  • In the present paper, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) uncertainty analysis proposed by ITTC was investigated and applied to ship resistance performance using open source libraries, called OpenFOAM. Uncertainties for grid size, time step and iteration number were studied. Wave patterns and hull wave profile were compared for various uncertainty parameters. From results, grid size uncertainty was mainly contributed to simulation numerical uncertainty.

  • Numerical simulations of 1D Burgers equation and 2D sloshing problem were carried out to study numerical discrepancy between serial and parallel computations. The numerical domain was decomposed into 2 and 4 subdomains for parallel computations with message passing interface. The numerical solution of Burgers equation disclosed that fully explicit boundary conditions used on subdomains of parallel computation was responsible for the numerical discrepancy of transient solution between serial and parallel computations. Two dimensional sloshing problems in a rectangular domain were solved using OpenFOAM. After a lapse of initial transient time sloshing patterns of water were significantly different in serial and parallel computations although the same numerical conditions were given. Based on the histograms of pressure measured at two points near the wall the statistical characteristics of numerical solution was not affected by the number of subdomains as much as the transient solution was dependent on the number of subdomains.

  • A microstrip array antenna is designed and tested for satellite broadcasting receptions. The Sierpinski equilateral triangular patch and SSFIP(slot-strip-foam-inverted patch) structures are used. This 1$\times$3 Sierpinski equilateral triangular patch antenna is extended to 8$\times$2 array antenna for satellite broadcasting receptions. The measurement results of the reflection coefficients and the radiation patterns of the manufactured array antenna show good agreements with the simulation results.

  • In the present work, thermal buckling and post-buckling behaviors of imperfect graphene platelet reinforced metal foams (GPRMFs) doubly curved shells are examined. Material properties of GPRMFs doubly curved shells are presumed to be the function of the thickness. Reddy' shell theory incorporating geometric nonlinearity is utilized to derive the governing equations. Various types of the graphene platelets (GPLs) distribution patterns and doubly curved shell types are taken into account. The nonlinear equations are discretized for the case of simply supported boundary conditions. The thermal post-buckling response are presented to analyze the effects of GPLs distribution patterns, initial geometric imperfection, GPLs weight fraction, porosity coefficient, porosity distribution forms, doubly curved shell types. The results show that these factors have significant effects on the thermal post-buckling problems.

  • This study discussesresearch and development of large-sized 3D printers that can be applied to construction and civil engineering for various designs of protective casing on foam liner for concrete exteriors. The consistent use of concrete represents the current surroundings. However, concrete exteriors in Korea have not considered the regional characteristics, but the concrete has been poured solely for economical aspects for the last decade or two. There are many cases of poor installation and not enough design development projects to correct it. This study was conducted to apply various patterns, regional characteristics, and 3D printing for protective casing design for foam liner to create various designs for the concrete walls. Therefore, we started researching on a large 3D printer, and designed and developed this system. Considering the chronological process, the properties of concrete structures were identified, the application of designs for concrete in Korea and abroad and the 3D printing materials for the protective casing were surveyed and analyzed, and a stereotype was produced in the first year to study designs for the beauty of concrete surfaces. In the second year, images of regional characteristics were gathered, design ideas for regional promotion were derived, virtual images were produced along with design modeling to simulate the appearances, and verify the effect of application and promotion. Finally, in the third year, the 3D printer for concrete foam liner was constantly improved to analyze the 3D printing program and the various library elements to complete an actual large-sized 3D printer.

  • Ocean waves passing through the underwater bar at a shallow depth experience a shoaling effect caused by decreasing water depth, a nonlinear interaction therein owing to steepening wave slope, and a wave dispersion effect as the water depth increases again. Because this problem includes many complicated phenomena, it is used as a good example of validating a theoretical development or a CFD method for ocean wave applications. Validation is performed mainly for regular waves by comparing the wave elevation patterns in the time domain with the experimental results. In this study, the spectral evolution of wave spectrum is investigated in the frequency domain when a CFD method such as OpenFOAM is applied for this problem. In particular, the effects of initial phase conditions as well as the nonlinear interaction among harmonic waves are studied.

  • Accurate simulation of free-surface wave flows around a ship is very important for better hull-form design. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code which is based on the open source libraries, OpenFOAM, was developed to predict the wave patterns around a ship. Additional anti-diffusion source term for minimizing a numerical diffusion, which was caused by convection differencing scheme, was considered in the volume-fraction transport equation. The influence of the anti-diffusion source term was tested by applying it to free-surface wave flow around the Wigley and KCS model ships. In results, the wave patterns and hull wave profiles of the Wigley and KCS model ships for various anti-diffusion coefficients showed quite close patterns. While, the band width of the water volume-fraction values between 0.1 to 0.9 at the Wigley and KCS model hull surfaces was narrowed by considering the anti-diffusion term. From the results, anti-diffusion source term decreased free-surface smearing.

  • Where hydraulic structures are to be installed over the entire width of a river or stream, usually a bed protection structure is to be installed. However, a local scour occurs in which the river bed downstream of the river protection system is eroded due to the influence of the upstream flow characteristics. This local scour is dominant in the flow and turbulence characteristics at the boundary of the flow direction and in the material of the bed materials, and may gradually become dangerous over time. Therefore, in this study, we compared the turbulence patterns in the local scour hole at the downstream of the river bed protection with the results of the analysis of the mobile bed experiment, and compared with the application of OpenFoam, a three dimensional numerical analysis model. The distribution of depth-averaged relative turbulence intensities along the flow direction was analyzed. In addition to this result, the stabilization of scour hole was compared with the bed shear stress and Shields parameter, and the results were compared by changing the initial turbulent flow conditions. From the results, it was confirmed that the maximum depth of generation of the three-stage was dominantly developed by the magnitude of depth-averaged relative turbulence intensity rather than the mean flow velocity. This result also suggests that design, construction or gate control are needed to control the depth-averaged relative turbulence intensities in order to reduce or prevent the local scour faults that may occur in the downstream part of the bed protection.

  • Under extreme test or operation condition, refrigerator endures complicated stresses state and thermal bowing deformation arises on the sidewall. Shelf rails designed in the inner case provide increased surface area to permit expansion without bowing, and also increase structural rigidity to resist bowing. In this study, we designed six different shelf patterns of refrigerator model and studied the bead on refrigerator deformation using finite element method (FEM). Analysis result shows that increasing the numbers of beads properly in refrigerator is more helpful to reduce thermal bowing deformation. In addition, the beads would decrease stress on refrigerator sidewall. However, vertical beads have no effect to reduce thermal deformation of the bowing.
