  • A time-series sediment trap was deployed at 1,034 m water depth in the eastern Bransfield Strait from December 25, 1998 to December 24, 1999. About 99 % of total mass fluxes were observed during the austral summer and fall (January, February, and March). The annual total mass flux was $49.2g\;m^{-2}$. Biogenic materials including biogenic silica, organic matter, and carbonate accounted for about 67% of total particle flux, and lithogenic materials contributed about 29%. Biogenic silica was the most dominant (42% of the total flux) in these components. The next most important biogenic component was organic matter, comprising 24% of total mass flux. Calcium carbonate contributed a small fraction of total mass flux, only 0.6%. The annual organic carbon flux was $5.2g\;C\;m^{-2}$ at 1,034m water depth. The annual primary production was estimated to be $21.6g\;C\;m^{-2}$ at the sediment trap site, which seems to be highly underestimated. About 5.5% of the surface water production of organic carbon sinks below 1,034m water depth.

  • We make a gonioradiometer to realize the scales of total luminous flux and total spectral flux from standards of irradiance and illuminance. Transferring of the photometric scales to a radiometric base has been completed by using a new goniometer to realize a scale of total luminous flux from the scale of illuminance. This is done by measuring the flux emanating from an optical source in different directions and integrating it over an entire imaginary surface surrounding the source. This method is suggested for the realization of the scales of total luminous flux and geometrically total spectral flux. The combined uncertainty of a total flux in the KRISS gonioradiometry is 1 % in the condition of 95% reliance.

  • This study was carried out estimating the dry deposition flux of $SO_2$at eight urban areas in Korea during one year of 1996. To calculate the deposition flux, deposition velocities were calculated by turbulence parameters estimated from routine meteorological data. Also, hourly averaged $SO_2$concentrations which calculated from air pollution monitoring data of each city were used. The dry deposition velocities were mostly higher in the coastal areas than the other areas, which would be caused by relatively strong wind. And, they were high in the daytime because of turbulence activities. The deposition flux of $SO_2$is mainly related to the atmospheric concentration. The annual average $SO_2$concentration and the deposition flux were 22.62ppb and 1510.52g/$\textrm{km}^2$/hr at Pusan respectively. Also, the flux was higher in winter than other season, which was a significant contribution of exhausted fuel for heating. While the deposition velocity was high to 0.688cm/sec at Yosu in case of strong wind and small cloud cover, the deposition flux was high to 1597.4g/$\textrm{km}^2$/hr at Pusan in case of weak wind and small cloud cover.

  • We apply differential affine velocity estimator (DAVE) to the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) 12-min line-of-sight magnetograms, and separately calculate the injected magnetic helicity for the leading and the following polarities of nine emerging bipolar active regions (ARs). Comparing magnetic helicity flux of the leading polarity with the following polarity, we find that six ARs studied in this paper have the following polarity that injected more magnetic helicity flux than that of the leading polarity. We also measure the mean area of each polarity in all the nine ARs, and find that the compact polarity tend to possess more magnetic helicity flux than the fragmented one. Our results confirm the previous studies on asymmetry of magnetic helicity that emerging bipolar ARs have a polarity preference in injecting magnetic helicity. Based on the changes of unsigned magnetic flux, we divide the emergence process into two evolutionary stages: (1) an increasing stage before the peak flux and (2) a constant or decreasing stage after the peak flux. Obvious changes on magnetic helicity flux can be seen during transition from one stage to another. Seven ARs have one or both polarity that changed the sign of magnetic helicity flux. Additionally, the prevailing polarity of the two ARs, which injects more magnetic helicity, changes form the following polarity to the leading one.

  • The most important thing in Plasma simulation is the etching process in which etch rate is calculated based on feature profile. Although there are various components to consider in calculating etch rate such as Ion Flux, Neutral, gas, and temperature, Addressing of this paper is limited to Ion Flux. This paper propose a scan method to compute Ion Flux faster for Plasma simulation. Also, this paper experiments and compares generally used Monte Carlo method and the proposed method based on gaussian and cosine distribution. Lastly, this paper proves that the proposed method can calculate accurate Ion Flux more efficiently than Monte Carlo method.

  • Central 60° synchronous modulation is an easy pulse-width modulation (PWM) method to implement for the traction inverters of urban rail trains at a very low switching frequency. Unfortunately, its switching patterns are determined by a Fourier analysis of assumed steady-state voltages. As a result, its transient responses are not very good with over-currents and high instantaneous torque pulses. In the proposed solution, the switching patterns of the conventional central 60° modulation are modified according to the dynamic error between the target and actual stator flux. Then, the specific trajectory of the stator flux and current vector can be guaranteed, which leads to better system transients. In addition, stator flux control is introduced to get smooth mode switching between the central 60° modulation and the other PWMs in this paper. A detailed flow chart of the control signal transmission is given. The target flux is obtained by an integral of the target voltage. The actual PMSM flux is estimated by a minimum order flux state observer based on the extended flux model. Based on a two-level inverter model, improved rules in the α-β stationary coordinate system and equations of the switching patterns amendment are proposed. The proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • The demand on quantitative measurement of the heat flux is motivated in making higher-quality steel product through a water quenching process of plate mill. To improve a spatial degree of heat flux measurement, the multi-point heat flux measurement was carried out by a unique experimental technique that has a combination of the existing single-point heat flux gauge. The corresponding heat flux can be easily determined by Fourier's law in a conventional way. The multi-point heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure the surface heat flux, the surface heat transfer coefficient during a water quenching applications of steelmaking process. The results exhibit different heat transfer regimes; such as single-phase forced convection, nucleate boiling, and film boiling, that are occurred in close proximity on the multi-point heat flux gauge quenched by water impinging jet.

  • The energy balance of the surface layer of the water (the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the East Sea) was examined using satellite data. Variations of the net heat flux were similar to those of the latent heat flux which was more intensive than the sensible heat flux. The sensible heat flux was affected the difference between the sea surface temperature and the air temperature and was less important over the Yellow Sea. The maximum of the latent heat flux occurred in autumn when the air is drier and the wind is stronger. The shortwave radiation flux decreased with the latitude and depended on the cloudiness as the longwave radiation flux does. Annual variations of heat fluxes show that the latent heat flux was more intensive over the East China Sea than the East Sea and the Yellow Sea, while the spatial differences of the other heat fluxes were weak.

  • This paper investigates optimum air-gap flux distribution with third harmonic rotor flux orientation adjustment for five-phase induction motor. The technique of objective is to generate a nearly rectangular air-gap flux, and it improves iron utilization under variation loading conditions. The proportional relations between third harmonic and fundamental plane currents is usually adopted in the conventional method. However, misalignment between fundamental and third harmonic component occurs with variation loading. The iron of stator teeth is saturated due to this misalignment. This problem is solved by third harmonic rotor flux orientation adjustment simultaneously, and direction and amplitude are changed with mechanical load variation. The proposed method ensures that the air-gap flux density is near rectangular for a maximum value from no load to rated load. It is confirmed that the proposed method guarantees complete both planes decoupling with third harmonic flux orientation adjustment. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is validated experimentally.

  • For high efficiency and easy speed control of brushless DC (BLDC) motor, the demand of BLDC motor is increasing. Especially demand of interior permanent magnet (IPM) BLDC with high efficiency and high power in electric motion vehicle is increasing. However, IPM BLDC basically has a high cogging torque that results from the interaction of permanent magnet magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonics and air-gap permeance harmonics due to slotting. This cogging torque generates vibration and acoustic noises during the driving of motor. Thus reduction of the cogging torque has to be considered in IPM BLDC motor design by analytical methods. This paper proposes the cogging torque reduction method for IPM BLDC motor. For reduction of cogging torque of IPM BLDC motor, this paper describes new technique of the flux barriers design. The proposed method uses sinusoidal form of flux density to reduce the cogging torque. To make the sinusoidal air-gap flux density, flux barriers are applied in the rotor and flux barriers that installed in the rotor produce the sinusoidal form of flux density. Changing the number of flux barrier, the cogging torque is analyzed by finite element method. Also characteristics of designed model by the proposed method are analyzed by finite element method.
