  • Recently, a method for robust time reversal focusing has been introduced to extend the period of stable focusing in time-dependent ocean environments [S. Kim et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 114, 145-157, (2003)]. In this study, concept of focal-size broadening based on waveguide invariant theory in an ocean time reversal acoustics is described. It is achieved by imposing the multiple location constraints. The signal vector used in multiple location constraints are found from the theory on waveguide invariant for frequency band corresponding the extended focal range. The broadening of foci in an ocean waveguide can play an important role in the application of time reversal processing, particularly to the underwater acoustic communication with moving vehicles. The proposed method is demonstrated in the context of the underwater acoustic communication from the transmit/receive array (TRA) to a slowly moving vehicle.

  • FZPL antenna have been applied for satellite TV receiver system, radio astronomical observation and so on, because of its flat nature and structural simplicity. Using TLM modeling, numerical simulation was performed for the FZPL antenna which ran be applied for DAB/DMB receiver system. FZPL antenna mounted on dielectric substrate was investigated. As the results, the computed focal length was shorter than the designed one and the received gain was 18dB.

  • Focal parts of utterance can be determined by new/contrastive information, a focus particle, a contrastive topic marker, or a nominative case marker in Busan Korean. Among these factors, new or contrastive information is the most important element in determining the intonational nucleus of an utterance. However, unlike Seoul Korean, when a focus particle, a topic marker, or a case marker contributes to the placement of the most prominent peak of an utterance, the peak is on the noun to which they are attached. Moreover, the case marker-ga shows more prominent pitch on the preceding noun than the noun followed by the topic marker-nun when-ga is used as emphatic or contrastive. This is one of the major problems for Busan Korean users in commanding natural and fluent Seoul Korean intonation even if they use standard written form of Seoul Korean in their speech.

  • A computer aided system has been developed for the focal length measurement/compensation in camera manufacture. Signal data proportional to light intensity is obtained and sampled very rapidly from the line CCD. Based on the measured signal, the MTF performance is calculated, where the MTF is the ratio of magnitude of the output image to the input image. In order to find the optimum MTF performance, an effcient algorithm has been implemented using the least squares technique. The developed system has been applied to a practical camera manufacturing process, and demonstrated high productivity with high precision.

  • Takaysu`s arteritis is an arteritis of unknown etiology involving larger elastic arteries. The end stage pathologic feature is vascular obstructive change and the resulting clinical manifestations are local ischemic symptoms such as syncope, visual disturbance, claudication of extremities, hypertension, and angina. Recently we have experienced one case of Takayasu`s arteritis involving aortic arch, left common carotid artery and left subclavian artery. The patient was 27 year-old female and she was admitted because of headache and neck pain. Aortogram revealed fusiform dilatation of left common carotid artery with focal narrowing on it`s distal portion. The patient underwent surgical resection and replacement of Dacron tube graft between distal and proximal left common carotid artery. 3 months after operation, she was readmitted because of shoulder pain and headache. Aortogram revealed focal narrowing of proximal left common carotid artery and total obstruction of left subclavian artery which caused subclavian steel syndrome. Aorto-left common carotid and aorto-left subclavian bypass graft replacement were done.

  • The role of scintigraphic imaging has moved from the detection of lesions to the tissue-specific characterization of lesions over the past 2 decades. Major advances in nuclear medicine imaging include: 1) positron imaging, 2) improved instrumentation, such as the use of multidetector (dual or triple head) gamma cameras for single photon emission computed tomography, and 3) development of numerous new radiopharmaceuticals for positron or single photon imaging (labeled glucose analogue, amino acids, fatty acids, hormones, drugs, receptor ligands, monoclonal antibodies, etc). These advances have resulted in a significantly improved efficacy of radionuclide techniques for the evaluation of various tumors, including those within the liver. The current role of nuclear medicine in the evaluation of focal hepatic tumors is reviewed in this article with an emphasis on the clinical applications of various tracer studies and imaging findings.

  • We fabricated the Fresnel zone plate using femtosecond laser lithography-assisted micro-machining, which is a combined process of nonlinear lithography and wet etching. We investigated the focusing properties by launching a 632.8nm wavelength He-Ne laser beam into the zone plate. The spot size of the primary focal point was $27{\mu}m$ and the intensity of focal point was 0.565W/$cm^2$.

  • In ultrasonic testing of dissimilar metal welds, application of phased array technique in terms of incident beam focusing is not easy because of complicated material structures formed during the multi-pass welding process. Time reversal(TR) techniques can overcome some limitations of phased array since they are self-focusing that does not depend on the geometrical and physical properties of testing components. In this paper, we test the possibility of TR focusing on a defect within anisotropic, heterogeneous austenitic welds. A commercial simulation software is employed for TR focusing and imaging of a side-drilled hole. The performance of time reversed adaptive focal law is compared with those of calculated focal laws for both anisotropic and isotropic welds.

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) includes high voltage generator, electron gun, column, secondary electron detector, scan coil system and image grabber. Column includes electron lenses (condenser lens and objective lens). Condenser lens generates fringe field, makes focal length and control spot size. Focal length represents property of lens. Objective lens control focus. Most of the electrons emitted from the filament, are captured by the anode. The portion of the electron current that leaves the gun through the hole in the anode is called the beam current. Electron beam probe is called the focused beam on the specimen. Because of the lens and aperture, the probe current becomes smaller than the beam current. It generate various signals(backscattered electron, secondary electron) in an interaction with the specimen atoms. In this paper, we describe the result of research to develop the core elements for low-resolution SEM.
