  • We designed wideband HTS antennas which consists of two triangle-radiation patches using a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$\sub$7-x/ (YBCO) superconducting thin film. The major limitation of high-Tc superconducting (HTS) microstrip antennas is the narrow bandwidth due to the high Q and thin substrate. Defining bandwidth as the frequency range over which standing wave ratio (SWR) 2:1 or less, HTS antenna bandwidths are typically 0.85% to 1.1%. Thus considerable effort has been focused on developing antennas for broadband operation. To calculate input impedance and design of the broadband HTS antennas a moment method technique was used. The HTS antenna fabricated in this work was designed for K-band, which is useful band for satellite-to-satellite communications. The bandwidth obtained was a significant 6.7% and the other measured performance of our HTS antenna, including the bandwidth, radiation Pattern, efficiency, standing wave ratio (SWR) and return losses was reported.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a new technology that will be increasingly applied at the industrial field as a potential approach to improve cost and convenience of structural inspection. Recently, the development of smart sensor is very active for real application. This study has focused on preparation and application study of SAL sensor. In order to detect elastic wave, smart piezoelectric sensor, SAL, is fabricated by using a piezoelectric element, shielding layer and protection layer. This protection layer plays an important role in a patched network of distributed piezoelectric sensor and shielding treatment. Four types of SAL sensor are designed/prepared/tested, and these details will be discussed in the paper. In this study, SAL sensor can be feasibly applied to perform structural health monitoring and to detect damage sources which result in elastic waves.

  • The object of this research is limited to the reduction of compression process noise only among the main sources of compressor noise such as motor noise, compression process noise, and valve port flow noise. Thus the research is focused on the wave motion rather than the particle motion of sound wave travels. A muffler is a commonly used device to reduce the compression process noise, generated by the pressure pulsations caused by the cyclic compression process. In this research, the acoustic characteristics of the muffler are analyzed by using the normal gradient integral equation proposed by Wu and Wan. Moreover, a commercial code SYSNOISE developed by indirect variational boundary integral equation is also used to validate the results. For the noise reduction, the topology optimization technique using a genetic algorithm is used. The number, size and position of the muffler holes are considered as design variables. Compared with original design, the optimized design has very improved acoustic characteristics. Both numerical and experimental analyses are used to evaluate new design.

  • Nonlinear and forced oscillations of supported viscous droplet were focused in the present study. The droplet has a free contact line with solid plate and inviscid fluid. Natural frequencies of a pendant droplet have been investigated experimentally by imposing the acoustic wave while the frequency is being increased at a fixed amplitude. The evaporation was observed at atmosphere pressure. The droplet was recorded throughout the entire evaporation process and transient variations of the volume was measured. The evaporation process of oscillating droplet with thermofoil has been also observed to investigate analyzing the resonance effect on the thermal characteristics of droplet. It is found that a pendant droplet shows the resonant behaviors at each mode similar to the theoretical analysis. During imposing the acoustic wave, the pendant droplet makes a rotating motion in its longitudinal axis which is a new shape oscillation mode. The evaporation rate of a pendant droplet at resonant frequency is significantly enhanced.

  • A numerical model to solve mild slope equation is developed by use of a preconditioned conjugate gradient method (PCGM). In the present paper. accurate boundary conditions and a better preconditioner are employed which are improved from the existing method of Panchang et al. (1991). Computational procedures are focused on weakly nonlinear waves, and emerged problems to make a more accurate model are discussed. The results of model are tested against laboratory results of both circular and elliptic shoals. Model results of wave amplitude show excellent agreement with laboratory data and thes thus model can be used as a powerful tool to calculate wave transformation in shallow waters with complex bathymetry.

  • In this work, we propose a new ultrasonic damage inspection method in plate structures. The proposed method employs an OPMT (Orientation-adjustable Patch-type Magnetostrictive Transducer) in order to make the ultrasonic waves focused on the specific target point. For experiments, virtual grid points were set up at every 50 mm in an aluminum plate and two OPMTs were used for inspection. If there exists a crack in a plate, the reflected Lamb wave from the crack is measured in addition to the direct waves from the transmitting transducer to the receiving transducer.

  • The seismic failure-prone region in Istanbul has been examined in terms of the segmented pipelines. Although some researchers have suggested that this territory should be left as a green land, many people continue to live in this area. This region is about 9-10 km away from the North Anatolian Fault Line. This fault zone is an active right-lateral strike-slip fault line in Turkey and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0-7.5 is expected in the Marmara Sea. Therefore, superstructures and infrastructures are under both land sliding risks and seismic risks in this area. Because there are not any pipeline-fault line intersection points in the region, in this study, it has been focused on the behaviors of the segmented (sewage or stormwater) pipelines subject to earthquake-induced permanent ground deformation and seismic wave propagation. Based on the elastic beam theory some necessary analyses have been carried out and obtained results of this approximation have been examined.

  • The climate on the Korean Peninsula has been warmed recently, abnormal weather conditions such as heat waves, cold waves, and tropical nights have been detected frequently. Precisely, the number of days with cold waves in the winter has increased, and rapid changes of temperature in the morning and afternoon have occurred frequently in the 2000s. Due to the previous phenomenons, this research is focused on evaluating the concrete's Chloride Penetration Resistance and Durability, and the difference of the resistance according to the W/C.

  • Remotely Operated Vehicle of 6000-meters is a new conceptual equipment made to replace the manned systems for investigating the deep-sea environment, and all of the ROV systems in operational condition strongly depend on the connecting cables. In this point of view dynamics of the ROV cable system is very important for operational and safety aspects as a cable generally encounters great tension. Researches have been executed on this problem, and most of papers have been mainly focused on the operational condition of ROV system in deep sea. This paper presents the dynamic cable response analysis during ROV launching condition rather than the operational one in order to provide the design guide of a ROV cable system in this circumstance, considering the coupling effects between cable and wave-induced ship motion. To obtain the variations of cable tensions during a ROV launching, a pre-stressed harmonic response analysis was carried out. Wave-induced tensions of the cable during ROV launching were obtained in real sea states using FE modeling, and the basic design guide of a ROV cable system was obtained.

  • In the case of Impingement of plane moving shock wave over concave or convex double wedges (pseudo-stationary flow) and cylindrical walls (truly non-stationary flow), it Is expected that there are transitions from regular reflection to Mach reflection or vice versa In shock wave reflections. In these connections, it is necessary to verify the various of reflection process and transition angle for the reflection problems In double wedges, and to verify the transition angle, effects of curvature radius and initial wall angle on it for the reflection problems In cylindrical walls. Especially, we focused our attention to confirm the existence of hysteresis phenomenon induced by the different transition processes, and Neumann paradox, which is a small discrepancy between theoretical and experimental transition angles. Experiments were carried out by using the shock tube of $6{\times}6cm^2$, and high speed photographic technique consisted of delay unit, triggering system, light source of Xe lamp and so on was used for flow visualization.
