Dynamic analysis of complex and large structures may be costly from a numerical point of view. For coupled vibroacoustic finite element models, the importance of reducing the size becomes obvious because the fluid degrees of freedom must be added to the structural ones. In this paper, a component mode synthesis method is proposed for large vibroacoustic interaction problems. This method couples fluid subdomains and dynamical substructuring of Craig and Bampton type. The acoustic formulation is written in terms of the velocity potential, which implies several advantages: coupled algebraic systems remain symmetric, and a potential formulation allows a direct extension of Craig and Bampton's method to acoustics. Those properties make the proposed method easy to implement in an existing finite element code because the local numerical treatment of substructures and fluid subdomains is undifferentiated. Test cases are then presented for axisymmetric geometries. Numerical results tend to prove the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method.
Hydrodynamic behavior and response of vertical-cylindrical liquid-storage tank is considered. The equation of the liquid motion is shown by Laplace's differential equation with the fluid velocity potential. The solution of the Laplace's differential equation of the liquid motion is expressed with the modified Bessel functions. Only rigid tank is studied. The equivalent masses and heights for the tank contents are presented for engineering design model.
In this paper, a theoretical study is carried out on the hydroelastic vibration of a rectangular tank wall. It is assumed that the tank wall is clamped along the plate edges. The fluid velocity potential is used for the simulation of fluid domain and to obtain the added mass due to wall vibration. In addition, the vibration characteristics of stiffened wall of the rectangular tank are investigated. Assumed mode method is utilized to the stiffened plate model and hydrodynamic force is obtained by the proposed approach. The coupled natural frequencies are obtained from the relationship between kinetic energies of a wall including fluid and the potential energy of the wall. The theoretical result is compared with the three-dimensional finite element method and then added mass effect is discussed due to tank length and potential mode.
Recently, the ship vibration analysis technique has been well set up by using FEM. The methods considering the hydrodynamic added mass and damping of the fluid surrounding a floating ship have been well developed, so that they can be calculated by using the commercial package FEM programs such as MSC/NASTRAN, ADINA and ANSYS. Especially, MSC/NASTRAN has the functions to consider the fluid in tanks(MFLUID) and to solve the Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) problem(DMAP). In this study, the global ship vibration with considering the added mass distributed at the grid points on the wetted shell surface is introduced to. In the new method, the velocity potentials of the fluid surrounding a floating ship are calculated by solving the Lapalce equation using the Boundary Element Method(BEM), and the point mass is obtained by integrating the potentials at the points. Then, the global vibration analyses of the ship structure with distributed added mass on the wetted surface are carried out for an oil/chemical tanker. During the future sea trial, the results will be confirmed by measurement.
The transient nature and complex flow geometries of two-phase gas-liquid flows cause fundamental difficulties when measuring flow velocity using an electromagnetic flowmeter. Recently, a current-sensing flowmeter was introduced to obtain measurements with high temporal resolution (Ahn et $al.^{(1)}$). In this study, current-sensing flowmeter theory was applied to measure the fast velocity transients in slug flows. To do this, the velocity fields of axisymmetric gas-liquid slug flow in a vertical pipe were obtained using Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method and the virtual potential distributions for the electrodes of finite size were also computed using the finite volume method for the simulated slug flow. The output signal prediction for slug flow was carried out from the velocity and virtual potential (or weight function) fields. The flowmeter was numerically calibrated to obtain the cross-sectional liquid mean velocity at an electrode plane from the predicted output signal. Two calibration parameters are required for this procedure: a flow pattern coefficient and a localization parameter. The flow pattern coefficient was defined by the ratio of the liquid resistance between the electrodes for two-phase flow with respect to that for single-phase flow, and the localization parameter was introduced to avoid errors in the flowmeter readings caused by liquid acceleration or deceleration around the electrodes. These parameters were also calculated from the computed velocity and virtual potential fields. The results can be used to obtain the liquid mean velocity from the slug flow signal measured by a current-sensing flowmeter.

A wind energy assessment is an integrated analysis of the potential of wind energy resources of a particular area. In this work, the wind energy potentials for Mauritius have been assessed using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The approach employed in this work aims to enhance the assessment of wind energy potentials for the siting of large-scale wind farms in the island. Validation of the model is done by comparing simulated wind speed data to experimental ones measured at specific locations over the island. The local wind velocity resulting from the CFD simulations are used to compute the weighted-sum power density including annual directional inflow variations determined by wind roses. The model is used to generate contour maps of velocity and power, for Mauritius at a resolution of 500 m.
In this study, the conceptual design and performance evaluation of a personal air vehicle (PAV) is presented, which is a potential futuristic individual transportation. The blade element theory (BET) is employed to compute a rotational velocity. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is performed to investigate the difference in the thrust performance in the rotor axis distance of a quad-copter PAV in hovering. Modal analysis is performed to create a Campbell diagram to investigate critical speed. Consequently, a quad-copter PAV changes the aerodynamics thrust and critical velocity according to the rotor axis distance.
This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. The horizontal and rocking motions of the structure are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential functions, which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the deformed configuration of the structure as well as the sloshing behavior of the fluid. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and the frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary of the structure. The structure and the near-field soil medium are represented using the axisymmetric finite elements, while the far-field soil is modeled using dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structure embedded in ground as well as on ground, since it models both the soil medium and the structure directly. For the purpose of verification, earthquake response analyses are performed on several cases of liquid tanks on a rigid ground and on a homogeneous elastic half-space. Comparison of the present results with those by other methods shows good agreement. Finally, an application example of a reinforced concrete tank on a horizontally layered soil with a rigid bedrock is presented to demonstrate the importance of the soil-structure interaction effects in the seismic analysis for large liquid storage tanks.
