Experimental investigation of counter-rotating propellers is subject to multiple time and cost constraint because of additional design parameters unlike single propeller. Also, a lot of computing time and resources are required for numerical analysis due to consideration of the interference between the upper and lower propellers. In the present study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the hover performance of counter-rotating propellers by using actuator method which is considered to be time-efficient. The accuracy of the present numerical methods was validated by comparing the ANSYS Fluent which is commercial CFD code. The axial spacing and rotational speed were selected as the analysis variables, and the aerodynamic performance was obtained under various conditions. Based on the obtained results, the Figure of Merit (FM) of single propeller and counter-rotating propellers and a prediction factor which enables prediction of counter-rotating propeller performance using a single propeller were derived to evaluate availability of the actuator method.
This study suggests the prediction algorithm for transverse permeability, represented the flow resistance during the manufacturing process of composite, of unidirectional continuous fiber reinforced plastics. The cross-sectional shape of representative volume element (RVE) is considered to reflect fiber arrangement. The equivalent length is used as a factor to express the change of resin flow according to fiber arrangement. The permeability prediction algorithm is created by grafting the Electro-Hydraulic analogy and validity is confirmed. The code for permeability prediction was composed by means of MATLAB and Python, flow analysis was performed by using FLUENT. The algorithm was verified as the permeability results obtained through Algorithm and numerical analysis were almost identical to each other, and the calculation time was reduced around 1/450 compared to the numerical analysis.

Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the rudder since they play an important role in naval architecture fields. Although some values such as hydrodynamics forces can be measured easily in the towing tanks, it is difficult to obtain the detailed information of the flow fields such as pressure distribution, velocity distribution, vortex generation from experiments. In the present study, the effects of hydrodynamic coefficients and Reynolds number acting on the rudder were studied by using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). Ansys fluent, one of commercial CFD solvers, solves the Navier-Stokes equations and the k-epsilon turbulence model is selected for the viscous model to solve RANS equations. At first, drag coefficients and lift coefficient for different angle of attack are obtained by using a CFD commercial code for KCS rudder. Secondly, the 2-D lift coefficients and drag coefficients are compared with 3-D coefficients at the same conditions. Thirdly, the effects of Reynolds number on the hydrodynamic forces are investigated.

This study aimed for the scientific approach of Korean traditional house, so called Hanok, by analyses of structural elements and thermal environmental performance. Hanok is a very unique vernacular architectural style of the Middle East Asia that fits with climate conditions of the Korean Peninsular, designed to withstand high temperature and humidity in summer and cold and dry in winter seasons. In order to evaluate thermal environment of Hanok, its sectional structure such as floor, wall, roof structure and Ondol which is Korean traditional floor heating system, was built in 3D, as well as heat transfer mechanism of its composing elements was analyzed through 3 dimensional steady state analysis. The results of the thermal environmental performance of Hanok will be used as a basic datum of design guidelines for accomplishing ecologic housing fitted with local climate.

A hull-form for a 32,000G/T class Ro-Pax ferry has developed in accordance with a need of ferry operators to reduce fuel oil consumption(FOC) due to the drastic increase in oil prices recently and strengthening of environmental rules and regulations such as CO2 emission. A twin-skeg type is applied as the hull-form in lieu of an open-shaft type in order to improve propulsion performance. In order to achieve this object, flow control devices are installed to reduce a propeller induced vibration which is a main reason to obstruct the application of twin-skeg type passenger vessels owing to an uncomfortable vibration level. Numerical simulation by using an in-house code and a commercial code (Fluent) has performed to find out an optimum design of the flow control devices and to check an improvement in cavity volume. Model tests in Samsung Ship Model Basin are carried out to evaluate propulsion performance with the developed twin-skeg type hull and a reference hull of open-shaft type. In conclusion, it is shown that the twin-skeg type hull is better than the open-shaft in FOC by around 7% and in cavity volume by 20% as well.

This study focuses on the investigation of the effects of windspeed and particle size on the dust control characteristics inside a test dome built in the Port of Inchon to reduce the fugitive dust originating from the handling of animal feed stuff in the open pile area. The flow field inside the test dome and the trajectories of the particles were calculated using a commercial CFD code, FLUENT, assuming that the animal feed stuff handling activity took place inside the test dome. It was found from the simulation results that high windspeed and small particle size give rise to the increase in both the escaped fraction and the suspended fraction of the particles emitted from the animal feed stuff handing activity. Here, high escaped fraction represents the high possibility of fugitive dust problem outside the test dome, whereas high suspended fraction means the high possibility of severe dust pollution inside the test dome. Ore simulation results clearly show that the existing test dome was not designed properly to meet the proposed goal, low escaped fraction and low suspended fraction. Hence, we suggest the need of an efficient ventilation system inside the dome to control the dust.
Because thermal non-uniformity of transported agricultural products is mainly affected by cooling air flow pattern in the cold transport equipment, the analysis and control of flowfield is key to optimization of cold transport equipment. The objectives of this study were to estimate the effects of geometric and operating parameters of cold container on the air flow and heat transfer, and find the optimum design parameters for the low temperature level and its uniformity in given cold container with CFD simulations. Existences of ducts, gaps between pallets and geometries of exit as geometric parameters and fan blowing velocity as operating parameter were investigated. CFD simulations were carried out with the FLUENT 6.2 code. The result showed that optimum design condition was bulk loading with no duct, wall exit and 8.0 m/s of fan blowing velocity.

Flow distribution of fuel nozzles for a combustor in a micro gas turbine is numerically investigated. The fuel supply system for the present study has 12 single nozzles with a diameter of several hundred micrometers. A uniform temperature distribution of a combustor outlet should be achieved for maximizing the lives of the turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes. For this, it is very important to uniformly supply fuel to a combustor. In order to investigate flow distributions of fuel nozzles, numerical models for fuel nozzles are made and solved by a commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. An effect of a fuel nozzle diameter and fuel flow rates on flow distribution of fuel nozzles is numerically investigated. As a result, non-uniformity is increasing as a diameter of a single fuel nozzle increases. Finally, an appropriate diameter of a single fuel nozzle is suggested.

To date, the demand for Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) has been continuously increased to overcome the problem of air pollution and lack of energy. In particular, the underground CCPP is exposed to substantial fire and explosion risks induced by gas leakage. The present study conducted numerical simulations to examine the fire behavior and gas leakage characteristics for a restricted region including gas turbine and other components used in a typical CCPP system. The commercial code of FLUENT V.14 was used for simulation. From the results, it was found that flammable limit distribution of leakage gas affects fire behavior. Especially, the flame is propagated in an instant in restricted region with LNG gas. In addition, consequence analysis factors such as critical temperature and radiation heat flux are introduced. These results would be useful in making the safety guidelines for the underground CCPP.
The objective of this study is to provide the quantitative and qualitative computational data about the aerodynamic performance of Gurney flap on NACA 00XX airfoils and to show the optimum Gurney flap height for each airfoil. The test was performed on 7 different airfoils from NACA 0006 to NACA0024, which have a 3% chord(=c) thickness interval. For every NACA 00XX airfoil, Gurney flap heights were changed by 0.5% or 0.25% chord interval from 0 to 2.0%c to study their effects. The aerodynamic characteristics of clean and Gurney flap airfoil were compared, and the influences of Gurney flap on each airfoil were compared. As a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) solver, FLUENT, based on Navier-Stokes code, was used to calculate the flow field around the airfoil. The fully-turbulent results were obtained using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The test results showed that Gurney flap increased the lift coefficient much more than the drag coefficient over a certain range of the lift coefficient, so the lift-to-drag ratio, which is the important index of airfoil performance, was increased. Based on the test results, the relationship between the airfoil thickness and the optimum Gurney flap heights was suggested.
