Given the significant social and economic impact caused by heat waves, there is a pressing need to predict them with high accuracy and reliability. In this study, we analyzed the real-time forecast data from six models constituting the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) prediction project, to elucidate the key mechanisms contributing to the prediction of the recent record-breaking Korean heat wave event in 2018. Weekly anomalies were first obtained by subtracting the 2017-2020 mean values for both S2S model simulations and observations. By comparing four Korean heat-wave-related indices from S2S models to the observed data, we aimed to identify key climate processes affecting prediction accuracy. The results showed that superior performance at predicting the 2018 Korean heat wave was achieved when the model showed better prediction performance for the anomalous anticyclonic activity in the upper troposphere of Eastern Europe and the cyclonic circulation over the Western North Pacific (WNP) region compared to the observed data. Furthermore, the development of upper-tropospheric anticyclones in Eastern Europe was closely related to global warming and the occurrence of La Niña events. The anomalous cyclonic flow in the WNP region coincided with enhancements in Madden-Julian oscillation phases 4-6. Our results indicate that, for the accurate prediction of heat waves, such as the 2018 Korean heat wave, it is imperative for the S2S models to realistically reproduce the variabilities over the Eastern Europe and WNP regions.
The seismic holding behaviors of plate anchor embedded into submerged coarse-grained soils were investigated considering different anchor inclinations. The limit equilibrium method and the Pseudo-Dynamic Approach (PDA) were employed to calculate the inertia force of the soils within the failure rupture. In addition, assuming the permeability of coarse-grained soils was sufficiently large, the coefficient of hydrodynamic force applied on the inclined plate anchor is obtained through adopting the exact potential flow theory. Therefore, the seismic holding resistance was calculated as the combination of the inertia force and the hydrodynamic force within the failure rupture. The failure rupture can be developed due to the uplift loads, which was assumed to be an arc of a circle perpendicular to the anchor and inclines at (π/4 - φ/2). Then, the derived analytical solutions were evaluated by comparing the static breakout factor Nγ to the published experimental and analytical results. The influences of soil and wave properties on the plate anchor holding behavior are reported. Finally, the dynamic anchor holding coefficients Nγd, were reported to illustrate the anchor holding behaviors. Results show that the soil accelerations in x and z directions were both nonlinear. The amplifications of soil accelerations were more severe at lower normalized frequencies (ωH/V) compared to higher normalized frequencies. The coefficient of hydrodynamic force, C, of the plate anchor was found to be almost constant with anchor inclinations. Finally, the seismic anchor holding coefficient oscillated with the oscillation of the inertia force on the plate anchor.

Background: The effects of exercise on pulmonary function are complex and have been the subject of many investigations. But, there has been disputes about the effect of exercise on spirometric parameters and there is no study about the effect of exercise on IOS(Impulse Oscillometry)parameters. IOS, a new method of pulmonary function test, is based on the relationship between the pressure and flow oscillation which is produced by applying sinusoidal pressure oscillation to the respiratory system via the mouth. Method: Fifty-nine young adults without respiratory symptoms were divided into three groups according to degree of exercise(hard exercise group: mean exercise time is over three hours per week at least for the last one month, light exercise group : between thirty minutes to three hours, nonexercise group : less than thirty minutes) and undertaken pulmonary function test(simple spirometry and IOS). Results: The effects of exercise on spirometric parameters; percentage of predictive value of forced vital capacity(FVC % pred) was higher in hard exercise group than nonexercise group(hard exercise group: $102.4{\pm}14.8$, nonexercise group: $93.7{\pm}9.9$, p=0.017), but there was no significant difference in percentage of predicted value of forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV 1 % pred) and percentage of predicted value of forced expiratory flow 50% (FEF 50% pred) between groups. The effects of exercise on IOS parameters: Reactance at 5Hz(X5) was significantly lower in hard exercise group than nonexercise group(hard exercise group: $-0.166{\pm}0.123hPa/1/s$, nonexercise group: $-0.093{\pm}0.036hPa/1/s$, p=0.006) but there was no significant difference in central resistance(Rc), peripheral resistance(Rp), resonance frequency(RF) and resistance at 5Hz, 20Hz between groups. Conclusion: Hard exercise increased FVC % pred on spirometric parameters and decreased reactance at 5Hz(X5) on IOS parameters.

An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the influence of Reynolds number on the near-wake of an oscillating airfoil. An NACA 0012 airfoil was sinusoidally pitched at the quarter chord point, and is oscillated over a range of instantaneous angles of attack of $\pm$6$^{\circ}$. An X-type hot-wire probe was employed to measure the near-wake of an oscillating airfoil, and the smoke-wire visualization technique was used to examine the flow properties of the boundary layer. The free-stream velocities were 1.98, 2.83 and 4.03 m/s and the corresponding chord Reynolds numbers were 2.3${\times}10^4$, 3.3$\times$104 and 4.8${\times}10^4$, respectively. The frequency of airfoil oscillation was adjusted to fix a reduced frequency of K=0.1. The results show that the properties of the boundary layer and the near-wake can dramatically be distinguished in the range of Reynolds numbers between 2.3${\times}10^4$ and 3.3${\times}10^4$, on the other hand, it is similar in the cases of Re=3.3$\times$104 and 4.8$\times$104. This is caused by that the unsteady separation point is dramatically delayed in case of Re= 2.3${\times}10^4$.

The Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) is formed by cold and dry wind in the previous winter, and is known to spread southward along the central trough of the Yellow Sea in summer. Water characteristics of the YSCW and its movement in the northern East China Sea (ECS) are investigated by analyzing CTD (conductivity-Temperature-Depth) data collected from summertime hydrographic surveys between 2003 and 2009. By water mass analysis, we newly define the North Western Cold Water (NWCW) as a cold water mass observed in the study area. It is characterized by temperature below $13.2^{\circ}C$, salinity of 32.6~33.7 psu, and density (${\sigma}_t$) of 24.7~25.5. The NWCW appears to flow southward at about a speed less than 2 cm/s according to the geostrophic calculation. The newly defined NWCW shows an interannual variation in the range of temperature and occupied area, which is in close relation with the sea surface temperature (SST) over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in the previous winter season. The winter SST is determined by winter air temperature, which shows a high correlation with the winter-mean Arctic Oscillation (AO) index. The negative winter-mean AO causes the low winter SST over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, resulting in the summertime expansion and lower temperature of the NWCW in the study area. This study shows a dynamic relation among the winter-mean AO index, SST, and NWCW, which helps to predict the movement of NWCW in the northern ECS in summer.

In this paper, some of main processes for the next generation integrated circuits, such as Cu damascene process using CMP, electron beam lithography, $SiO_2$ CVD and RIE, Ti/Cu-CVD were carried cut and then, two level Cu interconnects were accomplished. In the results of CMP unit processes, a 4,635 ${\AA}$/min of removal rate, a selectivity of Cu : $SiO_2$ of 150:1, a uniformity of 4.0% are obtained under process conditions of a head pressure of 4 PSI, table and head speed of 25rpm, a oscillation distance of 40 mm, and a slurry flow rate of 40 ml/min. Also 0.18 ${\mu}m\;SiO_2$ via-line patterns are fabricated using 1000 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ dose, 6 minute and 30 second development time and 1 minute and 30 second etching time. And finally sub-0.2 ${\mu}$ twolevel metal interconnects using the developed processes were fabricated and the problems of multilevel interconnects are discussed.
In this paper, the wind tunnel test for the measurement of aerodynamic characteristics of transmission conductors with asymmetric sections is described. A single conductor model and bundled conductor models with ice accreted shapes are tested both in steady and turbulent flow, and the aerodynamic coefficients are acquired. Transmission conductor galloping is a kind of wind-induced vibration which is characterized by primarily vertical oscillation with a very low frequency and a high amplitude. It is well known that transmission conductor galloping is generally caused by moderately strong, steady winds when a transmission conductor has an asymmetric cross-section shaped by accreted ice. Galloping should be considered from the design stage of overhead lines because it can cause severe wear and fatigue damage to attachments as well as transmission conductors. It is reported that there have been normally 20 events of galloping per year in Korea, which may be followed by serious consequences in the electric power system. Therefore, this research is performed to measure aerodynamic characteristics of ice accreted transmission conductors to understand and control transmission conductor galloping so that it would help to prevent unexpected failures and reduce the maintenance costs caused by galloping.

In this study, numerical analyses on Quad Tilt Rotor(QTR) are carried out to investigate the interference effect of components and effect of operating condition during forward flight. Actuator Surface Method(ASM) which is implemented in an open source CFD code, OpenFOAM, is used to calculate the flow field around QTR with high computational efficiency. The lift of the front and rear wing is found to increase or decrease depending on the rotation direction of the rotor. At the rear wing, the interference effects of the front and rear rotor appear as a combined manner. Performance change due to the phase difference is found to be insignificant. For both rotors, the locally higher thrust is generated by the blockage effect of the wing. The interference effect of wake from the front nacelle contributes to higher local thrust for the rear rotor compared to the front rotor. And it is observed that the amplitude of thrust oscillation can decrease depending on the phase difference between the rotors. Aerodynamic performances of both rotors and the entire aircraft were compared and analyzed for various operating conditions.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of low-frequency oscillations on the cow udder, milk parameters, and animal welfare during the automated milking process. The study's objective was to investigate the impact of low-frequency oscillations on the udder and teats' blood circulation by creating a mathematical model of mammary glands, using milkers and vibrators to analyze the theoretical dynamics of oscillations. The mechanical vibration device developed and tested in the study was mounted on a DeLaval automatic milking machine, which excited the udder with low-frequency oscillations, allowing the analysis of input parameters (temperature, oscillation amplitude) and using feedback data, changing the device parameters such as vibration frequency and duration. The experimental study was performed using an artificial cow's udder model with and without milk and a DeLaval milking machine, exciting the model with low-frequency harmonic oscillations (frequency range 15-60 Hz, vibration amplitude 2-5 mm). The investigation in vitro applying low-frequency of the vibration system's first-order frequencies in lateral (X) direction showed the low-frequency values of 23.5-26.5 Hz (effective frequency of the simulation analysis was 25.0 Hz). The tested values of the first-order frequency of the vibration system in the vertical (Y) direction were 37.5-41.5 Hz (effective frequency of the simulation analysis was 41.0 Hz), with higher amplitude and lower vibration damping. During in vivo experiments, while milking, the vibrator was inducing mechanical milking-similar vibrations in the udder. The vibrations were spreading to the entire udder and caused physiotherapeutic effects such as activated physiological processes and increased udder base temperature by 0.57℃ (p < 0.001), thus increasing blood flow in the udder. Used low-frequency vibrations did not significantly affect milk yield, milk composition, milk quality indicators, and animal welfare. The investigation results showed that applying low-frequency vibration on a cow udder during automatic milking is a non-invasive, efficient method to stimulate blood circulation in the udder and improve teat and udder health without changing milk quality and production. Further studies will be carried out in the following research phase on clinical and subclinical mastitis cows.

From bacteria to mammalian cells, one of the most important mediators of intracellular signal transduction mechanisms which regulate a variety of intracellular processes is free calcium. In salivary acinar cells, elevation of intracellular calcium concentration ($[Ca^{2+}]_i$) is essential for the salivary secretion induced by parasympathetic stimulation. However, in addition to $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, gap junctions which couple individual cells electrically and chemically have also been reported to regulate enzyme secretion in pancreatic acinar cells. Since the plasma membrane of salivary acinar cells has a high density of gap junctions, and these cells are electrically and chemically coupled with each other, gap junctions may modulate the secretory function of salivary glands. In this respect, I planned to investigate the role of gap junctions in the modulation of salivary secretion and $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, using mandibular salivary glands of rats. In order to measure the salivary flow rate, fluid was collected from the cannulated duct of the isolated perfused rat mandibular glands at 2 min intervals. $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, was measured from the cells loaded with fura-2 by spectrofluorometry. The results obtained were as follows: 1. CCh-induced salivary secretion was reversibly inhibited by 1 mM octanol, a gap junction blocker. 2. CCh-induced increase in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, was also reversed by the application of 1 mM octanol. 3. Octanol did not block the initial increase in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ caused by CCh, which suggested that the reduction of $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, caused by gap junction blockade was not resulted from the inhibition of $Ca^{2+}$ release from intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ stores. 4. Addition of octanol during stimulation with $1{\mu}M$ thapsigargin, a potent microsomal ATPase inhibitor, reduced $[Ca^{2+}]_i$, to the basal level. This suggested that inhibition of gap junction permeability closed plasma membrane $Ca^{2+}$ channels. 5. 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzohydroquinone (TBQ) generated $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ oscillations resulting from periodic influx of $Ca^{2+}$ via plasma membrane. The TBQ-induced $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ oscillations were stopped by the application of 1mM octanol which implicated that gap junctions modulate the permeability of plasma membrane $Ca^{2+}$ channels. 6. Glycyrrhetinic acid, another well known gap junction blocker, also inhibited CCh-induced salivary secretion from rat mandibular glands. These results suggested that gap junctions play an important role in the modulation of fluid secretion from the rat mandibular glands and this was probably due to the inhibition of $Ca^{2+}$ influx through the plasma membrane $Ca^{2+}$ channels.
