  • Three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow around rectangular cylinders with various side ratios, D/H, from 0.2 to 2.0 is carried out for Reynolds number of 1000 by using multi-directional finite difference method in multi-grid. The predicted results are well compared with the experimental data. It is found that fluid dynamics characteristics alternate between high pressure mode. and low pressure mode of the base pressure for rectangular cylinder of D/H=0.2-0.6.

This flow has added to diversifying communications including data and images. While the fixed mode Is diversifying information media by digitalization of communications network and computers, the mobile mode has brought higher sophistication of communication modes by a higher degree of electric wave utilization. The following descriptions outlines the mobile communication which Is utilizing the electric wave phenomena. In sequence the following items are described: a brief history of mobile communications, the technical object and various kinds of services, propagation of electric wave signal.

  • Thermal comfort inside a passenger car has been receiving large attention in automobile industries. Especially, the performance of windshield defroster is important in the design of a car to ensure passenger comport and safety. Thereby, better understanding on the ventilation flow along the vehicle windshield is essential to evaluate the performance of windshield defroster. However, most previous studies dealt with the defrost flow using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations or scale-down model experiments. In this study, a real commercial automobile was used to investigate the flow discharged from the vehicle defroster and the ventilation flow along the windshield using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. The experimental data would be useful to understand the flow characteristics in detail and also can be used to validate numerical predictions.

  • A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted using turbulence models. Cavity geometry and flow conditions are based on Cattafesta's experiment. Baldwin-Lomax model and ${\kappa}-{\varpi}$ model are employed. While simulation with Baldwin-Lomax model predicts the oscillatory features of the flow, the use of ${\kappa}-{\varpi}$ model in its original form makes the simulation converge to steady flow. To acquire oscillatory flow solution, Kato-Launder form and Time scale bound are adopted in production term of ${\kappa}-{\varpi}$ model. The strouhal number of the flow oscillations from the simulation results corresponds to 1 st mode in simulation but 2 nd mode in experiments. However mean velocity profile is in good agreement with the experimental data and the fluctuation profile follows the tendency of Cattafesta's results.

  • The distribution control of refrigerant flow is one of the basic technique to enhance system efficiency. However, if engineers forget to control the refrigerant flow speed in all operation range, refrigerant flow mal distribution becomes a noise source. The refrigerant flow noise should be checked and controlled at the lowest air flow mode which is the most silent mode and frequently used in night time.

  • The electrospray operated in the cone-jet mode can generate highly charged micro droplets in an almost uniform size at low flow rates. Therefore, the multiplexing system which can retain the characteristics of the cone-jet mode is inevitable for the electrospray application. This experiment reports the multiplexed grooved nozzle system with the extractor. The effects of the grooves and the extractor on the performance of the electrospray were evaluated through experiments. Using the grooved nozzle, the stable cone-jet mode can be achieved at the each groove in the grooved mode. Furthermore, the number of nozzles per unit area is increased by the extractor. The multiplexing density is 12 jets per $cm^2$ at 30 mm distance from the nozzle tip to the ground plate. The multiplexing system for the high flow rate electrospray is realized with the extractor which can diminish the space charge effect without sacrificing characteristics of the cone-jet mode.

  • This study aims to understand the internal flow and the evaporation characteristics of a deionized water droplet subjected to vertical forced vibrations. To predict and evaluate its resonance frequency, the theories of Lamb, Strani, and Sabetta have been applied. To visualize the precise mode, shape, and internal flow inside a droplet, the experiment utilizes a combination of a high-speed camera, macro lens, and continuous laser. As a result, a water droplet on a hydrophobic surface has its typical shape at each mode, and complicated vortices are observed inside the droplet. In particular, large symmetrical flow streams are generated along the vertical axis at each mode, with a large circulating movement from the bottom to the top and then to the triple contact line along the droplet surface. In addition, a bifurcation-shaped flow pattern is formed at modes 2 and 4, whereas a large ellipsoid-shape flow pattern forms at modes 6 and 8. Mode 4 has the fastest internal flow speed and evaporation rate, followed by modes 8 then 6, with 2 having the slowest of these properties. Each mode has the fastest evaporation rate amongst its neighboring frequencies. Finally, the droplet evaporation under vertical vibration would lead to more rapid evaporation, particularly for mode 4.

  • Ginseng saponin was isolated from panax ginseng root using high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC). Preliminary studies were performed to optimize physical properties of two-phase solvent system and operating parameters including rotation speed of column, elution mode of mobile phase, and flow rate. Two-phase solvent system for isolation of ginseng saponins was composed of chloroform, water, and methanol as blending solvent. Chloroform-aqueous methanol (4:6) systems with various concentration of methanol in water were evaluated for retention of stationary phase in column. Retention of stationary phase decreased with increasing flow rate in tail-to-head elution mode using upper phase as mobile phase and head-to-tail elution mode using lower phase as mobile phase. Latter mode produced high retention at flow rate of 5 mL/min. Optimum conditions for isolation of saponin were chloroform/methanol/water (40/39/21) solvent system; mobile phase, of lower organic layer, flow rate, of 5 mL/min, head to tail elution mode, rotation speed, of 800 rpm, and sample injection, of $200{\mu}L$, Recovery yield of ginseng saponin from panax ginseng root extract by HSCCC was 63.6%, and the purity of HSCCC fractions was verified by TLC.

  • The conventional Flow Duration Curve has limitations that it does not consider hydrologic persistence of daily discharge, that the daily discharge is greatly affected by the maximums or minimums, and that the date of occurrence and duration of a specific discharge cannot be known. In this study, we propose a Daily Mode Discharge Curve, which consists of aligning the daily discharge each year by the date of occurrence, calculating the daily mode discharge, and averaging them every 5 days. As a result of reviewing the long-term observational daily discharge data at 8 points upstream and downstream of the mainstream of the 4 major rivers in Korea, it was found that the daily discharge at all points shows hydrological persistence, and the distortion of it was alleviated by using Daily Mode Discharge Curve. We also suggest that the Daily Mode Discharge Curve is useful for utilizing reference discharge such as Drought, Low, Normal, Plentiful, and Flood Discharge.

  • This paper concerns the application and demonstration of sliding mode observer for aeroelastic system, which is robust to model uncertainty including mass and stiffness of the system and various disturbances. The performance of a sliding mode observer is compared with that of a conventional Kalman filter to demonstrate robustness and disturbance decoupling characteristics. Aeroelastic instability may occur when an elastic structure is moving even in subcritical flow speed region. Simulation results using sliding mode observer are presented to control aeroelastic response of flapped wing system due to various external excitations as well as model uncertainty and sinusoidal disturbances in subcritical incompressible flow region.
