A finite element aerodynamic model that can be used to analyse flutter instability of long span bridges in the time domain is presented. This approach adopts a simplified quasi-steady formulation of the wind forces neglecting the vortex shedding effects. The governing equations used are effective only for reduced velocities $V^*$ sufficiently great: this is generally acceptable for long-span suspension bridges and, then, the dependence of the wind forces expressions of the flutter derivatives can be neglected. The procedure describes the mechanical response in an accurate way, taking into account the non-linear geometry effects (large displacements and large strains) and considering also the compressed locked coil strands instability. The time-dependence of the inertia force due to fluid structure interaction is not considered. The numerical examples are performed on the three-dimensional finite element model of the Great Belt East Bridge (DK). A mode frequency analysis is carried out to validate the model and the results show good agreement with the experimental measurements of the full bridge aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel tests. Significant parameters affecting bridge response are introduced and accurately investigated.

In this study, simplified whirl flutter analyses using quasisteady aerodynamic theory have been Performed for a 2-DOF tiIt-rotor system with both pitch and Yaw motions of a rotor-nacelle. The present dynamic system consists of the rotor (propeller) , forming the gyroscopic and aerodynamic element, supported horizontally by a pylon that is pivoted at some wing attachment point. Several design parameters for rotor-nacelle system are considered to practically investigate the effects of whirl flutter stability.

Recently, development of electric powered UAV for high altitude and long endurance mission has been conducted worldwide. Long endurance requirement necessitates high lift over drag (L/D) aerodynamic characteristics and lightweight structures, leading to highly flexible wings with high aspect ratio. These highly flexible wings increase the danger of catastrophic aircraft failure due to flutter, which is a dynamic aeroelastic instability occurring from the interaction of aerodynamic, inertial, and elastic forces acting on the aircraft flying through the air. In this paper, flexible wing for electric powered UAV whose skin is fabricated using mylar film for lightweight design is briefly explained. In addition, flutter analysis procedures and results for the flexible wing in order to substantiate the aeroelastic stability requirements are presented.

In this paper, the stability of a cracked cantilever Timoshenko beam with a tip mass subjected to follower force is investigated. In addition, an analysis of the flutter instability(flutter critical follower force) and a critical natural frequency of a cracked cantilever Euler / Timoshenko beam with a tip mass subjected to a follower force is presented. The vibration analysis on such cracked beam is conducted to identify the critical follower force for flutter instability based on the variation of the first two resonant frequencies of the beam. Therefore, the effect of the crack's intensity, location and a tip mass on the flutter follower force is studied. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations.
This paper describes the modeling data and final analysis results of rotor resonance, rotor aeroelastic stability and whirl flutter stability for Smart UAV (SUAV). The effects of wing beamwise, chordwise and torsional stiffness on the whirl flutter stability were investigated considering the possibility of design change of SUAV wing structure. The parametric study showed that wing torsional and beamwise stiffness changes have much stronger influence on the wing mode damping than chordwise stiffness. It was analytically demonstrated that the final designed rotor system is aeroelastically stable and free from resonance, and that rotor/pylon/wing system of SUAV TR-S4 has enough rotor stability and whirl flutter stability margin.

Tiltrotor aircraft can fly about twice faster and several times further than conventional helicopters. These aircraft provide advantages preventing compressibility of advancing side and stall of retreating side of blades because they take forward flight with tilting rotor systems. However, they have limit on forward flight speed because of the aeroelastic instability known as whirl flutter. First, the parametric study on the aeroelastic stability of the isolated rotor system has been performed in this paper. And the effects of pitch-link stiffness, gimbal spring constant, and precone angle on the whirl flutter stability of Smart-UAV have been investigated through CAMRAD II analysis.

In this paper, limit cycle flutter induced by Hopf bifurcation is studied with nonlinear system analysis approach and observed for the critical slowing down phenomenon. Considering an attractor of the dynamics of a system, when a small perturbation is applied to the system, the dynamics converge toward the attractor at some rate. The critical slowing down means that this recovery rate approaches zero as a parameter of the system varies and the size of the basin of attraction shrinks to nil. Consequently, in the pre-bifurcation regime, the recovery rates decrease as the system approaches the bifurcation. This phenomenon is one of the features used to forecast bifurcation before they actually occur. Therefore, studying the critical slowing down for limit cycle flutter behavior would have potential applicability for forecasting those types of flutter. Herein, modeling and nonlinear system analysis of the 2D airfoil with torsional nonlinearity have been discussed, followed by observation of the critical slowing down phenomenon.
Nonlinear aeroelastic analyses of composite wing with flap are performed considering free-play and dynamic stiffness of actuator. Doublet-Hybrid method is used for the calculation of subsonic unsteady aerodynamic forces. Free-play is modeled as a bilinear spring and is linearized by using the describing function method. Dynamic stiffness is obtained from governing equation of gear system and the aeroelastic analyses were performed according to ply-angle of laminate and material. The linear and nonlinear flutter analysis results show that the flutter characteristics are significantly dependent on the free-play and dynamic stiffness. from the nonlinear flutter analysis, various types of limit cycle oscillations are observed in a range of air speeds below or above the linear divergent flutter boundary.

The aircrafts with high aspect ratio wings made by a composite material have been developed, which enable high energy efficiency and long-term flight by reducing air resistance and structural weight. However, they have difficulties in securing the aeroelastic stability such as the flutter because of their long and flexible wings. The flutter is unstable self-excited-vibration caused by interaction between the structural dynamics and the aerodynamics. It should be verified analytically prior to first flight test that the flutter does not happen in the range of flight mission. Normally, the finite element model is used for the flutter analysis. So it is important to construct the finite element model representing dynamic characteristics similar to those of a real aircraft. Accordingly, in this research, to acquire dynamic characteristics experimentally the modal test of the aircraft with high aspect ratio composite wings was conducted. And then the modal parameters from the finite element analysis(FEA) were compared with those from the modal test. To make analysis results closer to test results, the finite element model was updated by means of the sensitivity analysis on variables and the optimization. Finally, it was proved that the updated finite element model is reliable as compared with the results of the modal test.
This paper presents the flutter analysis and optimum design of axially functionally graded box beam cantilever wing section by considering various geometric and material parameters. The coupled dynamic equations of the continuous model of wing system in terms of material and cross-sectional properties are formulated based on extended Hamilton's principle. By expressing the lift and pitching moment in terms of plunge and pitch displacements, the resultant two continuous equations are simplified using Galerkin's reduced order model. The flutter velocity is predicted from the solution of resultant damped eigenvalue problem. Parametric studies are conducted to know the effects of geometric factors such as taper ratio, thickness, sweep angle as well as material volume fractions and functional grading index on the flutter velocity. A generalized surrogate model is constructed by training the radial basis function network with the parametric data. The optimized material and geometric parameters of the section are predicted by solving the constrained optimal problem using firefly metaheuristics algorithm that employs the developed surrogate model for the function evaluations. The trapezoidal hollow box beam section design with axial functional grading concept is illustrated with combination of aluminium alloy and aluminium with silicon carbide particulates. A good improvement in flutter velocity is noticed by the optimization.
