As central-slotted box decks usually have excellent flutter performance, studies on this type of deck mostly focus on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) control. Yet with the increasing span lengths, cable-supported bridges may have critical wind speeds of wind-induced static instability lower than that of the flutter. This is especially likely for bridges with a central-slotted box deck. As a result, the overall aerodynamic performance of such a bridge will depend on its wind-induced static stability. Taking a 1400 m-main-span cable-stayed bridge as an example, this study investigates the influence of a series of deck shape parameters on both static and flutter instabilities. Some crucial shape parameters, like the height ratio of wind fairing and the angle of the inner-lower web, show opposite influences on the two kinds of instabilities. The aerodynamic shape optimization conducted for both static and flutter instabilities on the deck based on parameter-sensitivity studies raises the static critical wind speed by about 10%, and the overall critical wind speed by about 8%. Effective VIV countermeasures for this type of bridge deck have also been proposed.
Recent development of a smart structures module and its successful integration with a multidisciplinary design optimization software $ASTROS^*$ and an Aeroservoelasticity module is presented. A modeled F-16 wing using piezoelectric actuators is used as an example to demonstrate the integrated software capability to design a flutter suppression system. For an active control design, neural network based controller is used for this study. A smart structures module is developed by modifying the existing thermal loads module in $ASTROS^*$ in order to include the effects of the induced strain due to piezoelectric actuation. The control surface/piezoelectric equivalence model principle is developed, which ensures the interchangeability between the control surface force input and the piezoelectric force input to the Aeroservoelasticity modules in $ASTROS^*$. The results show that the developed controller can increase the flutter speed.

Nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of a missile control fin are performed considering backlash and dynamic stiffness of actuator. Doublet-Hybrid method is used for the calculation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces, and aerodynamic forces are approximated by the minimum-state approximation. For nonlinear flutter analysis backlash is represented by a free-play and is linearized by using the describing function method. Also, dynamic stiffness is function of frequency and is calculated by solving equation of motion for actuator. The linear and nonlinear flutter analyses show that the aeroelastic characteristics are significantly dependent on the backlash and dynamic stiffness. From the nonlinear flutter analysis, various types of limit cycle oscillations are observed in a range of air speeds below the linear divergent flutter boundary. The nonlinear flutter characteristics and the nonlinear aeroelastic responses are also investigated in the time domain.

In this study, a nonlinear control by feedback linearization method, one of nonlinear control schemes based on the nonlinear model, is proposed to suppress the flutter of a supersonic composite panel using piezoelectric materials. Most of the previous panel flutter controllers are the LQR(Linear Quadratic Regulator) which is based on the linear model. A nonlinear feedback linearizing controller proposed in this study considers the nonlinear characteristics of the system model. We use the actuator implemented by piezoceramic PZT. Using the principle of virtual displacements and a finite element discretization with the conforming four-node rectangular element, we first derive the discretized dynamic equations of motion, which are transformed into a nonlinear coupled-modal equations of motion of state space form. The effectiveness of the proposed method is also compared with the LQR based on the linear model through numerical simulations in the time domain using the Newmark method.

The paper studies effect of quasi-periodic or airplane flutter phenomenon on television broadcasting signal. Airplane flutter is a very important problem. It causes the receiving antenna to receive both direct signal by the Tx (Transmitter antenna) and reflected signal scattered by the airplane with phase delay. The sum of two signals results in fading, sometime collapse and distortion of picture on TV screen. We performed measurement and modeling this phenomenon on TV signal when the airplane flew across and range Tx and Rx (Receiver antenna). The frequency 60.75MHz (Aural frequency of CH3) is used under tests. A single scatter multipath model is introduced. It is used to duplicate some of the measured data and show the dependence of power variation on the airplane fluttering. The fluctuation of the airplane flutter phenomenon was calculated to be around 2-4dB. The Yaki antenna is used for improving airplane flutter problem because it can make high gain and high directivity.
A two dimensional discrete vortex method (DIVEX) has been developed to predict unsteady and incompressible flow fields around closed bodies. The basis of the method is the discretisation of the vorticity field, rather than the velocity field, into a series of vortex particles that are free to move in the flow field that the particles collectively induce. This paper gives a brief description of the numerical implementation of DIVEX and presents the results of calculations on a recent suspension bridge deck section. The predictions for the static section demonstrate that the method captures the character of the flow field at different angles of incidence. In addition, flutter derivatives are obtained from simulations of the flow field around the section undergoing vertical and torsional oscillatory motion. The subsequent predictions of the critical flutter velocity compare well with those from both experiment and other computations. A brief study of the effect of flow control vanes on the aeroelastic stability of the bridge is also presented and the results from DIVEX are shown to be in accordance with previous analytical and experimental studies. In conclusion, the results indicate that DIVEX is a very useful design tool in the field of wind engineering.

Active aeroelastic control is an emerging technology aimed at providing solutions to structural systems that under the action of aerodynamic loads are prone to instability and catastrophic failures, and to oscillations that can yield structural failure by fatigue. The purpose of the aeroelastic control among others is to alleviate and even suppress the vibrations appearing in the flight vehicle subcritical flight regimes, to expand its flight envelope by increasing the flutter speed, and to enhance the post-flutter behavior usually characterized by the presence of limit cycle oscillations. Recently adaptive and robust control strategies have demonstrated their superiority to classical feedback strategies. This review paper discusses the latest development on the topic by the authors. First, the available control techniques with focus on adaptive control schemes are reviewed, then the attention is focused on the advanced single-input and multi-input multi-output adaptive feedback control strategies developed for lifting surfaces operating at subsonic and supersonic flight speeds. A number of concepts involving various adaptive control methodologies, as well as results obtained with such controls are presented. Emphasis is placed on theoretical and numerical results obtained with the various control strategies.
Open decks are a widely used deck configuration in long-span cable-stayed bridges; however, incorporating aerodynamic countermeasures are advisable to achieve better aerodynamic performance than a bluff body deck alone. A sectional model of an open deck cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 400 m was selected to conduct a series of wind tunnel tests. The influences of five practical aerodynamic countermeasures on flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance were investigated and are presented in this paper. The results show that an aerodynamic shape selection procedure can be used to evaluate the flutter stability of decks with respect to different terrain types and structural parameters. In addition, the VIV performance of $\prod$-shaped girders for driving comfortableness and safety requirements were evaluated. Among these aerodynamic countermeasures, apron boards and wind fairings can improve the aerodynamic performance to some extent, while horizontal guide plates with 5% of the total deck width show a significant influence on the flutter stability and VIV. A wind fairing with an angle of $55^{\circ}C$ showed the best overall control effect but led to more lock-in regions of VIV. The combination of vertical stabilisers and airflow-depressing boards was found to be superior to other countermeasures and effectively boosted aerodynamic performance; specifically, vertical stabilisers significantly contribute to improving flutter stability and suppressing vertical VIV, while airflow-depressing boards are helpful in reducing torsional VIV.
In this paper, two methods to suppress flutter of the composite panel are examined. First, in the active control method, a controller based on the linear optimal control theory is designed and control input voltage is applied on the actuators and a PZT is used as actuator. Second, a new technique, passive suppression scheme, is suggested for suppression of the nonlinear panel flutter. In the passive suppression scheme, a shunt circuit which consists of inductor-resistor is used to increase damping of the system and as a result the flutter can be attenuated. A passive damping technology, which is believed to be more robust suppression system in practical operation, requires very little or no electrical power and additional apparatuses such as sensor system and controller are not needed. To achieve the great actuating force/damping effect, the optimal shape and location of the actuators are determined by using genetic algorithms. The governing equations are derived by using extended Hamilton's principle. They are based on the nonlinear von Karman strain-displacement relationship for the panel structure and quasi-steady first-order piston theory for the supersonic airflow. The discretized finite element equations are obtained by using 4-node conforming plate element. A modal reduction is performed to the finite element equations in order to suppress the panel flutter effectively and nonlinear-coupled modal equations are obtained. Numerical suppression results, which are based on the reduced nonlinear modal equations, are presented in time domain by using Newmark nonlinear time integration method.

Investigation is performed on the stability of general form of dynamic system under colored noise random disturbance whose damping and stiffness are varying in irregular manner along time, which is a preliminary result in the course of research on the characteristic and the control of the stochastic system. Adopted physical model is airfoil under random atmospheric disturbance, which becomes a "time-varying system" whose the governing equation is derived via F-P-K approach in stochastic sense. Control performance and effect of 'Heo-stochastic controller for colored noise' is studied. Also stochastic feature of flutter boundary is discussed as well.
