  • Multi-dimensional analysis of reactor safety-KINS standard (MARS-KS) is a thermal-hydraulic code to simulate multiple design basis accidents in reactors. The code has been essential to assess nuclear safety, but has mainly focused on light water reactors, which are in the majority in South Korea. Few previous studies considered pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) applications. To verify the code applicability for PHWRs, it is necessary to develop MARS-KS input decks under various transient conditions. This study proposes an input model to simulate small-break loss of coolant accidents for PHWRs. The input model includes major equipment and experimental conditions for test B9802. Calculation results for selected variables during steady-state closely follow test data within ±4%. We adopted the Henry-Fauske model to simulate break flow, with coefficients having similar trends to integrated break mass and trip time for the power supply. Transient calculation results for major thermal-hydraulic factors showed good agreement with experimental data, but further study is required to analyze heat transfer and void condensation inside steam generator u-tubes.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance of a latent heat storage system using paraffin wax as the phase change material. A thermosyphon was employed to transfer heat from the hot ethylene glycol flowing across the evaporator section of the thermosyphon into the wax. In order to increase the effective thermal conductivity of wax, layers of copper wire mesh were immersed in the wax. Experiments were run for volume ratios of 2%, 3%, and 4%, varying mass flow rate of ethylene glycol in each case. Some of the important results are as follows : (1) The wire mesh enhanced the conductive hea transfer and thus, helped even out the temperature distribution in the wax : (2) The increase of the number of layers of wire mesh increased the conduction. However, it also resulted in increasing the resistance to the convective motion of liquefied wax : and (3) There is an optimal number of layers of wire mesh, maximizing the performance of the storage system, which occurred at a volume ratio of $3{\sim}4%$ in the present study.

  • Solar energy has been experiencing renewed interest because of the recent economical crisis in Korea. Absorption cooling is one of the promising solar energy utilization technologies. In this study the dynamic performance of a solar driven absorption cooling machine(SDACM) was numerically investigated. The simulated machine is a commercially available water/LiBr single effect absorption chillers driven by hot water from solar collectors. The present study has been directed to investigate the dynamic behavior of a solar cooling system including an absorption chiller, solar collector, a hot water storage tank, fan coil units, and the air-conditioned space. The operation of the system was simulated for 9 hours in varying operation conditions. The variation of temperature and concentration in the system components, and that of heat transfer rates in the system were obtained. It was also found that the room temperature was maintained near the desired value by controlling the mass flow rate of hot water.

  • Since more than 30% of the liquid rocket engine failures occur during the start-up process, and the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) is especially sensitive to small changes in propellant conditions, a 2% error in the valve position or a 0.1sec timing error could lead to significant damage of the engine, simulation modeling of start-up process is important. However, there are many difficulties associated with engine start-up process caused by nonlinear mass flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with filling an unconditioned engine system with cryogenic propellants. In this paper, we modelled a SSME simulation model using partially Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method to solve these problems and checked the performance by comparing with the performance of the simulation model using the lumped method under the state of normal condition.

  • Thermal stratification phenomena in the liquid oxygen tank of launch vehicle is caused by heat influx from ambient and non-equilibrium heat and mass transfer in the cryogenic tank. The thermal stratification study is needed for designing vent system, tank insulation, pump inlet. In this paper by investigating buoyancy driven boundary layer flow by side wall heating, one dimensional analysis of thermal stratification is peformed. thermal gradient is described with time.

  • SMB (simulated moving bed) is a continuous chromatographic process by shifting periodically port position. Binary of mixture, Blue dextran and Orange G, was separated by SMB. These components have unique color individually, that is, Blue dextran is blue and Orange G is orange. It is easy to understand SMB process by observing the shift of color changes in SMB. These components was not adsorbed to stationary phase and isolated by difference of size exclusion factor. Mass transfer coefficient was determined by single pulse test under several flow rate conditions. Operation condition was obtained by standing wave theory and optimized for high purities in extract and raffinate streams. Experiment was performed in open loop 4 zone (2-2-2-2) SMB. There are several advantages in open loop SMB, where extract is product for high purity. It is also easy to control flow rate and monitor experimental state during operation. Experimental, extract and raffinate history is well fitted with simulation results, however, column concentration profile is a little different from simulation results. Purities were 99.5% for extract and 98.9% for raffinate and extract and raffinate yields were obtained as 98.9% and 99.4% respectively.

  • The purpose of this work was to assess and quantify the beneficial effects of gas exchange, while testingto the various frequencies of the sinusoidal wave that was excited by the PZT actuator, for patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or chronic respiratory problems. Also, this paper considered a simulator to design a hollow type artificial lung, and a mathematical model was used to predict a behavior of blood. This simulation was carried out according to the Montecarno's simulation method, anda fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the equation. The experimental design and procedure are then applied to the construction of a new device to assess the effectiveness of the membrane vibrations. As a result, the vibration method is very effective in the increase of gas transport. The gas exchange efficiency for the vibrating intravascular lung assist device can be increased by emphasizing the following design features: consistent and reproducible fiber geometry, and most importantly, an active means of enhancing convective mixing of water around the hollow fiber membranes. The experimental results showed the effective performance of the vibrating intravascular lung assist device. Also, we concluded that important design parameters were blood flow rates, fiber outer diameter and oxygen pressure drop. Based on the present results, it was believed that the optimal level of blood flow rates was 200$cm^3$/min.

  • Poly-$Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ films on oxidized Si wafer were prepared by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition using the $SiH_4$ and $GeH_4$ gaseous mixture at various deposition conditions. The deposition temperature, $SiH_4\;: GeH_4$ flow ratio and pressure were varied from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$, 1 : 0.1-2 : 1 and 1 to 50 torr, respectively. In this work, we have investigated the change of Ge composition of poly-$Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ films deposited with the variation of deposition parameters and the effect of Ge composition on the deposition rate. From the experimental results, it was observed that the deposition rate increased with increasing deposition temperature and Ge composition. On the other hand, the Ge composition decreased with increasing temperature. As the deposition pressure increased, the deposition rate and Ge composition were increased linearly to 10 torr but increased slowly above it, which has been attributed to the slower rate of surface reaction than mass transfer.

  • In chromatographic separation, HETP(height equivalent to a theoretical plate) is a useful quanititive parameter and it is wildely designated as column efficiency. The effects of operating conditions (sample concentration, injection volume, flow rate and mobile phase composition) on HETP were investigated in perparative liquid chromatography (PLC). Water and organic modifier of methanol were used as mobile phase. The sample of thymidine was injected into preparative C18 columns. The system was run by a isocratic mode in 1.5~5.5ml/min. The larger amounts of sample and higher flow rates of mobile phase increased HETP, which means that column efficiencies were worse. As the weight of sample injected into a chromatographic system could be prepared with different concentrations and injection volumes, for the same amount of sample, HETP was approximately increased two times with the ten-fold injection volume. HETP was mainly affected by the resistance of stationary and mobile phase mass transfer in the intraparticle section of packings at higher velocities.

  • Methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) and c-type cytochromes from marine methanol-oxidizing bacterium, Methylophaga sp. MP, were purified and characterized. The native MDH had a molecular mass of 148 kDa and its isoelectric point was 5.5. Two c-type cytochromes, $c_L\;and\;c_H$, were found, and their isoelectric points were 3.4 and 8.0, respectively. The purified MDH had higher thermal stability than that of the other soil methylotrophic bacteria. The electron flow rate from MDH to cytochrome $c_L$was higher than that from MDH to cytochrome $c_H$, indicating that the physiological primary electron acceptor for MDH is cytochrome $c_L$. The electron transfer from MDH to phenazine ethosulfate (PES, artificial electron acceptor) in the two dye (PES/DCPIP)-linked assay system was not inhibited by NaCl, whereas the electron flow from MDH to cytochrome $c_L$ in the cytochrome/DCPIP-linked assay system was suppressed significantly by NaCl. Metal chelating agents such as EDTA showed the same effects on the MDH activity.
