The problem of sound radiation from infinite elastic beams under the action on harmonic moving line forces is studies. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the beam is taken into account. The beam is assumed to occupy the plane z=0 and to be axially infinite. The beam material and elastic foundation are assumed to be lossless and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory including a tension force (T), damping coefficient (C) and stiffness of foundation $(\kappa_s)$ will be employed. The non-dimensional sound power is derived through integration of the surface intensity distribution over the entire beam. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and the results examined as a function of Mach number (M), wavenumber ratio$(\gamma{)}$ and stiffness factor $(\Psi{)}$. Here, our purpose is to explain the response of sound power over a number of non-dimensional parameters describing tension, stiffness, damping and foundation stiffness.
Recently, it has been reported that the whipping response, which is the elastic phenomenon of the ship, may be one of the causes of the ship accident. Unfortunately, the commonly used methodology for evaluating the whipping effect effectively has not been developed yet. In this study, we developed a procedure to estimate the whipping effect of hull in actual design stage. Fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed for a dominant short term sea state to obtain the time series data of vertical wave bending moment including the whipping response by slamming. In order to estimate the whipping effect by using the time series, some signal processing and statistical techniques such as low pass filtering, Weibull fitting and so on, were applied. the hydro-elasticity analysis was performed on container ships of various sizes to evaluate the whipping effect. The parameters that can affect the response of the hull vibration was selected and the effect of these parameters on whipping was analyzed.
Fluid-elastic instability is believed to be a cause of the large-amplitude vibration and resulting rapid wear of heat exchanger tubes when the flow velocity exceeds a critical value. For sub-critical flow velocities, the random turbulence excitation is the main mechanism to be considered in predicting the long-term wear of steam generator tubes. Since flow-induced interactions of the tubes with tube supports in the sub-critical flow velocity can cause a localized tube wear, tube movement in the clearance between the tube and tube support as well as the normal contact force on the tubes by fluid should be maintained as low as possible. A simplified method is used for predicting fretting-wear damage of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes. The approach employed is based on the straight single-span tube analytical model proposed by Connors, the linear structural dynamic theory of Appendix N-1300 to ASME Section III and the Archard's equation for adhesive wear. Results from the presented method show a similar trend compared with the field data. This method can be utilized to predict the fretting-wear of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes in steam generators.
Shock wave reduction in electrorheological(ER) smart structures is studied. ER insert is a composite structure comprising two elastic outer layers between which is sandwiched layer of ER fluid. When a voltage is applied across the outer layers. the shear modulus and the loss factor of the ER fluid are enabled, and thus the dynamic properties of the composite structure is altered. For the shock wave reduction in a hull mount of a submerged structure, ER inserts are made on the hull mount structure. To investigate the ER insert shape. many types of ER insert pattern are considered. Modal test of ER insert structures is performed to obtain the mode shapes, natural frequencies and the acceleration transmissibility. The acceleration transmissibility is reduced at such a frequency region when an electric field is applied. It is observed that the natural frequencies and mode shapes can be tunable by applying electric field. The ER-inserted hull mount is installed in an integrated system and the overall performance of shock wave reduction is tested. The possibility of shock wave reduction in the hull mount is demonstrated.
Transient analysis for compressible fluid flow has been performed experimentally and analytically to study the dynamic characteristics of the end volume transmission lines following a sudden pressure change a its entrance. The numerical method was developed based on the method of characteristics. The sudden pressure at its entrance was generated by rupture of diaphragm in a shock tube. The sudden pressure was used to obtain the response, as input signal for the numerical analysis. The response to the sudden pressure at the end volume was measured using a pressure transducer. The experimental result shows good agreements with the numerical result. The effects of tube length, its diameter and end volume magnitude are evaluated on the responses of the pressure and on the damping factor. It is found that the viscous damping effects on the response through the transmission pipeline becomes larger with increasing pi;eline length and decreasing diameter of the pipe and the fluid-elastic stiffness decreases with increasing the terminal volume. The numerical approach presented in this paper can be very useful in designing the instrument and control system.
The major flow-induced vibration mechanisms such as fluid-elastic and turbulence excitation can cause the various types of wear of the steam generator tubes in unclear power plant. It is generally accepted that the tube wear due to vibration is affected by the presence of gap clearance between tube and support plate. Connors showed that the tube wear depth could be estimated by using the relationship between wear volume and sliding distance for contact time. Au-Yang predicted the wear depth by using the nonlinear characteristics of normal work rate to contact time. In this study the effect of gap size on the steam generator tubes wear is analyzed by deriving the wear depth versus normal work rate relationship from these previous results.
Recently, mega-float offshore structure is studied as one of the effective utilization of the ocean space. And mega-float structure are now being considered for various applications such as floating airports, offshore cities and so on. This mega-float structure is relatively flexible compared with real floating structures like large ships. when we estimate dynamic responses of these structures in waves, the elastic deformation is important, because vertical dimension is small compared with horizontal. The analysis of the dynamic response as it receives regular wave is studied. The finite element method is used in the analysis of structural section of this model. And the analysis is carried out using the boundary element method in the fluid division. In order to know the characteristics of the dynamic response of the mega-float structures, effects of wavelength, water depth, and wave direction on dynamic response of the floating structure are studied by use of numerical calculation.
A theoretical model has been studied to describe the sound radiation analysis for structural vibration noise control of tire under the action of random moving line forces. When a tire is analyzed, it has been modeled as a curved beam with distributed springs and dash-pots which represent the radial, tangential stiffness and damping of tire, respectively. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the curved beam is taken into account. The curved beam is assumed to occupy the plane y = 0 and to be axially infinite. The material of curved beam and elastic foundation are assumed to be lossless, and governed by the law of Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and its results examined as a function of Mach number(M), wavenumber ratio(.gamma.) and stiffness factor(.PSI.). The experimental investigation for structural vibration noise of tire under the action of random moving line forces has been made. Based on the STSF(Spatial Transformation of Sound Field) techniques, the sound power and sound radiation are measured. The experimental results show that operating condition, material properties and design factors of the tire have a great effect on the sound power and sound radiation characteristics.
A theoretical method is developed to analyze the free vibration of an elastic annular plate in contact with an ideal liquid. The displacement potential functions of the contained liquid are expressed as a combination of the Bessel functions that satisfy the Laplace equation and the liquid boundary conditions. The compatibility condition along the interface between the annular plate and the contained liquid is taken into account to consider the fluid-structure coupling. The dynamic displacement of the wet annular plate is assumed to be a combination of dry eigenfunctions, allowing for prediction of the natural frequencies using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The study investigates the effect of radial liquid boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of the wet annular plate, considering four types of liquid bounding: outer container bounded, outer and inner bounded, inner bounded, and radially unbounded. The proposed theoretical method is validated by comparing the predicted wet natural frequencies with those obtained from finite element analysis, showing excellent accuracy. The results indicate that the radial liquid bounding effect on the natural frequencies is negligible for the axisymmetric vibrational mode, but relatively significant for the mode with one nodal diameter (n =1) and no nodal circle (m' = 0). Furthermore, the study reveals that the wet natural frequencies are the largest for the plate with an inner bounded cylinder among the radial liquid boundary cases, regardless of the vibration mode.
