  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) are used to perform aerodynamics analysis and structure analysis. For the fluid-structure interaction analysis, each technology should be considered as well. The process of aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis can be applied to various integrated analyses from many research fields. In this study, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis is performed for the missile at high angle of attack condition through the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). For this purpose, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analyses procedure for the missile are established. The results of the integrated analysis are compared with rigid geometry of the missile and the effect of the deformation will be addressed.

  • Effect of visualization as a tool for the education of fluid dynamics is mainly discussed. Visualized images are much more understandable compared to the explanation using equations and texts. Several examples are presented to clarify this statement. Then, the software system for teaching fluid dynamics using the results by the numerical simulation is discussed. Two important issues on what is needed in the system are given. First, such systems should be capable of animating images. Second, such systems should be interactively used by students. Changing parameters, coefficients, equations, etc. themselves and watching the difference are important for them to understand the nature of physics underlying the equations. The teaching system with visualization is no doubt a good tool for introducing fluid dynamics.

  • With more and more high-rise building being constructed in recent decades, bluff body flow with high Reynolds number and large scale dimensions has become an important topic in theoretical researches and engineering applications. In view of mechanics, the key problems in such flow are high Reynolds number turbulence and fluid-solid interaction. Aiming at such problems, a parallel fluid-structure interaction method based on socket parallel architecture was established and combined with the methods and models of large eddy simulation developed by authors recently. The new method is validated by the full two-way FSI simulations of 1:375 CAARC building model with Re = 70000 and a full scale Taipei101 high-rise building with Re = 1e8, The results obtained show that the proposed method and models is potential to perform high-Reynolds number LES and high-efficiency two-way coupling between detailed fluid dynamics computing and solid structure dynamics computing so that the detailed wind induced responses for high-rise buildings can be resolved practically.

  • Using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation tool, we have offered a design guideline of a slot-die head having a simple T-shaped cavity through an analysis of the fluid dynamics in terms of cavity pressure and outlet velocity, which affect the uniformity of coated thin films. We have visualized the fluid flow with a transparent slot-die head where poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is injected. We have shown that the fluid dynamics inside the slot-die head depends sensitively on the cavity depth, cavity length, land length, and channel gap (i.e., shim thickness). Of those, the channel gap is the most critical parameter that determines the uniformity of the pressure and velocity distributions. A pressure drop inside the cavity is shown to be reduced with decreasing shim thickness. To quantify it, we have also calculated the coefficient of variation (CV). In accordance with Hagen-Poiseuille's laws and electron-hydraulic analogy, the CV value is decreased with increasing cavity depth, cavity length, and land length.

  • We investigate the slat noise generation mechanism by using large-eddy simulation (LES) and simple source modeling based on linearized Euler equations. An incompressible LES of an MD 30P30N three-element airfoil in the high-lift configuration is conducted at $Re_c=1.7{\times}10^6$. Using the total derivative of the hydrodynamic pressure (DP/Dt) acquired from the incompressible LES, representative noise sources in the slat cove region are characterized in terms of simple sources such as frequency-specific monopoles and dipoles. Acoustic radiation around the 30P30N multi-element airfoil is effectively computed using the Brinkman penalization method incorporated with the linearized Euler equation. The directivity pattern of $p^{\prime}_{rms}$ at $r=20c_{slat}$ in the multiple sources is closely compared to that obtained by the application of the LES/Ffowcs-Williams and Hawking's methods to the entire flow field. The power spectrum of p' at ${\theta}=290^{\circ}$ is in good agreement with the data reported in BANC-III, especially the broadband part of the spectrum with a decaying slope ${\propto}f^{-3}$.

  • This study focuses on the analysis of the results of computational fluid dynamics simulations of mist-chemical vapor deposition for the growth of an epitaxial wafer in power semiconductor technology using artificial intelligence techniques. The conventional approach of predicting the uniformity of the deposited layer using computational fluid dynamics and design of experimental takes considerable time. To overcome this, artificial intelligence method, which is widely used for optimization, automation, and prediction in various fields, was utilized to analyze the computational fluid dynamics simulation results. The computational fluid dynamics simulation results were analyzed using a supervised deep neural network model for regression analysis. The predicted results were evaluated quantitatively using Euclidean distance calculations. And the Bayesian optimization was used to derive the optimal condition, which results obtained through deep neural network training showed a discrepancy of approximately 4% when compared to the results obtained through computational fluid dynamics analysis. resulted in an increase of 146.2% compared to the previous computational fluid dynamics simulation results. These results are expected to have practical applications in various fields.

  • The study of bacterial flagellar swimming motion remains an interesting and challenging research subject in the fields of hydrodynamics and bio-locomotion. This swimming motion is characterized by very low Reynolds numbers, which is unique and time reversible. In particular, the effect of rotation of helical flagella of bacterium on swimming motion requires detailed multi-disciplinary analysis. Clear understanding of such swimming motion will not only be beneficial for biologists but also to engineers interested in developing nanorobots mimicking bacterial swimming. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a three dimensional single flagellated bacteria has been developed and the fluid flow around the flagellum is investigated. CFD-based modeling studies were conducted to find the variables that affect the forward thrust experienced by the swimming bacterium. It is found that the propulsive force increases with increase in rotational velocity of flagellum and viscosity of surrounding fluid. It is also deduced from the study that the forward force depends on the geometry of helical flagella (directly proportional to square of the helical radius and inversely proportional to pitch).

  • The one way fluid structure interaction analysis on advanced propeller blade for next generation turboprop aircraft. HS1 airfoil series are selected as a advanced propeller blade airfoil. Adkins method is used for aerodynamic design and performance analysis with respect to the design point. Adkins method is based on the vortex-blade element theory which design the propeller to satisfy the condition for minimum energy loss. propeller geometry is generated by varying chord length and pitch angle at design point. Blade sweep is designed based on the design mach number and target propulsion efficiency. The aerodynamic characteristics of the designed Advanced propeller were verified by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) and showed the enhanced performance than the conventional propeller. The skin-foam sandwich structural type is adopted for blade. The high stiffness, strength carbon/epoxy composite material is used for the skin and PMI(Polymethacrylimide) is used for the foam. Aerodynamic load is calculated by computational fluid dynamics. Linear static stress analysis is performed by finite element analysis code MSC.NASTRAN in order to investigate the structural safety. The result of structural analysis showed that the design has sufficient structural safety. It was concluded that structural safety assessment should incorporate the off-design points.
