  • The aerodynamic interaction between a wing and a rail is investigated using a boundary-element method. The source and doublet singularities are distributed on the wing and its guide-way rail surface. The unknown strengths of the singularities are determined by inverting the aerodynamic influence coefficient matrices. Present method is validated by comparing computed results with the other numerical data. Rail width and rail height affect the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing only if the rail is narrower than the wing span. Although the present results are limited to the inviscid, irrotational flows, it is believed that the present method can be applied to the conceptual design of the high speed ground transporters moving over the rail.

  • With the financial sponsorship of FKI and six other companies, the design and construction of the human powered aircraft Sky Runner has been begun to design in December of 2008. And it flew in late December of 2009. The original design configuration was continuously modified in response to test results as a 30.36m span, $35.25m^2$ wing area, 26.0 aspect ratio and 39.8kg of empty weight. Although, we have made only 150m flight flying a few seconds so far however, it will contribute to the research of ultra-light and long duration flying planes. A brief review of some design features, wing layout, prop design, fabrication and flight test results are presented.

  • Adaptive wings are capable of properly modifying their shape depending on the current aerodynamic conditions, in order to improve the overall performance of a flying vehicle. In this paper is presented the concept design of a small-scale compliant wing rib whose outline may be distorted in order to switch from an aerodynamic profile to another. The distortion loads are induced by shape memory alloy actuators placed within the frame of a wing section whose elastic response is predicted by the matrix method with beam formulation. Genetic optimization is used to find a wing rib structure (corresponding to the first airfoil) able to properly deforms itself when loaded by the SMA-induced forces, becoming as close as possible to the desired target shape (second airfoil). An experimental validation of the design procedure is also carried out with reference to a simplified structure layout.

  • Recently, development of electric powered UAV for high altitude and long endurance mission has been conducted worldwide. Long endurance requirement necessitates high lift over drag (L/D) aerodynamic characteristics and lightweight structures, leading to highly flexible wings with high aspect ratio. These highly flexible wings increase the danger of catastrophic aircraft failure due to flutter, which is a dynamic aeroelastic instability occurring from the interaction of aerodynamic, inertial, and elastic forces acting on the aircraft flying through the air. In this paper, flexible wing for electric powered UAV whose skin is fabricated using mylar film for lightweight design is briefly explained. In addition, flutter analysis procedures and results for the flexible wing in order to substantiate the aeroelastic stability requirements are presented.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of Coleoptera species of Epilachna quadricollis and Allomyrina dichotoma are experimentally and numerically investigated. Using digital high speed camera and smoke wire technique, we visualized the continuous wing kinematics and the flight motion of free-flying coleoptera. The experimental visualization shows that the elytra flapped concurrently with the main wing both in the downstroke and upstroke motions. The wing motion of Epilachna quadricollis was captured and analyzed frame by frame to identify the kinematics of the wings and to implement it in the movement of a model wing (thin plate) in the simulation. The two-dimensional simulation of Epilachna quadricollis hovering flight was performed by assuming the wing cross section shape as a thin plate, even though most of insect's wings are made of curved corrugated membrane. The effect of Reynolds number are investigated by the simulation. Meanwhile, in order to investigate the role and effect of elytra, the flow visualization of Allomyrina dichotoma was carried on using smoke wire visualization technique. Here, we confirmed that the vortex generated by elytra due to its movement is strongly influence the vortex dynamic generated by hind wings.

  • A compound drone that combines a fixed wing and a rotary wing is an aircraft that can take off and landing vertically, and can increase flight time and fly faster with fixed wings. The compound drones are divided into many types depending on the method of adding the thrust vectoring or the lift fan and the position of the rotor. In this study, we designed and fabricated a composite drone with four V-TOL motors in a fixed-wing, and assigned missions to the aviation body, hence judged mission accuracy using the actual flight test. The design process and the mission evaluation process employed in this study can be utilized on the development of various unmanned aerial vehicle.

  • Flow and aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed numerically for a commercial passenger airplane, Boeing 747-400, flying in the cruising condition. The model geometry with 100:1 in scale was obtained by the photo scanning measurement with the maximum error of 1.4% comparing with the real airplane dimension. The three-dimensional inviscid steady compressible governing equations were solved by the finite volume method in the unstructured grid system. The convective terms were treated by the Crank-Nicholson and first-order upwind schemes. In the computational results, the strong wing-tip vortices were clearly observed and the pressure contours on the airplane surface were suggested. The lift and drag forces in the wing with engines increase by 1.49% and 3.9%, respectively compared with the case without engines. The aerodynamic forces were estimated quantitatively for each element which consists of the airplane.

  • The influence of different planform parameters on the aerodynamic performance of large-scale subsonic and transonic Blended Wing Body (BWB) aircraft have gained comprehensive research in the recent years, however, it is not the case for small-size low subsonic speed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The present work numerically investigates aerodynamics governing four different trailing edge geometries characterizing BWB configurations in standard flight conditions at angles of attack from $-4^{\circ}$ to $22^{\circ}$ to provide generic information that can be essential for making well-informed decisions during BWB UAV conceptual design phase. Simulation results are discussed and comparatively analyzed with useful implications for formulation of proper mission profile specific to every BWB configuration.
