Volatile flavor components in chestnut (Castanea crenate Sieb. et Zucc.) flower were collected by SDE method using the mixture of n-pentane and diethylether as an extract solvent and were identified by GC-FID and GC/MS. A total of 122 components including 35 alcohols,5 hydrocarbons,20 terpene and derivatives,7 ketones, 24 aldehydes, 12 esters, 4 acids, 3 furans, and 2 miscellaneous were identified from total volatile extract of chestnut. Alcohols were comprise 36.58% of volatile extract and dominant constituents and the main components of flower volatiles were 1-phenylethanol (18.6%), (E)-geraniol, tricosane, heneicosane, benzyl alcohol, acetophenone and 2-phenylethanol as aromatic alcohols and odd carbon hydrocarbons. Especially 1-phenylethanol and acetophenone would be applicable to the markers to ascertain floral origin of chestnut honey. The powerful animal and floral notes of chestnut flower were characterized by compounds including nonanal.
In this study, we investigated the antibacterial, antioxidant, and whitening effects of Prunus persica Batsch var. davidiana Max. (Feral Peach) and Prunus mume (white and pink) flowers. The extracts of the three kinds of flowers showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus. aureus. The chloroform fractions of the white Prunus mume, Feral Peach, and pink Prunus mume flowers exhibited antibacterial activities of 84, 49, and 30%, respectively, against Staphylococcus. aureus at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. The flower extracts of the three species also exhibited antibacterial effects against Pseudomonas. aeruginosa. The chloroform fractions of the Feral Peach and pink Prunus meme flowers exhibited antibacterial activities of 36 and 30%, respectively, at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. These extracts did not exhibit any significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus. epidermidis and Escherichia. coli. The extracts of the three kinds of flowers did not significantly affect the survival of HaCaT cells. The distilled water fraction of the pink Prunus mume flower extract exhibited antioxidant effects at concentrations of both 20 and 40 ㎍/mL. The ethyl acetate fraction of the pink Prunus mume flower extract exhibited an antioxidant activity superior to glutathione at a concentration of 40 ㎍/mL. The flower extracts did not significantly affect the survival rate of B16F10 cells. The chloroform fraction of the Feral Peach flower exhibited a whitening effect of 18% at a concentration of 40 ㎍/mL. Based on these results, we conclude that the three kinds of flower extracts are raw materials exhibiting antibacterial, antioxidant, and whitening effects.

Abeliophyllum distichum is a medicinal plant used in regional traditional medicine to relieve pain in inflammatory processes. In this study, anti-inflammatory effects of Abeliophyllum distichum stem (ADS) ethyl acetate extract were examined. Furthermore, possible molecular mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory effects were dissected. The anti-inflammatory activity was investigated by inhibition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced pro-inflammatory cytokine production in murine macrophage-like cell line Raw264.7 cells and human microglial cell line BV2 cells. The measurement of the induced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels were carried out by ELISA. The phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and MAPK, and the nuclear expression of nuclear factor $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65 were investigated by Western blot analysis. The extract of ADS significantly decreased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. In addition, the extract suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and p38 MAPK, and the nuclear translocation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65 in activated cells. Our findings provide evidence for the popular use of Abeliophylli distichum in inflammation around Goesan region and also suggest that the stem extract has potential therapeutic benefits against several inflammatory diseases.

In this study, the antibacterial activity, antioxidative effects, inhibitory effects on tyrosinase of Inula britannica flower extracts were investigated. MIC values of ethyl acetate fraction from Inula britannica flower on P. acnes 0.25 %, respectively. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of the ethyl acetate fraction was the highest in the P. acnes. The free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activities ($FSC_{50}$) of ethyl acetate fraction of Inula britannica flower was $8.55{\mu}g$/mL. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities ($OSC_{50}$) of some fInula britannica flower extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}$- EDTA/$H_2O_2$ system were investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The order of ROS scavenging activities were ethyl acetate fraction $0.24{\mu}g$/mL. Ethyl acetate fraction showed the most prominent ROS scavenging activity. The protective effects of extract/fractions of Inula britannica flower on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The Inula britannica flower extracts suppressed photohemolysis in a concentration dependent manner ($5{\sim}100{\mu}g$/mL), particularly deglycosylated flavonoid aglycone fraction exhibited the most prominent celluar protective effect ($\tau_{50}$, 164.15 min at $25{\mu}g$/mL). The inhibitory effect of Inula britannica flower extracts on tyrosinase was investigated to assess their whitening efficacy. Inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) on tyrosinase of some Inula britannica flower extracts were high. Ethyl acetate fraction has $IC_{50}$ of $87.03{\mu}g$/mL. These results indicate that extract/fractions of Inula britannica flower can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protect cellular membranes against ROS. And inhibitory activity on tyrosinase of the ethyl acetate fraction and high potential as bactericide against the skin pathogenic bacteria could be applicable to new functional cosmetics for antioxidant, antiaging, antibacterial activity.
The purpose of this study is to develop a new preparation process of ginseng (Panax ginseng) flower buds extracts featuring high concentration of ginsenosides Rg2, Rg3, Rg5, F4 and Rh1, red ginseng special components. Chemical transformation from ginseng saponin glycosides to prosapogenin was analyzed by the HPLC. Extracts of ginseng flower buds were processed under several treatment conditions of ultrasonication (at $100^{\circ}C$). The results showed that the quantity of ginsenoside Rg6 increased by over 8.8% at the 16 hours of ultrasonication. Ginseng flower buds ethanol extract compared with other process times. The result of UGF-16 indicates that the ultrasonication processed ginseng flower buds extracts (at $100^{\circ}C$) treated for 16 hours produced the highest amount of ginsenoside F4 (8.833%), Rg3 (2.230%), Rg5 (2.339%) and Rg2 (1.002%).
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the biological activities of methanol extracts of fermented Camellia japonica leaf and flower. Methods : Methanol extracts of fermented Camellia japonica leaf and flower were prepared and a dose of 100 and 400mg/kg/day was administered orally into mice. And after appropriate weeks, changes of serum enzyme activities were investigated to confirm its effects on serum glucose, cholesterol and short term administration safety. Results : Fermented flower extract showed significant decrease of serum level of cholesterol. And showed no toxicity on kidney and liver within the dose of 400mg/kg/day. Conclusion : Thus above result showed no toxicity on kidney and liver in male and female mice.
After preparation of acetone, ethanol, methanol, and water extracts (10 g/300 mL) of dried persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv. Fuyu) flower-buds, total phenolic contents (TPC), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (RSA), 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) RSA, reducing power (RP), and tyrosinase inhibitory activity of the extracts were evaluated. The methanol extracts produced the highest TPC (113.39 mg gallic acid equivalents/g), DPPH RSA ($IC_{50}=40.25\;{\mu}g/mL$), ABTS RSA ($IC_{50}=58.17\;{\mu}g/mL$) and RP ($IC_{50}=69.43\;{\mu}g/mL$) activities while the water extracts generated the lowest values. The ethanol extract showed the highest tyrosinase inhibitor activity (88.90%) at a concentration of 1 mg/mL. These results indicated that persimmon flower-buds may be a useful source of natural antioxidants.

This study was to evaluate the effect of isopropyl alcohol fraction of ultrasonication processed ginseng flower buds(GFB-IF) on the collagen synthesis activity and inhibition of MMP-1 suppression in UV-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts. The higher contents of ginsenoside Rg2(8.234%), Rh1(5.749%), F4(3.881%) in isopropyl alcohol fraction of ginseng flower buds obtained by ultrasonication process at 600W(100℃) for 16 hours. GFB-IF had collagen synthesis effect. GFB-IF induced a significant dose-dependent decrease in the expression for MMP-1 protein. These results suggest that GFB-IF is a potential candidate for the prevention and treatment of wrinkle improving.
This research has been undertaken to increase availiability of native Camellia japonica leaf and flower in Korea as a edible-medicinal resource. Chemical compositions, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in different parts of camellia were investigated. Crude protein contained the highest in young leaves(14.22%) but less than 10% in different parts. The contents of crude fat and crude ash were 60.48% in seeds and 5.16% in mature leaves, respectively. Methanol extract of young leaf, flower, and flower bud in camellia showed strong antioxidant activity compared with different parts. Also, antioxidant activity of these was higher than that of BHT, but weaker than that of VtC. Antioxidant activity of various parts in camellia were in order of young leaf > flower bud > flower > mature leaf > stem > bark. Extracts of mature leaf and bark had a remarkable antibacterial activity(0 CFU/$m\ell$) on Bacillus subtilis. The young leaf extract displayed effective growth inhibition against B. subtilis, Candida albicans, and Trichosporon beigelii.

This study is to propose Lagerstroemia indica flower as an anti-acne cosmetic material, and confirmed the sebum control, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects using Lagerstroemia indica flower extract (LIFE) . As a result of evaluating the sebum control effectiveness, it was confirmed that LIFE inhibited the production of sebum excessively induced with palmitic acid up to 65%. Subsequently, it was confirmed that LIFE has an antibacterial effect and the ability to inhibit lipase activity against Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), which mainly appears in acne lesions, and can also reduce the inflammatory response caused by virulence factors secreted by C. acnes. It was also confirmed that LIFE inhibited the secretion of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which are inflammatory mediators induced by LPS in macrophages, by 75% and 54%, respectively, and that it also had a high DPPH radical scavenging ability similar to that of ascorbic acid. These results suggest that LIFE, a natural extract, can be used as an anti-acne material to relieve and treat acne, a complex disease, by controlling sebum production and having antibacterial and lipase activity inhibiting against C. acnes, and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties.
