  • In this study, the cause of rapid intensity change of typhoon Nakri(0208) in view of point of a trough-typhoon interaction using diagnostic methods was examined based on 6-hourly GDAPS data from 10 to 13 July, 2002. At 0000 UTC 13 July, high PV(Potential Vorticity) region moved southeastward, reaching to the western edge of the Korean peninsula and near typhoon center at surface and there shows an increasing value of EFC(Eddy Momentum Flux Convergence). Also, as the trough and typhoon approach one another at the same time, the vertical shear(850-200 hPa) increases to more than 15 m/s. Thus, it might be concluded that the trough-typhoon interaction made intensified significantly, providing the fact that typhoon Nakri(0208) underwent substantial weakening while moving northward to around Jeju island.

  • Torque ripple control of brushless DC motors has been the persisting issue of the servo drive systems in which the speed fluctuation, vibration and acoustic noise should be minimized. In this paper, a novel approach to achieve the ripple-free torque control with maximum efficiency based on the d-q reference frame is presented and analyzed. The proposed approach can provide the optimized phase current waveforms over wide speed range incorporating cogging torque compensation without an access to the neutral point of the motor windings. Moreover, the undesirable errors caused by the assumptions such as 3 phase balance or symmetry of the phase back EMF between electrical cycles, which are related with the manufacturing imperfections, can be also eliminated. As a result, the proposed approach provides a simple and clear way to obtain the optimal motor excitation currents. A hysteresis current control system is employed to produce high-frequency electromagnetic torque ripples for compensation. The validity and applicability of the proposed control scheme to real situations are verified through the simulations and experimental results.

  • Leakage of waterworks pipe line net cause loss of water resources, additional foundation of pressurization facilities from pressure loss and soil weakening near leaked pipe line, etc. This is difficult to maintain and manage waterworks pipe line net and to cause serious economic loss. Rate of accounted water is better by monitoring always water pressure and flux, etc. from isolated region, positively dealing with leakage accident and preventing leakage from occurring. Actually after isolating region, average rate of accounted water in this region is 88.94% by continuously monitering control of water pressure and inflow rate. It is about 9.44% more than that of Busan metropolitan city in 2003, 79.5%.

  • Electric drive vehicles (EDV) have received much attention recently because of their environmental and energy benefits. In an EDV, the motor drive system directly influences the performance of the propulsion system. However, the available DC voltage is limited, which limits the maximum speed of the motors. At high speeds, the inverter voltage increases if the square wave (SW) voltage (six-step operation) is used. Although conventional direct torque control (DTC) has several advantages, it cannot work in the six-step mode required in high-speed applications. In this paper, a single-mode seamless DTC for AC motors is proposed. In this scheme, the trajectory of the reference flux changes continuously between circular and hexagonal paths. Therefore, the armature voltage changes smoothly from a high-frequency switching pattern to a square wave pattern without torque discontinuity. In addition, because multi-mode controllers are not used, implementation is more straightforward. Simulation results show the voltage pattern changes smoothly when the motor speed changes, and consequently, torque control without torque discontinuity is possible in the field weakening area even with a six-step voltage pattern.

  • In order to understand the change of surface water temperature in the East China Sea (ECS), this study analyzed the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST), air temperature (AT) and heat flux using satellite and model reanalysis data from 2003 to 2017. SST in the ECS showed the lowest (average : $13.72^{\circ}C$) in March and the highest (average : $28.12^{\circ}C$) in August. AT is highly correlated with SST and shows a similar seasonal change. In August, SST is higher than AT and then continuously higher than AT until winter. To analyze the change of the summer SST in the ECS, we used the SST anomaly value in August to classify the periods with positive (04', 06', 07', 13', 16', 17') and negative (03', 05', 08', 09', 10', 11', 12', 14', 15') values. Spatial similarity between the two periods indicates that SSTs are relatively larger variations in the northern part than in the southern part, and in the western part than in the eastern part in the study area. AT and net heat flux values also show similar changes with SST. However, the periods of the positive SST anomaly have the relatively increasing SST, AT and heat flux values compared to the periods of the negative SST anomaly in the summer season of the ECS. Although the change of SST in the summer season generally well correlates with AT, there were the periods when it was different from general trends between SST and AT (10', 12', 15', 16'). SST in August 2010 and 2012 decreased by $0.5^{\circ}C$ from AT. It suggests that the decreasing SST was considered to be caused by the effects of the typhoon passing through the study area. In August 2015, AT was relatively lower than SST (> $0.5^{\circ}C$), which is might be weakening of the East Asian Summer Monsoon. In August 2016, SST and AT show the highest values during the whole study periods, but SST is higher than AT (> $1^{\circ}C$). From satellite and heat flux data, the variations of SST have been shown to be relatively higher in the area of the expansion Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) originated from the China coast. More research is needed to analyze this phenomenon, it is believed as not only the effect of rising AT but also the expansion of the low-salinity water.

  • Sedimentological investigations on surface and suspended sediments were performed in Kwangyang Bay of the middle South Sea in order to reveal recent changes in depositional environments concerning anthropogenic influence. A variety of coastal developments caused the texture of the surface sediments to become distinctively finer, particularly in the southwestern part of the bay. Accordingly, the westward lining sedimentary facies was somewhat simplified from triple-mode distribution to the dual-mode one by the construction of POSCO. This east-west distribution to the sedimentary facies has recently graded into the north-south distribution by further construction of other industrial complexes including Kwangyang Port. The prominent textural changes in surface sediments are most likely associated with weakening of tidal currents related to the developments which is anticipated to be .still continued. The distribution and flux estimation of suspended sediments suggest a noticeable import of fine particles into the bay predominantly through a northern entrance rather than the southern entrance. The movements of suspended sediments in the water level near the seabed prevailed over those of the mid and surficial levels.

  • This paper presents a implementation method of reliable speed limitation controller considering motor parameter variation in high speed operation. In spinning process of drum washing machine, speed increase has to be limited when unallowable imbalance mass is detected. Otherwise, severe noise and vibration can happen because noise and vibration are proportional to imbalance mass. To detect imbalance mass, d-axis current magnitude is used. However, we have to compensate for back-emf and power supply variation by means of detecting them because d-axis current is affected by both of them. On the other hand, we have to carefully estimate back-emf because back-emf is affected by stator resistance variation and inverter voltage error. Stator resistance variation can happen by manufacturing process for mass production or temperature variation in running. And there are inverter voltage errors between command voltage from micro-computer to inverter and real voltage from inverter to motor because of rising and falling time delay and turn-on resistance of power semiconductor switch. To solve this problem, we propose 2-step align current injection method which is to inject step-wise current right before starting. By this method, we can simply obtain stator resistance by ratio of voltage without inverter voltage error and current, and we can measure inverter voltage error. So we can obtain more exact model current, and then by simple calculation with compensation gain, we can estimate more accurate motor back-emf. We show that this method works well. It is verified through experiments.

  • Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) have gained an increasing popularity in recent years for a variety of industrial applications, because of their high power density, high efficiency and possibility of flux weakening operation. Because the efficiency of IPMSM is one of the important performance characteristic, the Maximum Torque Per Ampere(MTPA) operating method has been indispensible. In theory, MTPA operating point can be calculated using the exact values of the machine parameters. However, the values of the IPMSM parameters are known to vary widely according to the operating condition. Therefore, to operate the IPMSM in the MTPA operating point, the machine parameters should be estimated in real-time. In this paper, the new MTPA operating method based on the signal injection is presented. By injecting the high frequency current signal, the MTPA operating criteria can be calculated by measuring the input power to IPMSM. The proposed method can find the MTPA operating point with simple signal processing regardless of the parameter variation.

  • This study was conducted to determine and compare the effects of yeast yeast culture (YC) and vitamin E (VE) supplementation on endotoxin absorption and antioxidant status in lactating dairy goats suffering from heat stress (HS). Three first lactation Saanen dairy goats (body weight $30{\pm}1.5kg$) were surgically fitted with indwelling catheters in the portal vein, mesenteric vein and carotid artery, and were randomly assigned to a $3{\times}3$ Latin square design. Dietary treatments were the basal diet, and the basal diet supplemented with either 100 IU VE or 30 g YC. Goats were kept in temperature and humidity-controlled room at $35^{\circ}C$ from 8:00 to 20:00 and at $24^{\circ}C$ from 20:00 till the next morning at 8:00. The relative humidity was kept at 55%. HS increased dairy goats' rectum temperature and respiration frequency (p<0.01). HS reduced plasma flux rate of milk goats (p<0.01), but the plasma flux rate increased when the animal was under the conditions of the thermo-neutral period (p<0.01). The VE supplementation lowered dairy goats' rectum temperature during thermo-neutral period (p<0.01). Meanwhile, no significant differences were observed between the control and YC treatment in rectum temperature and respiration frequency (p>0.05). Dietary supplementation of VE and YC reduced heat stressed dairy goats' endotoxin concentration of the carotid artery and portal vein (p<0.01). However, the endotoxin concentration of the YC treatment was higher than that of the VE treatment (p<0.01). Both VE and YC supplementation decreased heat stressed dairy goats' absorption of endotoxin in portal vein (p<0.01). The endotoxin absorption of YC treatment was higher than the VE treatment (p<0.01). The addition of VE and YC decreased dairy goats' superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentration during HS and the whole experiment period (p<0.01). The addition of VE lowered SOD concentration during thermo-neutral period (p<0.01). Likewise, the addition of VE and YC lowered dairy goats' malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration during HS and the whole experimental period, and the MDA concentration in the VE treatment was lower than the YC treatment (p<0.05). The addition of VE decreased MDA concentration during thermo-neutral period. On the contrast, the addition of VE increased dairy goats total antioxidant potential (TAP) concentration during HS, thermo-neutral and the whole experimental period (p<0.01). The addition of YC increased TAP concentration only during HS period (p<0.01). It is concluded that both VE and YC are useful in alleviating HS of dairy goats by weakening endotoxin absorption and promoting antioxidant capacity. Compared with YC, VE is much more powerful in easing dairy goats HS.
