'), were higher (14~26%) than those of susceptible varieties ('Suwon 19', 'DK697' and 'GW6959'). Therefore, resistant varieties were recommended for increasing forage productivity in field of RBSDV prevalent areas.

  • This pot experiments was conducted to find out the forage productivity and quality in a grass/clover sward as affected by the application of three different fertilizers; double superphosphate(DS), fused Mg-phosphate(FP), and complex fertilizer(CF) on newly reclaimed hilly soil. This 2nd part was concerned with the contents and yields of mineral nutrients and general components. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The concentrations of P, Ca. Mg, and Na by the forage species were relatively higher in the CF plots than in the FP and DS plots. The yields of mineral nutrients by the forage species were high in the order: CF>FP>DS plots. Especially. these were higher in the ladino clover and mixed forages than in orchardgrass. 2 The contents of crude protein and crude ash were highest with the CF plots, compared with the FP and DS plots. The yields of general components in the ladino clover and mixed forages were apparently highest with the CF plots. whereas these in orchardgrass not showed consistent differences among the plots. It was recognized that the positive effects on the concentrations and yields of mineral nutrients and general components in forages were higher in the order: CF>FP>DS plots.

  • This study was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics and productivity according to the species and varieties of winter forage crops in reclaimed land. Winter forage crops used in this study were developed in National Institute of Crop Science, RDA. Oats ('Samhan', 'Jopung', 'Taehan', 'Dakyung' and 'Hi-early'), forage barley ('Yeongyang', 'Yuyeon', 'Yujin', 'Dacheng' and 'Yeonho'), rye ('Gogu', 'Jogreen' and 'Daegokgreen') and triticale ('Shinyoung', 'Saeyoung', 'Choyoung', 'Sinseong', 'Minpung' and 'Gwangyoung') were planted in the reclaimed land of Sihwa district in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do in the autumn of 2018 and cultivated using each standard cultivation method, and harvested in May 2019(oat and rye: 8 May, barley and triticale: 20 May.) The emergency rate was the lowest in rye (84.4%), and forage barley, oat and triticale were in similar levels (92.8 to 98.8%). Triticale was the lowest (416 tiller/㎡) and oat was the highest (603 tiller/㎡) in tiller number. Rye was the earliest in the heading date (April 21), triticale was April 26, and oat and forage barley were in early May (May 2 and May 5). The plant height was the highest in rye (95.6 cm), and triticale and forage barley was similar (76.3 and 68.3cm) and oat was the lowest (54.2 cm). Dry matter(DM) content of rye was the highest in the average of 46.04% and the others were similar at 35.09~37.54%. Productivity was different among species and varieties, with the highest dry matter yield of forage barley (4,344 kg/ha), oat was similar to barley, and rye and triticale were lowest. 'Dakyoung' and 'Hi-early' were higher in DM yield (4,283 and 5,490 kg/ha), and forage barley were higher in 'Yeonho', 'Yujin' and 'Dacheng' varieties (4,888, 5,433 and 5,582 kg/ha). Crude protein content of oat (6.58%) tended to be the highest, and TDN(total digectible nutrient) content (63.61%) was higher than other varieties. In the RFV(relative feed value), oats averaged 119, while the other three species averaged 92~105. The weight of 1,000 grain was the highest in triticale (43.03 g) and the lowest in rye (31.61 g). In the evaluation of germination rate according to the salt concentration (salinity), the germination rate was maintained at about 80% from 0.2 to 0.4% salinity. The correlation coefficient between germination and salt concentration was high in oat and barley (-0.91 and -0.92) and lowest in rye (-0.66). In conclusion, forage barley and oats showed good productivity in reclaimed land. Adaptability is also different among varieties of forage crops. When growing forage crops in reclaimed land, the selection of highly adaptable species and varieties was recommended.

  • This study was to assess the effect of sowing mixed legume forage and applying cattle manure on the productivity and feed value of whole-crop barley (WCB) as a representative of winter crops and to estimate feeding capacity of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) per unit area by defining optimal application level of cattle manure for more fertile soil and manure recycling for the purpose of reduced environmental pollution and efficient production of organic forage contributable to production of organic animal products. Sowing mixed legume forage significantly (p<0.05) increased yields of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) for WCB compared to WCB alone sowing, but there was no difference between mixed sowing treatments. The yields of DM, CP and TDN were significantly (p<0.05) highest in 100~150 kg N/hg. The CP and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were highest in mixed sowing with hairy vetch, followed by sowing mixed forage pea and WCB alone (p<0.05). There were no differences in CP and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents among cattle manure application levels. As nitrogen application level increased, ADF content increased (p<0.05), but TDN content decreased (p<0.05). Feeding capacity of organic Hanwoo (head/ha) weighing 450 kg of body weight with 400 g of daily gain significantly (p<0.05) increased due to mixed sowing with legume forage, and with increasing application levels of fermented cattle manure, feeding capacity significantly (p<0.05) increased. The results indicate that mixed-sowing of WCB and legume forage not only cut nitrogen application level of fermented cattle manure by over 50 kg per ha but also increased their feed value and productivity, and feeding capacity. This would be contributable to diversity of forage resources as well as production of organic animal product by creating low cost and high quality of forage.

  • Multiple cropping system is an important agricultural system in Korea, which is significant to increase forage yield and promote agricultural economic development. This experiment was carried out to develop triple cropping systems (winter cereals crop for forage - silage corn - summer oats) for maximum year-around forage production at paddy field in southern region. We also to select a winter forage crop to determine corn planting time, and to examine the forage productivity and feed value of summer cultivated oat, which was planted after corn cultivation. When winter cereal crops for forages are harvested in accordance with and corn planter, the fresh yield and dry matter yield of rye were 32.0 ton/ha and 5.8 ton/ha, respectively, showing higher yielding compared to other winter crops. Corn silage as summer crop was showed the fresh yield and dry matter yield of 72.1 ton/ha and 20.2 ton/ha, respectively. In the feed value, crude protein and TDN contents were 7.4% and 69.3%, respectively. They was showed higher productivity and feed value. The heading date of High-speed oat was October 10, and its fresh yield and dry matter yield were 37.6 ton/ha and 8.0 ton/ha, respectively. As a feed value, crude protein and TDN content was 11.4% and 59.1%, respectively. Therefore, triple cropping systems for the production of forage all throughout the year are possible with the introduction of summer oats in the southern region, and rye could be the most suitable winter forage crops for triple cropping systems.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the change of productivity and feed value in different types of hilly pasture. The pasture utilized in the experiment was placed on the experimental farm of Pyeongchang Campus of Seoul National University. Forage production type(FP; Orchardgrass 18 + Tall Fescue 12 + Timothy 5 + White clover 5 kg/ha) and Public farm type(PF: Orchardgrass 12 + Tall Fescue 18 + Timothy 5 + White clover 5 kg/ha) pasture were established in September 3, 2014 and utilized (cutting or grazing) four times every year. Growth characteristics, yield and forage quality were investigated for two years. Plant height of grasses was the highest in the $1^{st}$ cutting and legumes was in the $2^{nd}$ cutting. Dry matter (DM) content was highest at every the $1^{st}$ cut grasses significantly lower at the $2^{nd}$ harvest (p<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the $2^{nd}$, $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ harvest in 2016. In the botanical composition change, the portion of legume was gradually increased after pasture establishment and the ratio of weed and bare land was higher at $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ cutting, but it was decreased at $4^{th}$ harvest. There was no significant difference in 2016 of fresh yield between two farm types (p>0.05). The yield of dry matter showed similar trend of fresh yield and forage production type was higher than that of public farm type (p<0.05). The forage intake by livestock was 1,452 kg/ha in 2015 and 1,743 kg/ha in 2016. Pasture utilization ratio of public farm type pasture was highest in the $3^{rd}$ grazing time. Forage quality of pasture in relation to management type had not significant difference, but there was difference in harvest times. Crude protein (CP) was the lowest in the $1^{st}$ harvest and total digestible nutrient (TDN) was highest in the $1^{st}$ harvest and lowest in the $4^{th}$ harvest. Based on the above results, it is found that the establishment of pasture suitable for farm's situation is important for set up of Korean model of hilly pasture. Although the forage production type is superior on forage productivity, it is recommended that the results will be provided as basic data for management of public farm type in the future.

  • On April 4 to 6, 2005, there was a huge fire in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea, which burned over 250ha of forests and 246 buildings including 160 houses. The effects of reseeding rate and timing on productivity and nutritive value of forages in the forest fire burnt pasture in this study were investigated. The effect of reseeding could not be seen in the burnt pastures in terms of forage productivity and quality in short term but there was a long-term effect particularly with higher reseeding rates at later days after the fire on forage botanical composition. We concluded that forest fire brought reduction in pasture forage yield for a short period but it did not make a significant effect for a long term.
