  • Internal and external defects of an inner pulley for automobile air conditioner are investigated in this study. Inner pulley is a part of compressor clutch assembly of automobile air conditioner. In cold forging of inner pulley, the design requirement are to keep the same height of the inner rib and outer one and to make uniform distribution of hardness in the forged product. At the end of the forging of inner pulley, the piping defect as an external defect begins to form at the back center of the billet. The internal crack as an internal defect also occur at the adiabatic shear band which usually has maximum ductile fracture value. It is important to predict when the internal and external defects occur during the deformation process, in order to minimize the amount of discard that is generated. The finite element simulations are applied to analyze the defects. The validity of the computational results are examined by experiments. These computational results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

  • An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital hole in the atrial septum that allows flow between the two atria. Small ASDs are usually well-tolerated defects and do not result in significant clinical abnormalities. In large ASDs or in the presence of other cardiac defects, clinically significancy is increased. Atrial septal defects in 2 Dogs with cardiac and respiratory signs were diagnosed at seoul animal medical center. In ascultation, systolic murmur and the splitting of second heart sound were heard at pulmonary or tricuspid valve region. In radiograph, right-sided cardiomegaly, pulmonary artery dilation, increased pulmonary vasculature makings, and pleural effusion or pulmonary edema signs were observed. In echocardiography, the region, location and size of septal defect was identified. Also, the direction and degree of shunt was measured. These dogs were treated with medicine for cardiac failure. One dog is well-tolerated, the other dog died.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of local wall thinning on the collapse of elbow subjected to internal pressure and bending moment. Thus, the nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed to obtain the collapse moment of elbow containing various wall thinning defects located at intrados and extrados under two loading modes (closing and opening modes) with internal pressure. From the results of analysis, the effect of wall thinning defect on the global moment-rotation behavior of elbow was discussed, and the dependence of collapse moment of elbow on wall thinning depth, length, and circumferential angle was investigated under different loading mode and defect location.

  • Reconstruction of soft tissue defects around the knee is challenging, and the most common solution is to use various locoregional flaps or, in some difficult cases, a free flap. The distally based anterolateral thigh (dALT) flap is a commonly used flap that relies on reverse blood flow from the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery (d-LCFA). Here, we present the case of an anteromedial knee reconstruction using a dALT flap after resection of a pleomorphic undifferentiated sarcoma. The tumor resection resulted in a 14 × 7 cm defect, and a dALT flap, measuring 20 × 8 cm was elevated. During the surgery, we found a robust oblique branch of the LCFA (o-LCFA) sending off two sizable perforators to the anterolateral thigh region, whereas the d-LCFA was relatively small with no usable perforators. Therefore, we harvested a dALT flap relying on reverse flow from the o-LCFA. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful, and the flap survived without complications. This report demonstrates that reverse flow from the o-LCFA may be an alternative to nourish a dALT flap in cases where the d-LCFA is hypoplastic or suitable perforators from the d-LCFA are unavailable.

  • The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the near wake(X/d=5.0) of a circular cylinder with serrated fins. Velocity of fluid which flow through fins decreases as increasing fin height and freestream velocity and decreasing fin pitch. Therefore the velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. The discontinuity of the streamwise velocity gradient is observed near the fin edge and causes significant changes in V-component velocity distribution in the near wake. This change attributes to the differences in Strouhal number and entraintment flow behavior. Increased turbulent intensity around a circular cylinder due to the serrated fins and entrainment flow are important factors for the recovery of velocity defect. The widths of velocity and turbulent intensity distribution of fin tubes are wider than those of a circular cylinder. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with a hydraulic diameter which is proposed in this paper are in closer agreement with those of a circular cylinder.

  • Soil-bentonite cutoff walls are widely recognized to be the effective barrier for containment of wastes and groundwater. Bentonite cake is usually found remaining on the trench surface due to the use of bentonite slurry during the excavation for the cutoff wall construction. Defects also inevitably take place due to the inappropriate construction procedures or improperly mixed soil-bentonite backfill. The defects include insufficient keys and windows in the soilbentonite cutoff wall. In this study, the performance of the soil-bentonite cutoff wall is evaluated based on the flow rates through the wall. Three-dimensional numerical models were applied to simulate the groundwater flow through the soil-bentonite cutoff walls of typical geometries with consideration of the defects and bentonite cake. Results of the simulations showed that the bentonite cake has no effect in the insufficient key cases. In the keyed wall cases, the bentonite cake with very low hydraulic conductivity significantly impedes the flow of groundwater through the wall. The presence of the bentonite cake not only compromises the window defect but also renders the wall construction more effective in blocking the groundwater flow. These findings show the significance of the bentonite cake in a soil-bentonite cutoff wall construction.

  • This paper presents the development of the FCF method for the manufacturing of final products using numbers related to the minimum amount of work. The utilized product is a drum clutch, which is part of the transmission of an automobile. A double acting press is secured first and a prediction of the forming load on the practical material is made through an experiment with a plasticine model. Also, a finite element simulation using product shape and properties is performed, as well as a press experiment. A double acting press is manufactured that is suitable for a double acting experiment with a conventional hydraulic press(200 tons). A peripheral device for the press is additionally designed for experimental purposes. And, the press has as its essential points the drive speed, stroke control, etc., all of which influence the forming and is modified. Especially, a laser system is used for velocity measurement of two punches. The forming load of a practical material is predicted in order to derive a forming load formula for cold conditions on the basis of approximate similarity theory. Finite element analysis of the relative velocity ratio(RVR), etc., for most suitable flow defect(unfilling, etc.) prevention is achieved as well. The results are verified through a press experiment.

  • We evaluated the correlationship between the predicted defect size at preoperative examination and the actual defect size at operation room, by examining 69 cases of ventricular septal defect operated at the deparment of Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery, Kyungpook University Hospital from January 1988 to December 1990. We excluded cases associated with other cardiac anomalies. Of the 69 cases, 39 are male and 30 female, forming 1.3:1 sex ratio in males favor. Their age range from 6 months to 16 year, and 4.3 on the average Their body weights are from 6 to 45kg and 15 on the average. According to Soto`s classification, perimembranous type costitutes 42 cases[61%], doubly committed subarterial type 23 cases[33%], and muscular type 4 cases[6%]. The average diameter of defect size is 8.0$\pm$3.5mm measured in 2D-echocardiogram, 5.6$\pm$3.4mm in angiogram, and 7.4$\pm$4.4mm in operative field. There is statistically significant correlation between the size from 2D-echocardiogram and actual defect size[p=0.001], and no significant difference between the two. Especially in the cases without anurysmal formation, they are nearly the same. Cardiothoracic ratio, pulmonary to systemic flow ratio, pressure ratio and resistance ratio also have statistically significant correlation. Main pumonary artery to descending aorta diameter ratio is correlated with the actual defect size. There is statistically significant correlation between the size from angiogram and actual defect size with some difference.

  • Atrial septal defect is one of the most frequently encountered congenital heart disease. Up to December 31, 1976, 1682 cardiac patients received cardiac catheterization in the cardiac department of Yonsei university medical college. Out of the 1682 cardiac patients 723 cases had congenital heart disease and only 116 cases had congetial atrial septal defect. This amounted to 16.04% of all those with congenital heart disease. 58 cases of congenital atrial septal defect operated in the chest surgery department were presented. Of these 58 cases of atrial septal defect, 27 cases were male and 31 cases were female. Their ages ranged from 5 years to 54 years. The systolic pressure of the main pulmonary artery of 40 out of the 58 cases of atrial septal defect was below 40% of that of the systemic blood pressure: in 6 cases, the range of the systolic pressure of the main pulmonary artery was 50-90mmHg; in 12 cases, the range of the systolic pressure of the main pulmonary artery was 40-50mmHg. Average age of these was 30. 1 years. This study tends to show that Korean patients with atrial septal defect even though younger have a slight higher systolic pressure of the main pulmonary artery than Western patients have. The pulmonary blood is 1.5-2.5 times of systemic blood flow in 52 cases out of 58 cases of atrial septal defect. In only one of the 58 cases of atrial septal defect, the Rp was found to be as high as 45% of Rs. All other cases were below this level.51 cases had ostium secundum defect, 4 out of these cases had ostium secundum defect combined with mitral incompetence and 6 out of them had double ostium secundum defect. The remaining 7 cases had ostium primum defect. Their atrial defects were repaired under direct vision utilizing extracorporeal circulation, by hemodilution technic combined with moderate hypothermia. 44 cases [2nd atrial septal defect] were repaired by direct sutures while 14 cases, including the 7 cases ostium primum defects needed patches [1 pericardium and 13 teflon patch]. In 4 cases there were single defects while showed two defects. However the associated septal defect was so small that it could be closed by direct sutures. The size of the defect ranged between 6.0cm2and 10.0cm2 in 19 cases[33.7%]: the smallest being 0. 5cm2 and the largest 24cm2. The surgical mortality was 2 cases [3.4%]. These one case with ostium primum defect, could not be resuscitated on operation table. The cause of death in this case was myocardial failure and MI. The other, a case of ostium primum defect had a second operation on the first operative day due to massive bleeding from LV vent-line insertion site. The patient died on 26th post-operative day due to sepsis.
