  • A particle method recognized as one of the gridless methods has been developed to investigate the nonlinear free-surface motions interacting to the structures. The method is more feasible and effective than convectional grid methods for solving the non-linear free-surface motion with complicated boundary shapes. The right-handed side of the governing equations for incompressible fluid, which includes gradient, viscous and external force terms, can be replaced by the particle interaction models. In the present study, the developed method is applied to the dam-broken problem on dried- and wet-floor and its adequacy will be discussed by the comparison with the experimental results.

  • A polishing method using magnetorheological (MR) fluid has been developed as a new precision technique to obtain a fine surface. The process uses a MR fluid that consists of magnetic carbonyl iron (CI) particles, nonmagnetic polishing abrasives, water and stabilizers. But the CI particles in MR fluids cause a severe corrosion problem. When coated with Xanthan gum, the CI particles showed long-term stability in corrosive aqueous environment. The surface roughness obtained from the MR polishing process was evaluated. A series of experiments were performed on fused silica glass using prepared slurries and various process conditions, including different polishing times. Outstanding surface roughness of Ra=2.27nm was obtained on the fused silica glass. The present polishing method could be used to produce ultra-precision micro parts.

  • This study introduced a lattice Boltzmann computational scheme capable of modeling thermo hydrodynamic flows with simpler equilibrium particle distribution function compared with other models. The equilibrium particle distribution function is the local Maxwelian equilibrium function in this model, with all the constants uniquely determined. The characteristics of the proposed model is verified by calculation of the sound speeds, and the shock tube problem. In the lattice Boltzmann method, a thermal fluid or compressible fluid model simulates the reflection of a weak shock wave colliding with a sharp wedge having various angles $\theta$$\sub$w/. Theoretical results using LBM are satisfactory compared with the experimental result or the TVD.

  • The electrorheoloRical (ER) fluids are composed of a colloidal dispersion of polarizable particles in insulating oil, and it's the rheological property changes by the applied electric field. These changed are reversible and occur fast within a fewmilliseconds. The ER properties of the ER fluid such as increment of viscosity and yield stress come from the particle chain structure induced by electric fleld. When formulating the ER fluid for a speciflc application, some requirement must besatisfled, which are high yield stress under electric field, rapid response, and dispersion stability. While this characteristic makes valuable ER fluids in valious industrial applications, their lung term and quiescent application has been limited because ofproblems with particle sedimentation. In an effort to overcome sedimentation problem of ER fluids, the anhydrous ER materials of monodispersed hollow polyaniline (PANI) and adipate derivative respectively with submicron-sized suspension providing wide operating temperature range and other advantage were synthesized in a four-step procedure. The ER fluidswere characterized by FT-lR, TGA, DLS, SEM, and TEM. Stability of the suspensions was examined by an UV spectroscopy. The rheological and electrical properties of the suspension were investigated Couette-type rheometer with a high voltagegenerator, current density, and conductivity. And the behavior of ER suspensions was observed by a video camera attached toan optical microscope under 3kV/mm. The suspensions showed good ER properties, durability, and particle dispersion.

  • A Lagrangian approach based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate large and/or sharp deformations and fragmentations of interfaces, including free surfaces, through tracing each particle with physical quantities. According to the concept of the particle-based CFD method, it is possible to apply it to both fluid particles and solid particles such as sand, gravel, and rock. However, the presence of more than two different phases in the same domain can make it complicated to calculate the interaction between different phases. In order to solve multiphase problems, particle interaction models for multiphase problems, including surface tension, buoyancy-correction, and interface boundary condition models, were newly adopted into the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The newly developed MPS method was used to simulate a typical validation problem involving dam breaking. Because the soil and other particles, excluding the water, may have different viscosities, various viscosity coefficients were applied in the simulations for validation. The newly developed and validated MPS method was used to simulate the mobile beds induced by broken dam flows. The effects of the viscosity on soil particles were also investigated.

  • Particle-particle interaction is of great importance in the study of suspension rheology. In this research we have investigated the hydrodynamic interaction between two identical cylinders in viscoelastic fluids numerically as a model problem for the study of viscoelastic suspension. We confine two neutrally buoyant cylinders between two parallel plates and impose a shear flow. We determine the migration velocity of two cylinders. The result shows that cylinders move toward or away from each other depending upon the initial distance between them and that there is an equilibrium distance between two cylinders in viscoelastic fluids regardless of the initial distance. In the case of Newtonian fluid, there is no relative movement as expected. The results partly explain the chaining phenomena of spherical particles in shear flows of viscoelastic fluids.

  • We performed a numerical investigation to find out the optimal choice of the spatial discretization in the distributed-Lagrangian-multiplier/fictitious-domain (DLM/FD) method for the solid/fluid interaction problem. The elastic solid bar attached on the bottom in a pressure-driven channel flow of a Newtonian fluid was selected as a model problem. Our formulation is based on the scheme of Yu (2005) for the interaction between flexible bodies and fluid. A fixed regular rectangular discretization was applied for the description of solid and fluid domain by using the fictitious domain concept. The hydrodynamic interaction between solid and fluid was treated implicitly by the distributed Lagrangian multiplier method. Considering a simplified problem of the Stokes flow and the linearized elasticity, two numerical factors were investigated to clarify their effects and to find the optimum condition: the distribution of Lagrangian multipliers and the solid/fluid interfacial condition. The robustness of this method was verified through the mesh convergence and a pseudo-time step test. We found that the fluid stress in a fictitious solid domain can be neglected and that the Lagrangian multipliers are better to be applied on the entire solid domain. These results will be used to extend our study to systems of elastic particle in the Stokes flow, and of particles in the viscoelastic fluid.

  • A realistic numerical simulation technology using a Lagrangian Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model was combined with a fracture algorithm to predict the fluid-ice-structure interaction. The failure of ice was modeled as the tensile fracture of elastic material by applying a novel FSI model based on the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. To verify the developed fracture algorithm, a series of numerical simulations for 3-point bending tests with an ice beam were performed and compared with the experiments carried out in an ice room. For application of the developed FSI model, a dropping water droplet hitting a cantilever ice beam was simulated with and without the fracture algorithm. The simulation showed that the effects of fracture which can occur in the process of a FSI simulation can be studied.

  • A smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is applied for simulating two-dimensional free-surface problems. The SPH method based on the Lagrangian formulation provides realistic flow motions with violent surface deformation, fragmentation and reunification. In this study, the effect of computational parameters in SPH simulation is explored through two-dimensional dam-breaking and sloshing problem. The parameters to be considered are the speed of sound, the frequency of density re-initialization, the number of particle and smoothing length. Through a series of numerical test. detailed information was obtained about how SPH solution can be more stabilized and improved by adjusting computational parameters. Finally, some numerical simulations for various fluid flow problem were carried out based on the parameters chosen through the sensitivity study.
