Asymmetric force and vibration caused by separation flow at high angle of attack affect the stability of supersonic missile. As a preliminary study we verified the effect of turbulence model through general 3-D slender body for the supersonic flow at high angle of attack. ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ Wilcox model, ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ Wilcox-Durbin+ model, ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ shear-stress transport model, and Spalart-Allmaras one equation model are used. Grid sensitivity test was performed with three different grid system. results show that all models are in good agreement with the experimental data.
Fine grid calculations are reported for the developing turbulent flow in a straight duct and a curved duct of square cross-section with a radius of curvature to hydraulic diameter ratio ${\delta}=R_c/H_H=3.357$ and a bend angle of 180 deg. A sequence of modeling refinements is introduced; the replacement of wall function by a fine mesh across the sublayer and a low Reynolds number second moment closure up to the near wall sublayer in which the non-linear return to isotropy model and the cubic-quasi-isotropy model for the pressure strain are adopted; and the introduction of a multiple source model for the exact dissipation rate equation. Each refinement is shown to lead to an appreciable improvement in the agreement between measurement and computation.
Rainfall induced landslides are disasters causing sever damage on the human life and the infrastructures. In this paper, a simplified procedure to evaluate the slope stability problems induced by rainfall by modifying the Iverson's pressure head dispersion model. The proposed approach extends the applicability of the Iverson's model in to the cases of higher rainfall intensity than the permeability of the soil by incorporating the existence of overland flow. In addition, the Manning equation is applied to calculated the depth of overland flow. From the calculated depth of overland flow, shear stress acting on the surface is included for the driving component triggering the landslides. From the analysis of a case study, the long term rainfall alters the stability of slope.
In electric power system, the line stability indices adopted in most of the instances laid stress on variation of reactive power than real power variation of the transmission line. In this paper, a proposal is made with the formulation of a New Voltage Stability Index (NVSI) which originates from the equation of a two bus network, neglecting the resistance of transmission line, resulting in appreciable variations in both real and reactive loading. The efficacy of the index and fuzzy based load flow are validated with IEEE 30 bus and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) 69 bus system, a practical system in India. The results could prove that the identification of weak bus and critical line in both systems is effectively done. The weak area of the practical system and the contingency ranking with overloading either line or generator outages are found by conducting contingency analysis using NVSI.
Of concern in the present theoretical investigation is the study of blood flow and convection-dominated diffusion processes in a model bifurcated artery under stenotic conditions. The geometry of the bifurcated arterial segment having constrictions in both the parent and its daughter arterial lumen frequently appearing in the diseased arteries causing malfunction of the cardiovascular system, is constructed mathematically with the introduction of suitable curvatures at the lateral junction and the flow divider. The streaming blood contained in the bifurcated artery is treated to be Newtonian. The flow dynamical analysis applies the two-dimensional unsteady incompressible nonlinear Wavier-Stokes equations for Newtonian fluid while the mass transport phenomenon is governed by the convection diffusion equation. The motion of the arterial wall and its effect on local fluid mechanics is, however, not ruled out from the present model. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the effects of constricted flow characteristics and the wall motion on the wall shear stress, the concentration profile and on the mass transfer. The ultimate numerical solutions of the coupled flow and diffusion processes following a radial coordinate transformation are based on an appropriate finite difference technique which attain appreciable stability in both the flow phenomena and the convection-dominated diffusion processes.

An analytical model of return flow is presented outside the surf zone. The governing equation is derived from the Navier-Stokes equation and the continuity. Each term of the governing equation is evaluated by the ordering analysis. Then the infinitesimal terms, i.e. the turbulent normal stress, the squared vertical velocity of water particle and the streaming velocity, are neglected. The driving forces of return flow are calculated using the linear wave theory for the shallow water approximation. Especially, the space derivative of local wave heights is described considering a shoaling coefficient. The vertical distribution of eddy viscosity is discussed to the customary types which are the constant, the linear function and the exponential function. Each coefficient of the eddy viscosities which sensitively affect the precision of solutions is uniquely decided from the additional boundary condition which the velocity becomes zero at the wave trough level. Also the boundary conditions at the bottom and the continuity relation are used in the integration of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions of present model are compared with the various experimental results. The solutions show a good agreement with the experimental results in the case of constant or exponential function type eddy viscosity.

Experimental and numerical studies for three-dimensional pulsatile flows are conducted to investigate the flow characteristics in the bifurcated tubes. Velocity measurements in experimental study were made by both Pulsed Doppler Ultrasound(PDU) machine and Laser Doppler Anemometer(LDA) system. Glycerin is used for experimental study. Experimental results are used to verify the results of the numerical simulation. Flow characteristics of Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated tubes under the steady and pulsatlie flows are numerically investigated. Finite volume method is employed for three-dimensional numerical simulations. Blood is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid and the constitutive equation of blood is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical analyses are focused on the flow patterns for various branch angles ranging from 30.deg. to 90.deg. and diameter ratios such as 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6. Pulsatile flow characteristics of blood are compared with those of Newtonian fluid. Parameter effects on axial velocity, pressure and wall shear stress distribution along the bifurcated tubes are discussed in terms of the branch angle, diameter ratio, and Reynolds number.

The steam generator tubes of power plant damaged by sliding wear due to flow-induced motion of foreign object. Amount of wear have been predicted by Achard's wear equation until now. However, there are large error and low reliability, because this equation regards wear coefficient(k) as constant. The sliding wears tests have been performed at room temperature to examine parameters of wear (wear distance, contact stress). The steam generator tube material for wear test is used Inconel 600 and foreign object material is used 304 austenite stainless steel. The sliding wear tests show that the amount of wear is not linearly proportional to the wear distance(for 374 austenite stainless steel). According to experimental result, wear coefficient is not constant k but function k(s) of wear distance. The newly modified wear predictive equation V=k(s)F have small error and high reliability.
Interest in advanced machining process such as AJM(abrasive jet machining) and CMP(chemical-mechanical polishing) using micro/nano-sized abrasives has been on the increasing demand due to wide use of super alloys, composites, semiconductor and ceramics, which are difficult to or cannot be processed by traditional machining methods. In this paper, the effects of pressure, wafer moving velocity and fluid viscosity were investigated by 2-dimensional finite element analysis method considering slurry fluid flow. From the investigation, it could be found that the simulation results quite corresponded well to the Preston's equation that describes pressure/velocity dependency on material removal. The result also revealed that the stress and corresponding material removal induced by the collision of particle may decrease under relatively high wafer moving speed due to the slurry flow resistance. In addition, the increase in slurry fluid viscosity causes the reduction of material removal rate. It should be noted that the viscosity effect can vary with the shape of abrasive particle.

In this study the heat transfer and fluid flow of the molten pool in stationary gas tungsten arc welding using argon shielding gas were investigated. Transporting phenomena from the welding arc to the base material surface, such as current density, heat flux, arc pressure and shear stress acting on the weld pool surface, were taken from the simulation results of the corresponding welding arc. Various driving forces for the weld pool convection were considered, self-induced electromagnetic, surface tension, buoyancy, and impinging plasma arc forces. Furthermore, the effect of surface depression due to the arc pressure acting on the molten pool surface was considered. Because fusion boundary has a curved and unknown shape during welding, a boundary-fitted coordinate system was adopted to precisely describe the boundary for the momentum equation. The numerical model was applied to AISI 304 stainless steel and compared with the experimental results.
