  • The recent climate change and urbanization have seen an increase in runoff and pollutant loads, and consequently significant negative water pollution. The characteristics of the pollutant loads vary among the different flow regime depending on their source and transport mechanism, However, pollutant load reduction based on flow regime perspectives has not been investigated thoroughly. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the effects of concentration on pollutant load characteristics and reductions from each flow regime to develop efficient pollution management. As non-point pollutants continuously increase due to the increase in impervious area, efficient management is necessary. Therefore, in this study, 1) the characteristics of pollutant sources were analyzed at the Dalcheon Basin, 2) reduction of nonpoint pollution, and 3) reduction efficiency for flow regimes were analyzed. By analyzing the characteristics of the Dalcheon Basin, a reduction efficiency scenario for each pollutant source was constructed. The efficiency analysis showed 0.06% to 5.62% for the living scenario, 0.09 to 24.62% for the livestock scenario, 0.17% to 12.81% for the industry scenario, 9.45% to 38.45% for the land scenario, and 9.8% to 39.2% for the composite scenario. Therefore, various pollution reduction scenarios, taking into account the characteristics of pollutants and flow regime characteristics, can contribute to the development of efficient measurements to improve water quality at various flow regime perspectives in the Dalcheon Basin.

  • Flow characteristics inside a 10 inch ball valve have been analyzed using three-dimensional numerical analysis and experiments. Continuity and three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been used as governing equations for the numerical analysis. The numerical model has been constructed through the grid dependency test and validation with the results of experiments to ensure reliability and numerical effectiveness. The shear stress transport (SST) model has been used as the turbulence closure. The experimental test-rig has been constructed to measure pressure, temperature and flow rate along the pipeline. Some valve opening angles have been tested to evaluate the flow characteristics inside the ball valve and pipeline. The results show that the rapid pressure variations is observed while the valve opening angle decreases, which caused by flow separation at the downstream of the ball valve.

  • The axisymmetric Navier-Stokes model together with detailed chemical kinetics and variable transport properties has been applied to analyze the effects of the multidimensional flow on the flame characteristics in the nitrogen-diluted hydrogen counterflow nonpremixed flame. Computations are performed for two nozzle exit area-averaged velocities. Effects of multidimensional flow and strain rate on the near-extinction structure of the highly diluted hydrogen flames are discussed in detail.

  • The transient incompressible flow behind the axisymmetric bluff body is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). Based on the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, the Lagrangian approach with a stochastic simulation of diffusion using random walk technique is employed to account for the transport processes of the vortex elements. The numerical solutions for 2-dimensional recirculating flow behind a backward-facing step in the laminar range of Reynolds number are compared with experimental data. The present simulation focuses on the transitional flow regime where the recirculation zone behind the bluff body becomes highly unsteady and large-scale vortex eddies are shed from the bluff body wake due to intrinsic shear layer instabilities. The unsteady vertical flow structures and the mixing characteristics behind the bluff body are discussed in detail.

  • The three-dimensional numerical analysis for in-cylinder flow of four-valve engine without intake port has been successfully computed. These computations have been performed using technique of the general coordinate transformation based on the finite-volume method and body-fitted non-orthogenal grids using staggered control volume and covariant variable as dependent one. Computations are started at intake valve opening and are carried through top-dead-center of compression. A k-$\varepsilon$model is used to represent turbulent transport of momentum. The principal study is the evolution of interaction between mean flow and turbulence and of the role of swirl and tumble in generating near TDC turbulence. Results for three different inlet flow configuration are presented. From these results, complex flow pattern may be effective for promoting combustion in spark-ignition engines and kinetic energy of mean flow near TDC is well converted into turbulent kinetic energy.

  • This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.

  • The phenomena of drag reduction using small quantities of a liner macromolecules has attracted the attention of many experimental investigations. On the other hand drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to flow with cavitation which occurs pump impellers. But the research on dragreduction in two phase flow is not sufficient. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, void fraction, mean liquid velocity and turbulent intensity whether polymer additives a horizontal single and two phase system or not. Flow pattern of air-water two phase flow was classified by electrical conductivity probe signal. Velocities and turbulent intensities of signal were measured simultaneously with a Hot-film anemometer.

  • In this paper, flow characteristics of an adiabatic capillary tube in a transcritical $CO_2$ have been investigated employing the homogeneous model. The model is based on fundamental equations of mass, energy and momentum which are solved simultaneously. Two friction factors(Churchill) and viscosity(McAdams) are comparatively used to investigate the flow characteristics. Supercritical and subcritical thermodynamic and transport properties of $CO_2$ are calculated employing EES property code. Flow characteristics analysis of $CO_2$ adiabatic capillary tube is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters. The operating parameters considered in this study include inlet temperature and pressure of an adiabatic capillary tube, evaporating temperature and inner diameter tube. The main results were summarized as follows : inlet temperature and pressure of an adiabatic capillary tube, evaporating temperature, mass flowrate and inner diameter of $CO_2$ adiabatic capillary tube have an effect on length of an adiabatic capillary tube.

  • The temporal and spatial variations of water quality in a stratified reservoir are fully dependent on the characteristics of inflow loading from its watershed and the transport regimes of pollutants after entering the reservoir. Because of the meteorological and hydrological conditions in Korea, the pollutants loading to reservoirs are mostly occur during rainfall events. Therefore it is important to understand the characteristics of pollutants loading from upstream rivers and their spatial propagation through the stratified reservoir during the rainfall events. The objectives of this study were to characterize the water quality variations in upstream rivers of Imha Reservoir during a rainfall event, and the transport and spatial variations of pollutants in the reservoir through extensive field monitoring and laboratory analysis. The results showed that the event mean concentration (EMC) of SS, BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, T-P, $PO_4-P$ are 8.6 ~ 362.1, 2.5 ~ 5.1, 1.5 ~ 5.1, 1.1 ~ 1.9, 8.3 ~ 57.1, 5.6 ~ 25.7 times greater than the mean concentrations of these parameters during non-rainfall period. The turbidity and SS data showed good linear correlations, but the relationships between flow and SS showed large variations because of hysteresis effect during rising and falling periods of the flood. The ratio of POC to TOC were 12.6 ~ 14.7% during the non-rainfall periods, but increased up to 28.2 ~ 41.7% during the flood event. The turbid flood flow formed underflow and interflow after entering the reservoir, and delivered a great amount of non-point pollutants such as labile and refractory organic matters and nutrients to the metalimnion layer of reservoir, which is just above the thermocline. Spatially, the lateral variations of most water quality parameters were marginal but the vertical variations were significant.
