Multiple fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have been proposed and demonstrated for gas-flow measurements in a flow channel, using the temperature-difference method. This sensor consists of two FBG temperature sensors and two coil heaters. Coil heaters are used to heat the FBGs. The flow rate of the gas can be obtained by monitoring the difference in the Bragg-wavelength shifts of the two FBGs, which has features that exclude the effect of temperature fluctuations. In this study, experiments are conducted to measure the wavelength shift based on the flow rate, and to evaluate the gas-flow rate in a gas tube. Experimental results show that the sensor has a linear characteristic over a flow-rate range from 0 to 25 ℓ/min. The measured sensitivity of the sensor is 3.2 pm/(ℓ/min) at a coil current of 120 mA.
In this study, flow patterns in the ice-harbor fishway were analyzed according to fluctuations of the upstream water level, an increase of weir interval, and the presence or absence of orifices using a three-dimensional commercial numerical model, Flow-3D. In order to prove the suitability of the numerical simulation results, the flow velocity and flow rate at the exit of the fishway were observed using a 3D ultrasonic velocimetry on an actual ice-harbor fishway installed downstream of the Daegok bridge in Gyeongan-Cheon. Four types of turbulence modules can be selected for the Flow-3D model. As a result of verification with observation data, the RNG model best described the flow characteristics in the ice-harbor fishway. The velocity structure in the fishway according to fluctuations of the upstream water level was simulated. The results showed that the plunging flow and the streaming flow were mixed at the lowest water level. When the water level increased about 10 cm or more from the lowest water level, the plunging flow disappeared in all pools and only the streaming flow occurred. Contrary to expectations, even when the water level is rose a little, the flow simply occurred mainly on the streaming flow. If the interval between the weirs is increased, both the plunging flow and the streaming flow are showed continued even if the water level rises. In addition, compared to the case where there are no orifices at the bottom of the weirs, the plunging flow tends to be generated in several pools. It is necessary to prevent blocking orifices through active management so that various flow patterns in the fishway can be generated in multiple pools.
The flow characteristics in a vaneless diffuser with a backswept radial impeller have been experimentally investigated according to the variation of discharge flow rate. Particle image velocimetry(PIV) system was applied to measure velocity fields with several operating conditions and on some diffuser horizontal planes. Pressure transducers were installed on hub wall of the diffuser in order to analyze the pressure fluctuations and their corresponding velocity fields. The results show that the location of the main flow center moves from the hub to the shroud side as the flow rate decreases, and the reverse flow is locally generated on the hub side.
Temporal variation of nutrients and dissolved major and trace elements have been studied in the Yeongsan River, Korea. There were significant temporal fluctuations in the concentrations of these elements depending upon the flow condition. $NH_4$, $PO_4$, Na, Mg, Ca, K, Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, As and U concentrations were inversely related to the flow; that is, they are the highest at low flow and the lowest at high flow. It indicates that these elements are derived from point sources such as rock weathering and/or human activities and then diluted by increasing flow. Meanwhile, Fe and Si concentrations varied proportionally to the flow indicating that they are derived from diffuse sources including reactions within soil. The concentration-flow relationships showed that hydrology of the river is the most important factor controlling the chemical composition of the Yeongsan riverwater, which was compatible of the results of R-mode factor analysis.

Numerical simulations of flow over two spheres placed in a tandem arrangement are conducted to investigate the effect of the inter-sphere spacing on the flow characteristics. The Reynolds numbers considered are 100, 250, 300 and 425, corresponding to steady axisymmetric, steady planar-symmetric, unsteady planar-symmetric, and unsteady asymmetric flows, respectively, in the case of a single sphere. For small inter-sphere spacings, the flow past two spheres is more stable than that past a single sphere. For example, with the spacing of the sphere radius, the flow is steady axisymmetric up to Re=300. However, for relatively large spacings, the flow past two spheres becomes unstable and vortex shedding takes place even at Re=250. The drag coefficient of the rear sphere decreases significantly with decreasing inter-sphere spacing due to reduction of the stagnation pressure, thus being smaller than that of the front sphere. Also, the rear sphere shows large fluctuations of the lift force as compared to the front one in the case of unsteady flow.

In order to establish appropriate policy to control sediment-associated problems, it is necessary to identify the physical characteristics of the reservoir sediments in particulate form in the Yeongsan River. Two time-integrated suspended sediment samplers were installed at Seungchon and Juksan weir on the upper and middle Yeongsan River in July 2012. Reservoir sediment samples were obtained at monthly intervals until October 2014. During the monitoring period, a total of 38 sediment samples were obtained and analyzed. Seasonal trends of suspended sedimentation rates and grain size distributions were examined based on variations in precipitation and discharge fluctuations. Moreover, stream flow characteristics, which has a great influence on the physical characteristics of the river sediment, was analyzed using flow duration curve for the period 2003-2019 at Naju gauging station. Sedimentation rates during summer, when heavy rainfall was concentrated due to the monsoonal front and typhoon, were very high, indicating the positive relationship between sediment concentration and discharge. Particle size analysis of the collected sediment showed that coarse silt and very fine sand-sized sediment dominated most of the Seungchon weir sediment. On the other hand, medium silt-sized sediment dominated the downstream Juksan weir except for a few summer samples. These results implied that the physical characteristics of the suspended sediment are determined not only due to flow fluctuations, but also with regard to the antecedent rainfall conditions, hillslope-channel connectivity, and the supply of materials from various contributing regions. This information about flow characteristics and temporal variations in reservoir sediment can be used for safe management of the weir and discussing the issues on the dismantling of the weirs.
This study presents the measured unsteady flctuation of impeller discharge flow for a centrifugal compressor in an unstable operating region. The characteristics of the blade-to-blade flow at rotating stall onset were investigated by measuring unsteady velocity fluctuations at several different diffuser axial distances using a hot wire anemometer. The flow characteristics in terms of the radial and tangential velocity components and the flow angle distribution at the impeller exit were analyzed using phase-locked ensemble averaging techniques. As a result, increase or decrease of the radial velocity component during the rotating stall is dominated by that of the suction side. The radial velocity distributions show the opposite trends in the regions where the radial velocity during rotating stall onset increases and decreases.

Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the mean velocity profile, root-mean-square of velocity fluctuations, Reynolds shear stress and turbulent viscosity.

Unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by a computational method. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer, and sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The computed fan performance is favorably compared with experimental data, and also indicates that the performance is not significantly altered by the random pitch effect at ${\phi}>0.4$. In the present study, the narrow-band noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random Pitch (type-A and-B) blades are compared by the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra, and their frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are also discussed.
