In many semi-empirical analyses of flow boiling heat transfer, an annular flow is often assumed as a model flow and the local liquid film thickness is a key parameter in the analysis. This work considers a simple electrical conductance technique to estimate the local liquid film thickness in two-phase annular flows. In this approach, many electrodes are mounted flush with the inner wall of the pipe. Voltage differences between two neighboring electrodes for concentric annular flows with various liquid film thicknesses are obtained before the main experiments and logged in a look-up table. For an actual application in the annual flow, voltage differences of neighboring electrodes are measured and then corresponding local film thicknesses are determined by the interpolation of the look-up table. Even though the proposed technique is quite simple and straightforward, the numerical and static phantom experiments support its usefulness.
Having its roots in medical applications, industrial gamma ray CT has opened up new roads far investigating and modeling industrial processes. Using a line of research related to industrial gamma ray CT, the authors set up a system of single source and detector gamma transmission tomography for wood timber and a packed bed phantom. The hardware of the CT system consists of two servo motors, a data logger, a computer, a radiation source and a radiation detector. One motor simultaneously moves the source and the detector for a parallel beam scanning, whereas the other motor rotates the scan table at a preset projection angle. The image is reconstructed from the measured projections by the filtered back projection method. The phantom was designed to simulate a cross section of a packed bed with a void. The radiation source was 20mCi of Cs-137 and the detector was a 1 inch $\times$ 1 inch NaI (TI) scintillator shielded by a lead collimator. The experimental gamma ray CT image has sufficient resolution to reveal air holes and the density distribution inside the phantom. The system could possibly be applied to a packed bed column or a pipe flow in a petrochemical plant.

An analysis is made for flow and rocket motion during a supersonic separation stage of an air-launching rocket(ALR) from the mother plane. Three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved to analyze the steady/unsteady flow fields around the rocket which is being separated from the mother plane configuration(F-4E Phantom). Simulation results clearly demonstrate the effect of shock-expansion wave interaction around both of the rocket and the mother plane. To predict the behavior of the ALR by the change of the center-of-gravity, three cases of numerical analysis are performed. As a result, a design-guideline of supersonic air-launching rockets for safe separation is proposed.
The pulsatile nature of blood flow makes artefacts in 2D Fourier transform image. Spatial presaturation is known to be effective in eliminating flow artefacts when the spin echo acquisition is employed. However. this method requires additional RF pulse and spoiling gradient for presaturation. In this paper a new flow saturation technique which does not require additional saturation-RF and gradient is proposed. The proposed technique is equivalent to the existing saturation technique but the elimination of the flow component is achieved by a pair of tailored $90^{\circ}-180^{\circ}$ RF pulses in tile spin echo sequence. By use of two tailored RF pulses with opposite phase polarity, a linear phase gradient is generated for those moving materials and consequently all the spins of moving materials become dephased thereby no signal is observable. Computer simulations and experimental results obtained using both a phantom and a human volunteer with a 2.0 T whole body system are also presented.
This study investigated the accuracy of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and computed tomography angiography (CTA) in terms of reflecting the actual vascular length. Three-dimensional time of flight (3D TOF) MRA, 3D contrast-enhanced (CE) MRA, volume-rendering after CTA and maximum intensity projection were investigated using a flow model phantom with a diameter of 2.11 mm and area of $0.26cm^2$. 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla devices were used for 3D TOF MRA and 3D CE MRA. CTA was investigated using 16 and 64 channel CT scanners, and the images were transmitted and reconstructed by volume-rendering and maximum intensity projection, followed by conduit length measurement as described above. The smallest 3D TOF MRA measure was $2.51{\pm}0.12mm$ with a flow velocity of 40 cm/s using the 3.0 Tesla apparatus, and $2.57{\pm}0.07mm$ with a velocity of 71.5 cm/s using the 1.5 Tesla apparatus; both images were magnified from the actual measurement of 2.11 mm. The measurement with the 16 channel CT scanner was smaller ($3.83{\pm}0.37mm$) than the reconstructed image on maximum intensity projection. The images from CTA from examination apparatus and reconstruction technique were all larger than the actual measurement.
Estimation of accurate blood volume flow in ultrasound Doppler blood flow spectrograms is extremely important for clinical diagnostic purposes. Blood volume flow measurements require the assessment of both the velocity distribution and the cross-sectional area of the vessel. Unfortunately, the existing volume flow estimation algorithms by ultrasound lack the velocity space distribution information in cross-sections of a vessel and have the problems of low accuracy and poor stability. In this paper, a new robust ultrasound volume flow estimation method based on multigate (RMG) is proposed and the multigate technology provides detail information on the local velocity distribution. In this method, an accurate double iterative flow velocity estimation algorithm (DIV) is used to estimate the mean velocity and it has been tested on in vivo data from carotid. The results from experiments indicate a mean standard deviation of less than 6% in flow velocities when estimated for a range of SNR levels. The RMG method is validated in a custom-designed experimental setup, Doppler phantom and imitation blood flow control system. In vitro experimental results show that the mean error of the RMG algorithm is 4.81%. Low errors in blood volume flow estimation make the prospect of using the RMG algorithm for real-time blood volume flow estimation possible.

Vessel boundary detection and modeling is a difficult but a necessary task in analyzing the mechanics of inflammation and the structure of the microvasculature. In this paper we present a method of analyzing the structure by means of an active contour model(using GVF Snake) for vessel boundary detection and 3D reconstruction. For this purpose we used a virtual vessel model and produced a phantom model. From these phantom images we obtained the contours of the vessel by GVF Snake and then reconstructed a 3D structure by using the coordinates of snakes.
The purpose of this study, was Let's examine the exposure dose at the time of cerebral blood flow CT scan of acute ischemic stroke patients. In particular, long-term high doses of radiation sensitive organs and we Measured using phantom and a glass dosimeter. Apply the existing protocol suggested by the manufacturer (fixed time delay technique) and the proposed new convergence protocol (bolus tracking technique), reporting to measure the dose, dose reduction was to prepare the way. Results up to 39.8% as compared to the existing protocols in a new suggested convergence protocol, a minimum of 5.8% was long-term dose is reduced. Test dose of $CDTI_{vol}$ and DLP values decreased 25%, respectively, were measured at less than recommended dose. Try checking the protocol set out in the existing based on the analysis result of the above, by applying the proposed new convergence protocol by reducing the dose would have to contribute to improved public health. It is believed to be research continues to find the optimum protocol in the other tests.
Bubbles are generated by the boiling of the cooling water when an accident occurs in the reactor and then in order to measure the void fraction, the Optical Fiber Probe(OFP) and optical camera are used in thermal hydraulic safety research. However, such an optical method is not suitable for measuring the void fraction in a $17{\times}17$ array of fuel rods due to the geometrical limitations. This study was conducted as a preliminary study using x-ray system and various phantoms before applying to rod bundles. Through radiographic and tomographic experiments, the tube voltage of the x-ray generator was 130 kVp and the tube current was 1 mA. In addition, it is possible to measure the hole of 1mm in size visually through the bubble resolution phantom, and it is confirmed that the contrast is relatively decreased in the inside of the freon in the case of the contrast evaluation using the road phantom. However, we could obtain good image without distortion when reconstructing the image. Bubble generation phantom experiments were used to confirm the flow direction of the bubbles and to acquire tomography images. The image J tool was used to measure the void fraction of 18 % for a single tomography image. This study has carried out previous researches for the measurement of the bubble rate around the nuclear fuel and could be used as a basic research for continuous research.
Tri-phasic pulsatile flow is the general flow pattern of human circulary system. In emulating the various situation of cardiovascular system, it is essential to make tri-phasic source flow. To emulate tri-phasic pulsatile flow, we used electro-hydronic style LVAD(Left Ventricular Assist Device) with glass phantom and rubber tube. We have selected control parameters and examined the changing effect of each parameter by using Doppler ultrasound. In this experiment, it was shown that the distal compliance and the break time were the major factors to form tri-phasic flow. The results make it possible to emulate and explain the various situation of human vascular system. In this point, this results will be an useful method in the clinic application.
