Before we develop LVAFoam, a CFD software for launch vehicle analysis, we conducted a survey on other CFD softwares. We looked at in-house code and commercial CFD software of other countries that were used as a simulation of launch vehicle's combustor, turbopump and external flow. This research included in-house code solvers, developed by NASA, Mississippi State University, DLR, Bertin Technologies, CNES, CERFACS, and JAXA as well as commercial CFD software from FLUENT, CFX, Advance/FrontFlow/red, GASP, CRUNCH CFD, CFD-ACE+, FINETM/Turbo, STAR-CCM+. The simulation cases of launch vehicle analysis from each commercial softwares and introduction of the LVAFoam were presented.
This study was carried out for the purpose of determination of maintenance period and investigation of weak point due to freeze when the gas heater of KOGAS valve station Is not operated in winter season. 3-dimensional non-linear numerical simulation was conducted in order to predict the time and location which bath water in heater reaches to ice point. FLUENT V 5.0, commercial code, is used for thermal fluid flow analysis. We thought this was problem of heat conduction solving the energy equation and modeled gas heater by using the real geometry and scale for performing the 3-dimensional simulation. It was analyzed complex heat transfer phenomena considering convection due to air on surface, conduction in insulation material, natural convection of liquid in heater and heat loss through the pipe.

A numerical analysis of electrochemical reaction and dynamics of the fluid flow in the channels of a DMFC separator was carried out by using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) code fluent(ver.6.0). From the simulation work, many valuable informations were obtained in terms of distributions of velocity, pressure, temperature, concentration and current density over the flow field. And it was possible to optimize the flow field structure by using the simulation results. The simulation work using the Cm code was found very helpful in analysing the phenomena occurring in the fuel cell and optimizing the structures of electrodes and flow field.

Thermal and structural finite element analyses were performed for the turbopump turbine bladed disk model with shroud of a liquid rocket engine. The only 1/80 part model was analyzed which consists of 3D eight node isoparametric solid elements. The applied loading history consists of a startup condition with a thermal spike and a steady state. Heat transfer coefficient on the blade was predicted using the commercial Navier-Stokes solver, Fluent. Transient thermal responses during startup and steady states were calculated using a 3D finite element code developed. Maximum stress and shroud tip displacement under the influence of centrifugal and thermal loading were also determined.

An electromagnetic pump has been designed using Load Distribution Method and Equivalent Circuit Method, and installed in a liquid metal flow system. The relation between the driving power of he electromagnetic pump and the flow rate was proposed. Also, the flow velocity and flow rate has been calculated by treating the Lorentz force as a source term in the Navier-Stokes equation. The calculation results were analyzed and compared with data from a commercial Code, FLUENT. They agreed well with each other within an error of 5%.
The design parameter of the reactor vessel insulation for the Korea Standard Power Plant has been studied numerically. The heat loss from the reactor vessel through the insulation is analysed by using the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. Parametric study has been performed on the air gap width between the reactor vessel wall and the inner surface of the insulation, and on the insulation thickness. Also evaluated is the performance degradation due to the chimney effect caused by gaps between the panels during the installation of the insulation system. From the analysis results, the optimal air gap width and the optimal insulation thickness are obtained.

It is easier to view flow visualization by using a water tunnel rather than a smoke wind tunnel because of low speed at same Reynolds number. Using a water tunnel also produces more definite flow visualization by the use of various color dyes. The flow uniformity in test section is very significant for accuracy of the test because most flow experiments elicit results through the installation of a model in uniform flow. The purpose of small-size desktop-type water tunnel is not to produce quantitative measurements, but rather to give a visualization of the fluid flow phenomenon. However, uniformity in the test section affects the accuracy of the results. Accordingly, this research estimates uniformity in a water tunnel test section by using the commercially available CFD code FLUENT. Results of the CFD analysis show that the flow uniformity of the test section is good.
In the last decade, laser surface texturing (LST) has emerged as a viable option of surface engineering. Many problems related with mechanical components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals and piston rings, etc, LST result in significant improvement in load capacity, wear resistance and reduction in friction force. It is mainly experimentally reported the micro-dimpled bearing surfaces can reduce friction force, however, precise theoretical results are not presented until now. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code, FLUENT is used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a parallel thrust bearing having 3-dimensional micro-dimple. The results show that the pressure, velocity and density distributions are highly affected by the location and number of dimple. The numerical method and results can be use in design of optimum dimple characteristics, and further researches are required.

The high pressure hydrogen gas refueling system is required for fuel cell vehicle. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT is adopted to investigate the gas flow characteristics inside the check valve for various refueling and tank pressures. The results showed that the choking phenomena can occur for certain refueling pressures, therefore refueling processes should be divided by multiple stages. And a design method to prevent the seal departure problem which reported in CNG usages is required.
Flow distribution characteristics with varying inlet flow-rate in mega collector risers have been investigated, using commercial code FLUENT. The heat transfer in mega collector was not considered in this numerical study. Through the simulation, the following results were found. First, flow distribution characteristics in mega collector risers show the similar tendency in all cases. Secondly, with increased inlet flow-rate, flow distribution uniformity was getting worse.
