  • Landsat-TM images were applied for evaluating the spatial variations of flow and water quality at the Saemankeum areas. For supervised classifications, the results from hydrodynamic modeling and water quality data were compared to the reflectance characteristics of the satellite images. Multiple regression analyses indicated that suspended sediment, transparency, salinity, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus showed a good relationship to the signature. Supervised classifications showed spatial variations of the water environments at the areas under construction. The results showed the satellite imagery may be applied for the project areas with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

  • An advantage offered by brazing over fusion welding is that strong joints may be produced at relatively low heat input. To minimize the thermal effects and maintain the desired dimension of assemblies. the CO$_{2}$ laser beam can be applied to the brazed joint of pin and plate as a micro heat source. This paper presents a analysis model of the laser brazing process considering the laser beam mode and heat flow in brazed parts by using the finite element method. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results obtained from the infrared temperature sensing system. Based on these results, the proper process parameters were investigated to get a good joining quality. The influence of the beam mode change was examined with respect to the temperature distribution and joint quality.

  • In order to improve the water quality of stream water, the facilities equipped with rope media filter have been examined as a part of national projects. This work may provide design and operating parameters from 2 years monitoring for 2 streams. Depending on the characteristics of streams, the flow rate into the facilities were shown different, where K stream was almost the same and D stream was less than 25% of design flow rate. Although the clogging of filter media was not observed during the operation, the removal of accumulated sludges was required for the stable operation. The removal efficiencies of BOD, SS, T-N and T-P for D stream were 60.5%, 80.1%, 25.2% and 36.2%, respectively. The most important factor for the construction of stream water purification facilities was recommended for the selection of proper sites.

  • The facility of constructed wet land combined with filter media was examined in order to improve the water quality of a polluted stream, which has been performed as a part of national projects. Throughout 2 years of operation for a stream, it can provide the design and operating parameters for the purpose of future construction. The influent flow rate was about 50% against the design capacity. The removal efficiencies of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P were 62.9%, 47.1%, 74.8%, 22.4% and 33.5%, respectively. In order to keep this facility stable, the removal of surface filter media and supplement should be periodically conducted. In addition, the proper selection of sites is recommended not to be flooded.

  • In order to quantify the effect of the newly established the Total Water Load Management System in Sapgyo watershed, this study predicted the achievement of the target water quality at each unit watershed and the water quality according to the flow section. The HSPF model, which is the watershed runoff model, was constructed and operated based on 2015, and the water quality was predicted by inputting the loads in final target year(2030). The Load Duration Curve (LDC) was created using the simulated results of base year and target year. As a result of plotting water quality by flow conditions, it was simulated to be close to the BOD target with a difference of 0.1 ~ 0.2 mg/L in all three watersheds during the mid-range flow interval (40 ~ 60%). In case of T-P, although the target water quality was not set, the water quality was improved by Cheonan A 46%, Kokgyo A 29% and Namwon A 25%. The Muhan and Sapgyo river basins meet the target grade of middle-watershed standards. The improvement effect will be positive, as water quality, which achieves the target of Total Load Management System and the target grade of the middle-watershed standards will be expected to flow into the Sapgyo lake.

  • The major 24 tributaries in Nam-River mid-watershed were monitored for discharge and water quality in order to understand the characteristics of the watershed and to select the tributary catchment for improving water quality. According to the analytical results of discharge and water quality monitoring data of 24 tributaries, the mean value of discharge below $0.1m^3/s$ was 62.5% among the monitored tributaries and it mostly exceeded the water quality standards of Nam-river mid-watershed ($BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over). According to the stream grouping method and the water quality delivery load density ($kg/day/km^2$) based on the results of tributary discharge and water quality monitoring, the tributary watersheds for improving the water quality were selected. In the Nam-River mid-watershed, tributaries in the GaJwaCheon, HaChonCheon catchment (Group D, $BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L over) and in the UirYeongCheon, SeokGyoCheon catchment (Group A, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over), which have a small flow (and/or large flow) and a high concentrations of water pollutants. The various water quality improving scheme for tributaries, in accordance with the reduction of potential point source pollution by living sewage and livestock wastewater, should be established and implemented.

  • For the efficient discovery of knowledge and information from the observed systems, data mining techniques can be an useful tool for the prediction of water quality at intake station in rivers. Deterioration of water quality can be caused at intake station in dry season due to insufficient flow. This demands additional outflow from dam since some extent of deterioration can be attenuated by dam reservoir operation to control outflow considering predicted water quality. A seasonal occurrence of high ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N) concentrations has hampered chemical treatment processes of a water plant in Geum river. Monthly flow allocation from upstream dam is important for downstream $NH_3$-N control. In this study, prediction models of water quality based on multiple regression (MR), artificial neural network and data mining methods were developed to understand water quality variation and to support dam operations through providing predicted $NH_3$-N concentrations at intake station. The models were calibrated with eight years of monthly data and verified with another two years of independent data. In those models, the $NH_3$-N concentration for next time step is dependent on dam outflow, river water quality such as alkalinity, temperature, and $NH_3$-N of previous time step. The model performances are compared and evaluated by error analysis and statistical characteristics like correlation and determination coefficients between the observed and the predicted water quality. It is expected that these data mining techniques can present more efficient data-driven tools in modelling stage and it is found that those models can be applied well to predict water quality in stream river systems.

  • Humidity is an important physical quantity that is closely related with the quality of everyday life as well as the quality control of products in various industries. Here, we have developed a divided-flow type humidity generator of which humidity generation is faster than the saturator-based humidity generator in ppm level. The operation principle of the divided-flow humidity generator is first introduced. Then, the performance of the divided-flow humidity generator is verified by testing the radiosonde humidity sensor at low temperature. As a result, the humidity generated from the divided-flow humidity generator is consistent with the saturator-based precision humidity generator within 1.6% relative humidity in the range from 10% to 40% at -45 ℃. It is also found that the radiosonde humidity sensor shows measurement errors by 3% - 5% at -45 ℃ when it is only calibrated at room temperature. The response times of radiosonde humidity sensor using the divided-flow humidity generator are between about 2 and 9 minutes, whereas those by the saturator-based humidity generator are about 20 minutes. In this regard, the divided-flow humidity generator has a merit in terms of fast humidity changes for the calibration of radiosonde humidity sensors at low-temperatures.

  • The downstream of the Nam River Dam is crucial region for long-term water resource planning for Busan and Gyeongnam Province. Thus, the analysis of flow behavior and water quality is necessary for the sustainable surface water management and the control of pollutant source. In this study, the flow field and BOD transport at the downstream of Nam River Dam were analyzed by incorporating 2-D water quality model, RAM4 and 3-D water quality model, WASP with the hydrodynamic model, RAM2 and EFDC, respectively. The application of 2-D flow analysis model, RAM2 showed that velocity distributions at the five transverse sections of the meandering part closely followed the measured values by ADCP, and the flow field and overflow characteristic at the submerged weir showed satisfactory performance compared with the result of 3-D EFDC model. In addition, the BOD concentration field obtained by RAM2-RAM4 coupled modeling was in good agreement with the result by EFDC-WASP model throughout the computational domain. The hydrodynamic characteristic and water quality at the downstream reach of Nam River Dam are mainly influenced by the Dam discharge, and the water quantity is closely related to the water quality control and fishery environment at the lower part of Nakdong River. Therefore, when further quantitative analysis is necessary regarding these issues, 2-D semi-coupled modeling is recommended in terms of computational effectiveness and model application aspect.

  • Numerous valley waters originating from Mt. Mudeung and flowing into Gwangju Cheon flowed into the confluence-type sewage conduit, the Gwangju Cheon became dry and water quality deteriorated. In this study, a method to create a stream was studied by using the valley water of Mt. Mudeung in the Gwangju cheon that flows into the sewage treatment plant as a water source. Flow and water quality surveys were investigated at four points with meaningful flow quantity. As a result, it showed a flow quantity was 105~2,721 m3/day at each point. And the average water quality was BOD5 0.3~1.6 mg/L. If a stream with a flow quantity of 1,500 m3/day is created during the dry season and then flows into the Namgwang bridge of Gwangju cheon, it is predicted that there will be improvements in BOD 7.3%, COD 6.5%, T-P 5.8%, and T-N 5.2%. In addition, it was determined that the load on the flow quantity of the sewage treatment plant due to the inflow of valley water would be reduced, the cost of sewage treatment would be reduced, and it would be the basis for BGN construction by creating waterside amenity in the city.
