  • Most of the previous studies on natural convection were based on the numerical analysis, and some experimental studies considered the classic case of thermal convection. In this study, an adiabatic square body was located at the center of an enclosure between the bottom hot and top cold walls. And the measurement of the detailed temperature fields was conducted by the method of two-color Laser Induced Fluorescence using a Nd:Yag laser. As a result, heat transfer characteristics of natural convection with an adiabatic body was estimated as a function of time over a range of Rayleigh numbers.

  • Simultaneous CH and OH planar laser induced fluorescence(PLIF) and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry(PIV) measurements have been developed to investigate the local flame structure of turbulent premixed flames. The developed simultaneous two radical concentrations and three component velocity measurements on a two-dimensional plane was applied for relatively high Renolds number turbulent premixed flames in a swirl stabilized combustor. All measurements were conducted for methane-air premixed flames in the corrugated flamelets regime. Strong three-dimensional fluctuation implies that misunderstanding of the flame/turbulent interactions would be caused by the analysis of two-component velocity distribution in a cross section. Furthermore, comparisons of CH-OH PLIF and three-component velocity field show that the burned gases not always have high-speed velocity in relatively high Renolds number turbulent premixed flame.

  • For the purpose of helping development of a GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, the spray behaviors and fuel distributions were investigated in a single cylinder GDI engine. The experimental engine is a swirl type GBI engine with a SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used for the measurement of the fuel distributions. The effects of SCV opening angle and the Injector specifications, such as the spray cone angle and the offset an91e on the fuel distributions characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the SCV opening angle had a great effect on the fuel distributions in the late stage of compression process by changing flow fields in the combustion chamber.

  • 4-Aminobutyrate aminotransferase is a key enzyme of the 4-aminobutyric acid shunt. It converts the neurotransmitter 4-aminobutyric acid to succinic semialdehyde. In order to study the structural and functional aspects of catalytically active Cys residues of pig brain 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase, we purified the active form in E. coli by coproduction of thioredoxin. The structural arrangement for functional requirements of a dimeric protein using a bifunctional sultbydryl reagent was then characterized, and the spatial proximity between the essential SH groups and a cofactor (pyridoxal-5'-phosphate) binding site was determined. The bifunctional sultbydryl reagent DMDS reacted with the enzyme at the ratio of one molecule per enzyme dimer. This resulted in an approximately 50% loss of enzymatic activity. The spatial proximity of the distance between the essential SH groups and the cofactor-binding site was determined by the energy transfer measurement technique. The result (approximate 20 ${\AA}$) suggested that cross-linking of two sulfhydryl groups with DMDS is not near a PLP binding site.

  • This study was undertaken to measure the properties of individual mineral particles in an artificially saturated atmosphere at a vertical extinct mine with 430 m height. By synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) microprobe analysis, it was possible to determine the elemental composition of residual insoluble particles on individual cloud droplet replicas formed on the Collodion film. The XRF visualized elemental maps enabled us not only to presume the chemical mixing state of particles retained in cloud droplet, but also to estimate their source. Details about the individual mineral particles captured by artificial cloud droplets should be helpful to understand about the removal characteristics of dust particles such as interaction with clouds. Nearly all individual particles captured in cloud droplets are strongly enriched in Fe. Mass of Fe is ranged between 41 fg and 360 fg with average 112 fg. There is a good agreement between single particle analysis by SR-XRF and bulk particle analysis by PIXE.

  • Purpose: This paper presents Raman chemical imaging technology for inspecting food and agricultural products. Methods The paper puts emphasis on introducing and demonstrating Raman imaging techniques for practical uses in food analysis. Results & Conclusions: The main topics include Raman scattering principles, Raman spectroscopy measurement techniques (e.g., backscattering Raman spectroscopy, transmission Raman spectroscopy, and spatially offset Raman spectroscopy), Raman image acquisition methods (i.e., point-scan, line-scan, and area-scan methods), Raman imaging instruments (e.g., excitation sources, wavelength separation devices, detectors, imaging systems, and calibration methods), and Raman image processing and analysis techniques (e.g., fluorescence correction, mixture analysis, target identification, spatial mapping, and quantitative analysis). Raman chemical imaging applications for food safety and quality evaluation are also reviewed.

  • Prepared CdSe nanoparticles were systems, one of the most studied and useful nanostructures. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been the subject of much interest for both fundamental reseach and technical applications in recent years, due mainly to their strong size dependent properties and excellent chemical processibility. CdSe nanocrystals were synthesized by using sol-gel process. Synthesized CdSe quantum dots were studied to evaluate the optical, electronic and structural properties using UV-absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) measurement. Prepared CdSe nanoparticles were subjected to sense hydrofluoric acid. Photoluminescence was quenched upon adding of hydrofluoric acid.

  • free volume in polymers is defined as the difference of the specific volume and the volume which is not available for the particular molecular motion which is responsible or the process that is considered . Relations between free volume and viscosity free volume and diffusion coefficient are pre-sented both in the case of simple low molecular weight liquids and in the case of polymers. Molecular models and free volume models are reminded starting from the equilibrium state equation of Simha and Somcynski. The non equilibrium situations of specific volume of glass polymers below Tg are shown introducing different relaxation volume equations which involve different material's parameters and con-cept of the fictitious temperature. The diffusivity equations of Vrentas and Duda are introduced both for the glassy and rubbery states. The possibility of introducing time relaxation functions is also suggested. The importance of finding experimental evidences of the free volume is stressed. highlights of the free volume measurement methods are given in particular as to dilatometry photocromy fluorescence electron spin resonance small angle X-ray scattering positron annihilation spectroscopy.
