To investigate the optimum brazing condition, variation of bonded structure and mechanical properties of novel brazed pure Al with bonding condition (brazing temperature, time and Si/flux ratio) was studied. A basic study of the bonding mechanism was also examined. The optimum brazing condition was obtained at $590^{\circ}$ for 2 minutes and the bonded structure showed that it is composed of almost entirely eutectic Al-Si with near eutectic composition. At higher brazing temperature $630^{\circ}$, hypoeutectic Al-Si structure was observed in the bonded area and resulted in erosion of base metal. The thickness of eutectic layer formed in optimum brazing temperature increased linearly with the square root of time, showing a general diffusion controlled process. The ultimate tensile strength of bonded joint brazed at an optimum brazing condition was about 60% of base metal and its fracture surface showed a brittle mode.
In an entrained flow coal gasifier, predicting the reaction behavior of pulverized coal particles requires detailed information on devolatilization, char gasification, gaseous reactions, turbulence and heat transfer. Among the input parameters, the rate of devolatilization and the composition of volatile species are difficult to determine by experiments due to a high pressure (~40 bar) and temperature (${\sim}1500^{\circ}C$). This study investigates the effect of devolatilization models on the reaction and heat transfer characteristics of a 300 MWe Shell coal gasifier. A simplified devolatilization model and advanced model based on Flashchain were evaluated, which had different volatiles composition and devolatilization rates. It was found that the tested models produce similar flow and reaction trends, but the simplified model slightly over-predict the temperature and wall heat flux near the coal inlets.
The origin of the inhomogeneous distribution of photoluminescence (PL) peak wavelength on a commercial 2" GaN wafer for green light emitting diode has been investigated by wide momentum transfer (Q) range x-ray diffraction (XRD) profile of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells. Near the GaN (0004) Bragg peak, wide-Q range XRD (${\Delta}Q$ > $1.4{\AA}-1$) was measured along the growth direction. Wide-Q XRD gives precise and direct information of ultra-thin InGaN quantum well structure. Based on the QW structural information, the variation of PL spectra can be explained by the combined effect of temperature gradient and slightly uneven flow of atomic sources during the QW growth. In narrow variations of indium composition and thickness of QW, an effective indium composition can be a good character to match structural data to PL spectra.
The reduction behavior of $Nb_2O_5$ in aluminum containing self-reducing briquettes(SRNB) was investigated. The time required for slag/metal equilibrium was estimated as about 20 minutes from the addition of SRNB on to the surface of molten steel. The maximum yield of Nb was expected with the slag composition of $60\%CaO-40\%Al_2O_3$. When $CaCO_3$ was used as a flux, the oxidation loss of Al by $CO_2$ should be compensated, and the chemical equivalent ratio of Al to $Nb_2O_5$ of about 1.43 was required to maximize the yield of Nb.
This paper deals with the separation of MTBE-methanol mixtures using crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes with sulfur-succinic acid(SSA) as a crosslinking agent by pervaporation and vapor permeation technique. The operating temperatures, methanol concentration in feed mixtures, and SSA concentrations in PVA membranes were varied to investigate the separation performance of PVA/SSA membranes and the optimum separation characteristics by pervaporation and vapor permeation. And also, for PVA/SSA membranes, the swelling measurements were carried out to study the transport phenomena. The swelling measurements were carried out for pure MTBE and methanol, and MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures using PVA/SSA membranes with varying SSA compositions. There are two factors of the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding. In pervaporation separation was also carried out for MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures at various temperatures. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The crosslinking effect might be over the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 3 and 5% SSA membranes, and this two factors act vice versa on 7% SSA membrane. In this case, the 5% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2,095 with the flux of 12.79g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$ which this mixtures show near the azeotopic composition. Compared to pervaporation, vapor permeation showed less flux and similar separation factor. In this case, the flux decreased significantly because of compact structure and the effect of hydrogen bonding. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vaporous feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membranes shows the highest separation factor of 2,187 with the flux of 4.84g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$.

The feasibility of skin penetration was studied for aspalatone (AM, acetylsalicylic acid maltol ester), a novel antithrombotic agent. In this studys hairless mouse dorsal skins were used as a model to select composition of vehicle and AM. Based on measurements of solubility and partition coefficient, the concentration of PC that showed the highest flux for AM across the hairless mouse skin was found to be 40%. The cumulative amount permeated at 48 h, however, appear inadequate, even when the PC concentration was employed. To identify a suitable absorption enhancer and its optimal concentration for AM, a number of absorption enhancers and a variety of concentration were screened for the increase in transdermal flux of AM. Amongst these, linoleic acid (LOA) at the concentration of 5% was found to have the largest enhancement factor (i.e., 132). However, a further increase in AM flux was not found in the fatty acid concentration greater than 5%, indicating the enhancement effect is in a bell-shaped currie. In a study of the effect of AM concentration on the permeation, there was no difference in the permeation rate between 0.5 and 1% for AM, below its saturated concentration. At the donor concentration of 2%, over the saturated condition, the flux of AM was markedly increased. A considerable degradation of AM was found during permeation studies, and the extent was correlated with protein concentrations in the epidermal and serosal extracts, and skin homogenates. In rat dorsal skins, the protein concentration decreased in the rank order of skin homogenate > serosal extract > epidermal extract. Estimated first order degradation rate constants were $6.15{\pm}0.14,{\;}0.57{\pm}0.02{\;}and{\;}0.011{\pm}{\;}0.004{\;}h^{-1}$ for skin homogenate, serosal extract and epidermal extract, respectively. Therefore, it appeared that AM was hydrolyzed to some extent into salicylmaltol by esterases in the dermal and subcutaneous tissues of skin. taken together, our data indicated that transdermal delivery of AM is feasible when the combination of PC and LOA is used as a vehicle. However, since AM is not metabolically stable, acceptable degradation inhibitors may be nervessary to fully realize the transdermal delivery of the drug.

Membrane separation is widely used for several applications such as water treatment, membrane reactors and climate change. Cross-linked organic-inorganic hybrid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) / Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was adopted for the preparation of optimized hollow membrane (HFM) for membrane distillation or other low pressure separators for mechanical properties and permeability under varying pretreatment schemes. HFMs were prepared on semi-pilot membrane fabrication system. Novel adopted post-treatment schemes involved soaking in glycerol, magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and isopropanol for different durations. All fibers were characterized for morphology using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface roughness using atomic force microscope (AFM), elemental composition by examining Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), water contact angle (CA°) and porosity. The performance of the fibers was evaluated for pure water permeation flux (PWF). Post-treatment with MgSO4 gave the highest both tensile modulus and flux. Assessment of properties and performance revealed comparable results with other organic-inorganic separators, HF or flat. In spite of few reported data on post treatment using MgSO4 in presence of TEOS, this proves the potential of low cost treatment without negative impact on other membrane properties. The flux is also comparable with hypochlorite which manifests substantial precaution requirements in actual industrial use.The relatively high values of flux/bar for sample treated with TEOS, post treated with MgSO4 and hypochlorite are 88 and 82 LMH/bar respectively.
