  • Flow control butterfly valve(FCBV) is known to have difficulty in controlling flow rate along valve opening due to its high flow rate. In low opening condition, the butterfly valve also has some shortcomings such as noise, vibration and erosion which are mostly caused by cavitation effects. Therefore, the FCBV requires proper remedies to reduce cavitation effects and to improve flow control performance. Numerical analysis is applied to FCBV flow to find effects of design factors such as seat diameter and valve opening rate. Cases with 3 different sizes of seat diameter and various valve opening rate are selected for the numerical analysis. From the analysis results, it is found that the FCBV with small seat diameter shows better pressure loss performance and reduced cavitation effects.

  • The goal of water quality management on stream and watershed is to focus not on discharged loads management but on a water quality management. Discharged loads management is not goal of water quality management but way for perform with total maximum daily loads management. It is necessary to estimate the relation between non-point source with stromwater runoff (NPSSR) and water quality to select a watershed where it is required to manage NPSSR for water quality improvement. To evaluate the effects of NPSSR on stream's water quality, we compare the aspects of water quality in dry and wet seasons using flow duration curve analysis based on flow rate variation data by actual surveying. In this study we attempt to quantify the variation characteristic of water quality and estimate the Inflow characteristic of pollution source with water quality and flow rate monitoring on 10 watersheds. We try to estimate water quality and flow rate by regression analysis and try again regression analysis with each high and low water quality data more than estimations. An analysis of relation between water quality and flow rate of 10 watersheds shows that the water quality of the Nonsan and the Ganggyeong streams had been polluted by NPSSR pollutants. Other eight streams were important point source more than NPSSR. It is wide variation range of $BOD_5$ also high average concentration of $BOD_5$. We have to quantify water quality variation by cv1 in wet season and cv365 in dry season with comparing the estimate of high water quality and low water quality. This method can be used to indicator for water quality variation according to flow rate.

  • An application of contra-rotating rotors, in which a rear rotor is in tandem with a front one and these rotors rotate in the opposite direction each other, has been proposed against a demand for developing higher specific speed axial flow pump. One prototype rotors, which we have designed with a conventional method, has given the positive slope of head characteristic curve especially in the rear rotor. It is necessary to understand the internal flow behavior in the rear rotor to establish the design guideline for achieving higher and more reliable performance. In the present study, we carried out the experimental investigations of the internal flow field of the rear rotor, especially at the partial flow rate, by Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) for the main flow and the limiting streamlines observation on rotor surfaces for the boundary layer flows.

  • Hydrophilic treatment of the packing materials in a cooling tower has been made by the ion assisted reaction (IAR) method to increase the wettability of the packing materials. The effects of hydrophilic treatment of packing materials on the performance of a cooling tower have been investigated in a wide range of operating parameters, such as water flow rate, air flow rate, and the water inlet temperature. A pilot cooling tower has been designed and built to model a counter-flow cooling tower. The results obtained indicate that the packing characteristic value with hydrophilic packing could be substantially increased by 6∼19.3% than that with conventional packing in the operating ranges considered. The correlations of the packing characteristic value as a function of water-to-air ratio are suggested for a counter-flow cooling tower with hydrophilic packing as well as with conventional packing.

  • Contents 1 Abstract- In the thermal power plant, there are six manipulated variables; main steam flow, feedwater flow, air flow, spray flow, fuel flow, and gas recirculation flow. Therefore, the thermal power plant control system is a multi-input and output system. In the control system, the main steam temperature typically is regulated by the fuel flow rate and the spray flow rate, and the reheater steam temperature is regulated by the gas recirculation flow rate. Up to the present time, the PID controller has been used to operate this system. This paper focuses on the characteristic comparison of the PID controller, the modified 2-DOF PID Controller on the DCS, in order to design an optimal...

  • Unstable performance deterioration was found on the performance curve of a small propeller fan with a back plate. To investigate this phenomenon and the effects of the back-plate on the performance of the fan, performance tests and flow measurement using 3-hole pitot tube were carried out. Measurements showed that when the flow rate is small, the radial flow dominates, and when the flow rate is large, the axial flow dominates. Performance characteristic of the propeller fan changes from radial to axial type as the flow rate increases. Unstable performance changes are the result of type change of the flow through the fan.

  • CMP (Chemical-Mechanical Polishing) is a process in which both chemical and mechanical mechanisms act simultaneously to produce the planarized wafer. CMP process is an extensive usage and continuing high growth rates in the semiconductor industry. The understanding of the process, however, is much slower. The nature of material removal from the wafer is still undefined and ambiguous. Material removal rate according to the slurry flow rate is also undefined and ambiguous. Thus, in this study, the basic mechanism of material removal rate as slurry flow rate is defined in terms of energy supply and energy loss.

  • The present study investigated the effect of the transversal vibration on the flow characteristics for non-Newtonian fluids. The effect was tested by experiment and numerical analysis. For Newtonian fluids, both of experiment and numerical analysis results showed that mechanical vibration did not affect the flow rate. For non-Newtonian fluids, however, there was significant disagreement between experiment and numerical results. The numerical results showed a negligibly small effect of vibration on the flow rate whereas experimental results showed a significant flow rate increase associated with transversal vibration. The results implied that the increased flow rate was caused not only by imposed shear rates at the wall but also by the changes of rheological characteristics due to the transversal vibration.

  • One of major errors in flow rate measurement for two-phase flow using an Electrical Capacitance Sensor (ECS) concerns sensor sensitivity under temperature raise. The thermal effect on electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) system for air-water two-phase flow monitoring include sensor sensitivity, capacitance measurements, capacitance change and node potential distribution is reported in this paper. The rules of 12-electrode sensor parameters such as capacitance, capacitance change, and change rate of capacitance and sensitivity map the basis of Air-water two-phase flow permittivity distribution and temperature raise are discussed by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. The cross-sectional void fraction as a function of temperature is determined from the scripting capabilities in ANSYS simulation. The results show that the temperature raise had a detrimental effect on the electrodes sensitivity and sensitive domain of electrodes. The FE results are in excellent agreement with an experimental result available in the literature, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed flow rate measurement system.
