The complex nature of low flow mixing in natural channels has been investigated using both laboratory experiments and the numerical solution of a proposed mathematical model that is based on a set of mass balance equations describing the mixing and mass exchange mechanisms. Laboratory experiments, which involved collection of channel geometry, hydraulic, and dye dispersion test data, were conducted in a model of four pool and riffle sequences in a 49-m long tilting flume. The experimental results show that flow over the model pool-riffle sequences is highly non-uniform. Concentration-time curves are significantly skewed with long tails. Comparison between measured and predicted concentration-time curves shows good agreement in the general shape, peak concentration and time to peak. The proposed model shows significant improvement over the conventional one-dimensional dispersion model in predicting natural mixing processes in open channels under low flow conditions through pools and riffles.

Cohesive sedimentation mechanism is affected by various physico-chemical factors. Thus, the field observations and the laboratory experiments for cohesive sediment have been reported for decades. Erosion and deposition test was carried out with cohesive sediment material sampled in the Keum River Estuary in this study. The change of the suspended cohesive sediment concentration was measured for various flow conditions, which have the purpose to determine the critical shear stress and the coefficients for erosion and deposition . The critical shear stress and the coefficient for erosion were determined in the flume test. The equilibrium concentration was determined for each shear stress and the relationship between the normalized equilibrium cocentration with the initial cocentration (Ceq/co) and the equivalent shear stress was obtained. The experimental results were compared with the other results and showed fairly well agreements with them.

Most landslides in the country are shallow failures triggered by intense rainfall. Many researchers have revealed the possibility of predicting shallow failure through the volumetric water content (VWC). This study examined how to determine shallow failure using the gradient characteristics of the volumetric water content. For this, flume experiments were conducted using weathered granite soil. To confirm the saturation state of the surface layer under a rainfall intensity of 30 and 50mm/hr, VWC sensors were installed at depths of 10 and 20 cm on the upper, middle and lower slope. The test results showed that a shallow failure determination using VWC could be applied limitedly according to the slope degree. In addition, the effective cumulative rainfall due to the rainfall infiltration velocity is considered the main factor for the failure time. The failure prediction using the gradient of the VWC depends on the installation location and depth of the sensor. According to the experimental data, the measured value at 20 cm below the slope was most effective. Therefore, an analysis method of VWC and the method of selecting the installation location confirmed through this study can provide important data for presenting the measurement criteria using VWC in the future.

In this paper, a numerical analysis for an internal turret moored vessel located at a 400-m water depth is conducted. The target vessel has an internal turret that is located at the 0.2 Lpp position from the fore-side, with $3{\times}4$ complex mooring lines installed around the turret circumference. To investigate the motion response of the vessel and the structural reliability of the lines, model tests were conducted. The KRISO ocean basin has a water depth of 3.2 m, which represents 192m using a scaling of 1:60. In order to precisely represent the real-scale condition, equivalent mooring lines needed to be designed. Truncated mooring lines were designed to supplement the restriction of the flume's water depth and increase the reliability of the model testing. These truncated mooring lines were composed of two different chains in order to match the pre-tension, simultaneously restoring the curve and variation in the effective line tension. The static similarities were compared using a static pull-out test and free decaying test, and the dynamic similarities were matched via a regular wave test and combined environments test. Consequently, the designed truncated mooring system could represent the prototype mooring system relatively well in the aspects of kinematics and dynamics.

In this study, in order to analyze the effect of cylindrical baffles on the debris flow energy, small-scale tests were conducted using a flume with cylindrical baffles. Various row numbers of installed baffles were considered as a test condition. To investigate the scale effect of debris flow and cylindrical baffles on flow characteristics, large-scale tests were also performed according to varying row numbers of baffle for same baffle configuration with small-scale tests. Both small- and large-scale test results showed that the increase of row number of baffle increase the energy dissipation effect due to reduction of the velocity and flow depth of debris flow.

A model test is performed to investigate the dynamic behavior of truss type lift gate which is being constructed by the four major rivers project. The gate dimensioned 40 m in width, 9m in height is scaled with the ratio of 1:25 and is made of acryl panel and supplemented weight by lead in the concrete test flume dimensioned 1.2 m in width, 0.5 m in height and 30m in length. Firstly natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and compared with the numerical results for the calibration. The amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening, upstream water level conditions. Also models with bottom angle $20^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ are tested and compared to find out a proper shape of bottom structure which minimizes the gate vibration. These test results presents a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management and a design method to reduce the gate vibration of truss type lift gate.

In this study, we proposed a new type of dual-buoy wave energy converter (WEC) exploiting multi-resonance and analyzed the experimental results from a model test in a 2-D wave flume. A dual-buoy WEC using multi-resonance has two advantages: high efficiency at the resonant frequencies and the potential to extend the frequency range available to extract wave power from the WEC. The suggested WEC was composed of an outer buoy and an inner buoy sliding vertically inside the outer buoy. As the power take-off device, a linear electric generator (LEG) consisting of permanent magnets and coils fixed at each buoy was adopted. Electricity was produced by the relative heave motion between the two buoys. To search for the optimal shape of a dual-buoy WEC, we conducted experiments on the heave motion of a two-body system in regular waves without an LEG installed. Model tests with six combinations of experimental models were conducted in order to find the motion characteristics of a dual-buoy WEC. It was found that model 2, which included a ring-shaped appendage to move the resonant frequency of the outer buoy toward a high value, showed a higher relative heave response amplitude operator (RAO) curve than model 1. In addition, the double-peak shape of the heave RAO curve shown for model 2 indicated the extension of the frequency range for extracting wave power in irregular waves.

In this study, to investigate the effect of cylindrical countermeasure on the flow characteristics of debris flow, a series of small-scale tests were conducted using a flume with cylindrical baffles. Various heights and row numbers of installed baffles were considered as a test condition. High speed cameras and laser level sensors were also installed at the top and side of the channel, respectively, to capture the debris flow dynamics before and after baffles. Based on test results, the energy dissipation of debris flow due to baffles was analyzed. Test results showed that baffles can significantly reduce the velocity and flow depth of debris flows. The energy dissipation effect of baffles also increase as the increase of height and row number of baffles.

The purpose of this study is to quantify the erosional parameters, such as the critical shear stress for erosion and the erosion rate coefficient for cohesive sediments from the Mokpo coast. Using Chonbuk annular flume, five erosion tests were conducted under the uniform bed condition but a different bed density respectively. Erosion test results for Mokpo sediments have shown increases in the range of $0.16{\sim}0.43\;N/m^2$ but decreases exponentially in the range of $272{\sim}4.64\;mg/cm^2{\cdot}hr$ for the given bed shear stress of $1.14{\sim}1.34\;g/cm^3$. The erosional parameters of Mokpo sediments are found to vary remarkably in quantity compared with those for cohesive sediments from other sites. On the whole, the value of Mokpo coast sediments appears to be similar to Kunsan sediments but smaller than Saemankeum and Okeechobee sediments. On the other hand, Mokpo sediments have been shown to be larger than Saemankeum and Okeechobee sediments but smaller than Kunsan sediments.

In this study, the hydrodynamic coefficients were measured using various nettings to analyze the change of drag coefficients and lift coefficients as a basic study for deriving hydrodynamic coefficients. The data on hydrodynamic force obtained from the flume tank tests were used to compare and analyze the hydrodynamic coefficients based on Reynolds number. Standardized hydrodynamic coefficients were then assumed during the analysis procedures. The hydrodynamic coefficients were measured using the 9 kinds of nettings in which had the same total projected area with different diameters and mesh-grouping ratio. These different netting systems : mesh-grouping ratio. The results of the test of nettings were as follows; First, the drag coefficients of nettings increased when the higher attack angles applied, and decreased with the increased flow speed and netting twine diameter. Second, the lift coefficients of nettings showed the increased values until the attack angle 30 degree, but decreased for the attack angle over 40 degree. Third, the hydrodynamic coefficients of netting decreased as the Reynolds number increased, and reach at slightly states in the highest numbers. Fourth, the hydrodynamic coefficients were derived from a functional formula considering attack angles and Reynolds number, and presented in the three dimensional space.
