  • Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stoke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air may be made to flow inter-mittently through a pipe. In this paper an exhaust system simulator of engine was used to experi-mentally analyze the decrease in flow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables other than rotational speed give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.

  • In this paper, we propose useful load flow algorithms called FEDL (fast enhanced decoupled load flow). The proposed load flow method can improve the convergence characteristics particularly when the P-Q coupling becomes significant and the power system operating states deviate from the conditions required for stable convergence of the FDL by reflecting in part the effects of the off-diagonal terms in the Jacobian. In our test with IEEE AEP-30 bus system and RTS-96 73-bus system, it converge even when the fast decoupled load flow (FDL) and its variations keeping load flow matrices constant experience convergence problems. Test results show promising performances of the proposed algorithms in their convergence characteristics both in number of iterations and overall convergence speeds.

  • The MPI engine becomes increasingly popular because it meets two requirements of stringent pollutant emission and the lower fuel consumption. Even though supplies the same amount of fuel to each cylinder , it is hard to precisely control the air-duel ration due to the different amount of air flowing into each cylinder. The uniformity of air-fuel ration in each cylinder is considerably affected by the plenum chamber configuration . This study is focused on experimentally analyzing the flow characteristics within the plenum chamber In the present experiment , steady and valve dynamic state flow tests are performed and the flow field inside the plenum chamber is visualized and measured by utilizing a laser sheet visualization technique and a PTV method. These measured results indicate that the flow structure in the plenum chamber is highly influenced by the plenum chamber configurations, suction flow rates, crank speeds and so on.

  • The present study has tested semi-empirical loss models for a reliable performance prediction of mixed-flow pumps with four different specific speeds. In order to improve the predictive capabilities, this paper recommends a new internal loss model and a modified parasitic loss model. The prediction method presented here is also compared with that based on two-dimensional cascade theory. Predicted performance curves by the proposed set of loss models agree fairly well with experimental data for a variety of mixed-flow pumps in the normal operating range, but further studies considering 'droop-like' head performance characteristic due to flow reversal in mixed-flow impellers at low flow range near shut-off head are needed.

  • This paper presents two flexible alternatives to the decoupled load flow(DCL) method. The proposed load flow methods can improve the convergence profiles of the DCL by reflecting in part the effects of the off-diagonal terms in the Jacobian at minimal costs. They can improve the convergence characteristics especially when the power system operating states deviate from the conditions required for stable convergence of the DCL and the P-Q coupling becomes significant. Two algorithms are obtained from the expression of the full Newton-Raphson load flow (NRL) method by successively diminishing the effects of the off-diagonal submatrices in the Jacobian. In the process of simplification, the Neuman series expansion is utilized. Test results show promising performances of the proposed algorithms in their convergence characteristics both in number of iterations and overall convergence speeds. Proposed algorithms are expected to provide flexible alternatives to the NRL when the DCL experiences convergence problems.

  • This study is aimed to develop a new type of micro cross-flow hydro turbine which has very simple structure and relatively high efficiency. Micro eco cross-flow hydro turbine (ECFT) is proposed to apply in the ranges of very low and middle specific speeds in order to extend the operational range of the turbine. In order to not only obtain a basic data for a new design method of ECFT but also improve the turbine efficiency, experiments and CFD analysis on the performance and internal flow characteristics of the turbine model are conducted. According to the present study results, anti-recirculation block (ARB) and relatively wide turbine width with high flow rate improve the turbine efficiency.

  • The aerodynamic performance of axial flow fans for outdoor unit of air-conditioner is investigated by numerical and experimental approaches in this study. The pressure drop and volumetric flow rate are compared each other in several different conditions and fan speeds. It is shown that the predicted fan performances are quite well matched with the experimental results. It is also shown that the curvature of the fan arc and hub height have significant influences on the flow distribution after hub. By the results of this study, it can be suggested that several ways to improve the aerodynamic performance of the axial flow fan can be found using the numerical analysis.

  • A screw-type centrifugal pump was manufactured to carry solids primarily and its impeller has a wide flow passage. However, the effect of flow passage shape on delay of the choke due to entrained air has not been clarified yet. Moreover, because its impeller has a particular shape, only few studies have tried to clarify the pump performance and details of internal flow pattern of that pump. For that reason, we carried out the pump performance experiment under air-water two-phase flow condition with different impeller tip clearances, pump rotational speeds and void fractions by using a small screw-type centrifugal pump designed to acquire basic data. In a general centrifugal pump, it was reported that loss of pump head from single-phase flow to the choke due to air entrainment new the best efficiency point was large. However, the loss near the best efficient point in a screw-type centrifugal pump became less than that in a general centrifugal pump.

  • The Purpose of this Paper was to study the relationship between the change of operating speeds and the accidents on horizontal curves. For this purpose, we divided a horizontal curve section into two parts, a tangent section and a curve section, to estimate the operating speed for each vehicle. For studying relationship between the change of speed and geometric effect, the free-flow speed was used. The location and speed for the lowest speed were studied. Also, we analyzed the relationship between the change of operating speeds and the accidents. The followings are resulted in this study. First, drivers tend to reduce speeds significantly before they reach a curve. And the lowest speed was recorded at the downstream of the Point of curve (PC) due to the limited sight-distance of drivers on curve. Second, the larger the change of operating speeds become, the greater frequency of accident was recorded. These results can be used for developing the safety index on highways to check the design consistency.

  • Variations of performance and NPSH of a turbo pump inducer were measured. The flows at the inlet and the outlet of the inducer were also experimentally investigated by measuring flow velocity and angle using a 3-hole Pilot tube. Performance and velocity profiles show a similarity for tested speeds, however not for efficiencies. Strong recirculating flows appears at the inlet of inducer even at the design condition. Cavitating flows were also visualized at several NPSH's.
