  • An efficient packed-bed type biofilm reactor charged with immobilized phototrophs was developed to treat organic wastewater at an extremely high volumetric loading rate. The packed bed reactor (PBR) charged with porous ceramic beads was superior to a fluidized-bed reactor suspended with activated carbon powders in terms of many aspects such as BOD removal efficiency, operational stability, and overall economics. For wastewater with BOD concentration as high as 20, 000mg/l, the BOD removal efficiency was maintained above 90% when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was longer than 1 day. The allowable volumetric BOD loading rate of this reactor (20gBOD/l day) is more than ten-folds higher than that of an ordinary activated sludge method. The behaviour of the reactor was represented well by a Monod type kinetic equation with a maximum specific BOD loading rate(P) of 22.2gBOD/l day and a half saturation constant(K$_{s}$) of 1, 750 mgBOD/l.

  • The performance of fluidized-bed reactor with Photomedia, immobilized TiO$_2$ onto the porous ceramic ball using a sol-gel method has been studied in this work. A simple model substrate, dilute Rhodamine B (RhB), was decolorized at room temperature. For the purpose of comparison, the slurry reactor and the Inner Wall Coated Reactor (IWCR) were used. The aim of this work was to develop the photocatalytic fluidized bed reactor (PFBR) through contrasting the photodegradability of various reactors such as the TiO$_2$slurry reactor, the inner-wall coated reactor (IWCR). In this study, the RhB was decolorized in three types of reactor. Even though the reaction rate constant of PFBR was lower than that of slurry reactor, PFBR had the advantages of preventing the wash-out of photocatalyst, so it can be operated continuously.

  • Effect of organic loading rate on digester performance was evaluated under the conditions of same surface area/reactor volume ratio and different reactor diameter. At the low loading rate of $0.4\;kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, high rate of organic removal could be obtained regardless of reactor diameter. It can be estimated that reactor configuration can not affect reactor performance at the low loading rate. However, different performance depending on reactor diameter was observed at the organic loading rate of $6\;kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}d$. That is, volatile acid accumulation and low COD removal efficiency was observed in reactor having 6.4 cm diameter, while volatile acid was not accumulated at all and high COD removal efficiency was observed in reactor having 3 cm diameter. Such a difference of reactor performance depending on reactor diameter can be explained that sludge bed can be fluidized by evolved gas bubble in narrow reactor while sludge bed can not be fluidized by evolved gas bubble only in wide reactor. At a high organic loading rate of $20\;kg\;COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, it can be judged that there is no relation between reactor configuration and reactor performance because all reactors showed very low COD removal efficiencies regardless of reactor diameter. Sludge bed fluidization is one of the most important factors in achieving efficient start-up of anaerobic digester. Narrow and tall type reactor is favorable condition for making sludge bed fluidization at a constant surface area/reactor volume ratio. Thus, it can be judged that reactor configuration and sludge bed fluidization have great influence to reactor performance.

  • To enhance the performance of SEWGS system by holding the WGS catalyst in a SEWGS reactor using bed inserts, effect of bed insert geometry on CO conversion of WGS catalyst was measured and investigated. Small scale fluidized bed reactor was used as experimental apparatus and tablet shaped WGS catalyst and sand particle were used as bed materials. The cylinder type and the spring type bed inserts were used to hold the WGS catalysts. The CO conversion of WGS catalyst with the change of steam/CO ratio was determined based on the exit gas analysis. Moreover, gas flow direction was confirmed by bed pressure drop measurement for each case. The measured CO conversion using the bed inserts showed high value comparable to previous results even though at low catalyst content. Most of input gas flowed through the bed center side when we charged tablet type catalyst into the cylinder type bed insert and this can cause low $CO_2$ capture efficiency because the possibility of contact between input gas and $CO_2$ absorbent is low in this case. However, the spring type bed insert showed good reactivity and good distribution of gas, and therefore, the spring type bed insert was selected as the best bed insert for SEWGS process.

  • Water toxicity monitoring based on the continuous cultivation of Photobacterium phorphoreum is presented. Normally, after 10 days of operation, a dark variant, which emits no light, appears and dominates the population, resulting in a rapid decrease in bioluminescence. Therefore, to overcome this problem, a fluidized-bed reactor is used in which alginate-immobilized cells are grown and leaking cells are continuously released into the effluent Experimental results revealed that the dominance of dark variants was suppressed inside the immobilized beads, thereby mitigating the rapid loss of bioluminescence. Plus, a high dilution rate (1.2 h$\^$-1/) prevented the occurrence of other microbial contamination in the reactor The concentration and bioluminescence of the released cells were sufficient to measure the water toxicity for more than 4 weeks.

  • Biomass had been attracted public attention as eco-friendly resource which not increases the greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide. In this study, it had been collected pyrolytic products such as bio-oil, char and pyrolytic gas from various biomass in a fluidized bed reactor which is one of the fast pyrolysis processes. To understand the characteristics of biomass pyrolysis, the variation of products yield and chemical composition was determined with various operating parameters like temperature, gas velocity($U_{0}/U_{mf}$) and bed height(L/D). In the optimum operating conditions, gas yield and water content was the lowest and concentration of guaiacols and syringols were the highest. The maximum yields of bio-oil was from 55% to 58% at $400^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate particle attrition characteristics in a gas desulfurization using zinc titanate sorbent in a 0.035 m i.d. by 1.34 m height gas fluidized bed reactor. Gas jetting from the distributor and bubbling in the gas fluidized bed were found to be the main causes of particle attrition. The experiment was carried out under a slow attrition rate condition to compare the performance of the batch reactor to that of a continuous reactor. The attrition index (AI) and corrected attrition index (CAI) were measured at various the gas velocity, temperature, pressure, and bed weight, in the gas fluidized bed, during the dexulfurization process. The AI (5) and CAI (5) decreased as the bed weight increased. Particle destruction occurred when the particles started to experience physical fatigue under specific impacts over several iterations. AI (5) and CAI (5) also increased as relative humidity, gas velocity and pressure increased, and as temperature decreased. Particle attrition was mainly affected by gas jetting from the distributor, and abrasion resulted in smaller particles than fragmentation did.
