고분자전해질 연료전지용 부분 불소계 설폰화 Poly(biphenylene-co-sulfone)ether 막의 제조와 특성 (Preparation and Characteristics of Partially Fluorinated-Sulfonated Poly(biphenylene-co-sulfone)ether Membranes for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell)

  • 불소 관능기인 perfluorocyclobutane(PFCB)기를 함유하는 설폰화된 부분 불소계 poly(biphenyleneco-sulfone)ether 공중합체(SPBS-X)를 제조하였다. 제조과정은 trifluorovinylether그룹을 양 말단에 포함하는 단량체의 합성, 고리화부가 반응형태의 열중합 그리고 후설폰화(post-sulfonation)의 3단계 합성과정을 통하였다. Trifluorovinylether그룹을 양 말단에 포함하는 biphenyl계와 sulfonyl계 단량체를 합성하였고, biphenyl계의 함량을 20 mol%에서 60 mol%까지 조절하면서 고리화부가 반응형태의 열중합을 통해 랜덤 공중합체가 얻어졌다(PBS-X). 후설폰화는 chlorosulfonic acid(CSA)를 사용하여 수행되었으며, 이를 통해 다양한 설폰화도를 가지는 고분자를 합성하였다. $^1H$-NMR, $^{19}F$-NMR 및 FT-IR 분석을 통하여, 제조된 화합물, 단량체 및 중합체들이 성공적으로 합성되었음을 확인하였다. 상온에서 CSA에 대해 설폰화 활성을 가지는 biphenyl기의 함량이 증가함에 따라 이온교환능력(IEC), 함수율 및 이온전도도가 증가하는 경향을 보였고, SPBS-60의 경우 넓은 온도범위(25~80 $^{\circ}C$)에서 Nafion$^{(R)}$-115보다 높은 이온전도도(80 $^{\circ}C$: 0.08 S/cm at RH 100%)를 나타내었다.

  • 약밀려남/잡아당김/급냉각의 연속적인 압출 공정을 이용하여 대면적 불화 고분자 막을 제작하였다. 제안한 방법으로 형성된 불화 고분자 박막은 $C_i=2.9\;nF/cm^2$의 전기용량밀도가 측정되었고, 1kHz에서의 ${\varepsilon}_r$=56의 높은 유전상수를 나타내었다. $1.5406{\AA}$의 파장에서 Bruker AXS X-ray 회절분석기를 통해 $18.0^{\circ}$에서 최고점을 나타내어 전기변형 성능에 적합한 ${\beta}$ 상태를 확인하였다. 본 연구는 넓은 면적의 인공근육에 응용 가능한 전기변형 불화고분자막의 새로운 박막 형성 기술로 이용될 수 있다.

  • Organic/inorganic hybrid membranes have been prepared and evaluated as polymer electrolytes in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Previously, partially fluorinated poly (arylenether) was synthesized and the polymer was sulfonated by fuming sulfuric acid$(30\%\;SO_3)$. Modification of these polymers with coupling agent and inorganic materials was carried out to prepare membranes. Membranes cast from these materials were investigated in relation to the proton conductivity and weight loss at the room temperature. It was found that these membranes had a higher conductivity of $10^{-2}\;Scm^{-1}$ at the room temperature. But inorganic materials have leaked out from the hybrid membrane. If this problem is resolved, organic/inorganic hybrid membranes will become satisfactory Polymer electrolytes for the PEMFC.

연료전지용 불소화 폴리벤즈이미다졸 양성자 교환 멤브레인 합성 및 특성평가 (Synthesis and Characterization of Fluorinated Polybenzimidazole Proton Exchange Membranes for Fuel Cell)

  • A fluorinated polybenzimidazole (FPBI) was synthesized from 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) of tetraamine, 2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane of aromatic biscarboxylic acid, and 4,4-sulfonyldibenzoic acid of aromatic biscarboxylic acid in polyphosphoric acid (PPA). A FPBI was easily cast and made into clear films. The structure of condensation polymers and corresponding membranes were analyzed using GPC (gel permeation chromatography), $^1H$-NMR ($^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance) and FT-IR (fourier transform infrared). TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) analysis showed that the prepared membranes were thermally stable, so that elevated temperature fuel cell operation would be possible. The proton conductivity of the FPBI membranes increased with increasing temperatures in the polymer. A FPBI membrane has a maximum ion conductivity of 45 mS/cm at $90^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity.

  • An object of the present study is to provide a hollow fiber membrane humidifier capable of improving the humidification efficiency while lowering the pressure loss, and is suitably usable for PEMFC(Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell). The performance of PEMFC is decisively dependent on the humidity of the electrolyte membrane(fluorinated membrane) and a humidifier plays an important role in moisturizing electrolyte membrane. Especially this humidifier is adaptable for lower price to promote the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles and is passive type to be power free and to be volumetrically optimized. In this research, we propose the substitutes for the expensive fluorinated materials and the optimum dry-jet wet spinning conditions of hollow fiber membrane to get the fuel cell humidifier. In addition to that we established the standard method of evaluating the moisturizing performance of the humidifier of various materials.

고성능 폴리머 광도파로 소자 (High Performance Polymeric Optical Waveguide Devices)

  • Variable optical attenuators (VOA) made of low-loss fluorinated polymers are demonstrated which shows a low operating power less than 30 mW due to the superior thermo-optic effect of polymer material and a low insertion loss less than 1.0 dB by incorporating highly fluorinated polymers to reduce the absorption loss at 1550 nm. An attenuator-integrated low-crosstalk polymeric digital optical switch (DOS) is also demonstrated. The switch and attenuator shares a single connected electrode which is controlled by a single current source. Due to the simple structure of the integrated attenuator, the device length is reduced to 1 cm so as to provide low insertion loss of 0.8 and 1.1 dB for 1300 and 1550 nm, respectively. The attenuator radiates remained optical signal on the switch-off branch in order to decrease the switching crosstalk to be less than -70 dB with an applied electrical power of 200 mW.

Synthesis and Cyclization of Aromatic Polyhydroxyamides Containing Trifluoromethyl Groups

  • Polyhydroxyamides derivatized with trifluorormethyl ether and trifluoromethyl ester groups were investigated as possible candidates for a new flame retardant polymer. Model compounds for these derivatized polyhydroxyamides were synthesized and their cyclization chemistry was investigated. The model compound study revealed that trifluorornethyl ester group containing model compounds can cyclize on heating, while trifluoromethyl ether group containing model compounds cannot. The non-fluorinated ether and ether derivatives behaved similarly. The trifluoromethyl ester derivatized polyhydroxyamides were synthesized according to the procedures for the model compounds. TGA characterization revealed that the fluorinated polymers have nearly same thermal stability as the underivatized PHA after cyclization.

불소고분자내 유기용매의 비-픽 확산 (Non-Fickian Diffusion of Organic Solvents in Fluoropolymeys)

  • 여러 종류의 불소고분자내로 다양한 유기용매들의 동적 흡수 평형 (혹은 팽윤) 실험을 진행하였다. 불소로 포화된 고분자는 이상적 흡수 거동을 나타내었으나 부분적으로 치환된 불소고분자는 최종 흡수단계에서 가속화되는 비이상적 흡수 거동을 나타내었다. 회귀분석에 의해 픽-확산 거동으로부터 벗어나는 정도를 최소자승법 (즉, ∑ [측정값-예측값]$^2$)으로 구한 결과 -퍼플루오로알콕시 공중합체, 폴리(에틸렌 테트라플루오로에틸렌) 공중합체, 폴리(비닐리덴 플루오라이드), 폴리(에틸렌 클로로트리플루오로에틸렌) 공중합체에 대해 각각 3.0${\times}$$10^{-4}$, 1.75${\times}$$10^{-3}$, 8.68${\times}$$10^{-3}$, 1.75${\times}$$10^{-2}$의 수치를 나타내었다. 응력-변형 실험 결과 비-픽 확산 거동은 팽윤된 불소고분자의 기계적 성질 (탄성률과 인장 강도) 변화와 상관관계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 비이상적 흡수 거동의 주요 원인은 치환된 수소 혹은 염소와 불소원자 간의 전기음성도 차이에 기인한 사슬 간극성 결합 구조가 침투성분의 가소화 효과에 의해 비선형적 이완이 진행되면서 비-픽 확산이 진행되기 때문이다. 따라서 부분적으로 치환된 불소고분자를 차단성 혹은 선택적 투과기능이 요구되는 분야에 적용할 때 가소화 성분에 대한 용해 및 확산 거동에 대한 신중한 고찰이 필요하다.

Polymer-Based Devices for Optical Communications

  • Polymers are emerging as new alternative materials for optical communication devices. We developed two types of polymer-based devices for optical communications. One type is for ultra high-speed signal processing that uses nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers in such devices as electro-optic (EO) Mach-Z${\ddot{e}} $ hnder (MZ) modulators and EO 2${\times}$2 switches. The other is for WDM optical communications that use low-loss optical polymers in such devices as 1${\times}$2, 2${\times}$2, 4-arrayed 2${\times}$2 digital optical switches (DOSs) and 16${\times}$16 arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) routers. For these devices, we synthesized a polyetherimide-disperse red 1 (PEI-DR1) side chain NLO polymer and a low-loss optical polymer known as fluorinated polyaryleneethers (FPAE). This paper presents the details of our development of these polymeric photonic devices considering all aspects from materials to packaging.
