  • This paper presents the spray characteristics of the simplex fuel nozzle with different working fluids for the gas turbine engine. Spray characteristics can be changed with viscosity, surface tension and density. In this research, water and test fluid type 2 which has similar characteristics of the kerosene are used as a working fluid. Spray visualization was performed by using ND-Yag laser and droplet size was measured by using PDPA(Phase doppler particle analyzer) system. The test results show that spray shapes and SMD distributions of two working fluids are similar at main spray region.

  • Y-junction microchannels are widely used as a flew mixer. Fluids are entered from two branch channels and merged together at a combined channel. In this study, we suggest a simple method to create the fluid digitization using flow instability phenomena. Two immiscible liquids (water/oil) are infused continuously to each Y-junction inlets. Because of the differences in fluid and flow properties at the interface, oil droplet is formed automatically followed by flow instability. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in oil droplet formation, a quantitative flow visualization study has performed. Highly resolved velocity vector fields are obtained by a micro-PIV technique, so that detail flow structures around the droplet are illustrated. In this study, fluorescent particles were mixed with water only for visualization of oil droplet and velocity field measurement in water flow.

  • A numerical investigation has been made for flows in an axisymmetric circular cylinder with a rotating cone located at the bottom of the container. The axisymmetric container is completely filled with a viscous fluid. Major parameter for the present research is the vertex angle of the cone, otherwise Reynolds number of fluid and aspect ratio of the vessel is fixed. Main interest is in vortex breakdown of meridional circulation by rotation of the cone with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. The method to this problem is numerically to integrate momentum and continuity equations on a generalized body fitted grid system. The pattern of vortex breakdown is quite different from that in a right circular cylinder with flat end wall disks. Flow visualization photographs of a preceeding work are compared with the present numerical results.

  • From surface flow visualization on a MIRA notchback reference model using oil flow technique, the topology of the singular points of the skin friction lines are delineated. Separation and reattachment lines at the front screen, at the A-pillar, at the C-pillar and on the rear side of the car including the trunk have been identified. It is worth to mention that two vortices emerging from the top of the trunk coil in the opposite direction as that vortices starting from the C-pillar edge. The positions of the singular points and the separation and reattachment lines and the foci of the vortices provide a sensitive database for validation of CFD-codes

  • An interfacial instability has recently been observed for the DC- and AC-powered electroosmotic flows of the two miscible electrolyte layers having different concentrations in microchannels. It is rather contrary to our common belief that the flow inside a microchannel is generally stable due to the dominant role of the viscous damping. In this work, we visualized the electroosmotic flow inside a T-channel to validate the numerical predictions. It is clearly shown that the strong vortices (which characterize the interface shapes) are generated at the interface of the two fluids, as was predicted in the numerical analysis.

  • As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are regarded as an unpleasant insect. However, there are novel phenomena that happen inside a mosquito. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking function of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mosquito's pumping mechanism in order to resolve the problem encountered when we inject or transport biologic fluids into a micro-chip. To analyze the pumping mechanism, we visualized the blood sucking process inside a female mosquito. Flow characteristics of blood flow in a proboscis were investigated experimentally using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. The anatomical variation of head, thorax, abdomen which work as pumps and valves, was visualized using the syncrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique.

  • In this study, a CFD code is developed to perform simulation of the surface and internal flow of a three-dimensional rectangular cavity driven by an external gas flow. Investigated in this study are surface characteristic such as surface tension, surface dilational viscosity(or surface elasticity), and surface viscosity. Visualization of the surface of water is performed to compare with the numerical results obtained with the developed in-house code. We have found that the surface flow is very sensitive to the surface tension and other configurations. The surface flow velocity obtained from the numerical solution is lower than the experimental result.

  • Electrical impedance(EIT) for the multi-phase flow visualization is an imaging modality in which the resistivity distribution of the unknown object is estimated based on the known sets of injected currents and measured voltages on the surface of the object. In this paper, an EIT reconstruction algorithm based on the extended Kalman filter(EKF) is proposed. The EIT reconstruction problem is formulated as a dynamic model which is composed of the state equation and the observation equation, and the unknown resistivity distribution is estimated recursively with the aid of the EKF. To verify the reconstruction performance of the proposed algorithm, experiments with simulated multi-phase flow are performed.

  • On-demand droplet generation with tunable droplet volume is fundamental in many droplet microfluidic applications. In this work, we propose an acoustofluidic method to produce water-in-oil droplets with prescribed volume in an on-demand manner. Surface acoustic waves produced from a slanted interdigital transducer are coupled with parallel laminar streams of dispersed and continuous phase fluids. Acoustic radiation force acting on the fluid interface enable generation of droplets in a microfluidic chip. We expect that the proposed acoustofluidic droplet generation method will serve as a promising tool for on-demand droplet generation with on-chip droplet volume control.

  • The purpose of present research was to get characteristics and basic knowledges of electrorheological(ER) suspension. To observe behaviors of the ER suspensions. transparent conductive plates were used to visualize the flow of ER suspensions between two parallel plate electrodes. The influence of flowing speed and intensity of electric field on the ER fluid were examined in circle-shaped electric field, and it takes several hundred milliseconds that suspensions in flow cluster. The present study also conducts a numerical analysis adopting the Bingham model. It is found that simple Bingham model can not property describe the flow behavior in the parallel plates.
