  • It is not possible to define the earth's interior because of it complicity. However, it can be interpreted directly and/ or indirectly. Geophysics is the subject of this study. To study the possibility of construction supervision by geophysical method, geophysical prospecting was performed and studied at the SamYang pumping well area in Cheju Island, where, although underground dam was constructed, the saline water invade the pumping well area. This study focuses on the construction supervision by electrical measurements. Two electric resistivity survey lines are installed in the pumping well site, and at each line electric survey was conducted at ebb and flow tides. To increase the data quality SP (self-potential) survey was also performed. As a result the geophysical exploration methods explained the defect of construction well, and It shows that geophysical probe can be a useful tool for the construction supervision.

  • For precise interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data distorted by irregular surface terrain, topography effects are investigated by computing apparent resistivities, phases, tippers and induction vectors for a three-dimensional (3D) hill-and-valley model. To compute MT responses for the 3D surface topography model, we use a 3D MT modeling algorithm based on an edge finite-element method which is free from vector parasites. Distortions on the apparent resistivity and phase are mainly caused by distorted currents that flow along surface topography. The distribution of tipper amplitudes over both hill and valley are the same, while the tipper points toward the center of hill and the base of the valley. The real part of induction vector also points in the same direction as that of tipper, while the imaginary part in the opposite direction.

  • $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_5$(GST) thin film at present is a promising candidate for a phase change random access memory (PCRAM) based on the difference in resistivity between the crystalline and amorphous phase. PCRAM is an easy to manufacture, low cost storage technology with a high storage density. Therefore today several major chip in manufacturers are investigating this data storage technique. Recently, A. Pirovano et al. showed that PCRAM can be safely scaled down to the 65 nm technology node. G. T Jeonget al. suggested that physical limit of PRAM scaling will be around 10 nm node. Etching process of GST thin ra films below 100 nm range becomes more challenging. However, not much information is available in this area. In this work, we report on a parametric study of ICP etching of GST thin films in $Cl_2$/Ar chemistry. The etching characteristics of $Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_5$ thin films were investigated using an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) of $Cl_2$/Ar gas mixture. The etch rate of the GST films increased with increasing $Cl_2$ flow rate, source and bias powers, and pressure. The selectivity of GST over the $SiO_2$ films was higher than 10:1. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) was performed to examine the chemical species present in the etched surface of GST thin films. XPS results showed that the etch rate-determining element among the Ge, Sb, and Te was Te in the $Cl_2$/Ar plasma.

  • In this study, the acoustic performance of a dissipative silencer used in the ship with excellent performance compared to its size was predicted and analyzed using a numerical analysis method to reduce the pipe noise. To this end, the performance of the single expansion chamber-shaped silencer was verified using experimental and numerical analysis methods. The acoustic performance of the silencer was expressed using the Transmission Loss (TL), an indicator of its own performance, and the result was derived using the two-load method, which measured by changing the impedance at the end of the pipe. For the numerical analysis method, a general-purpose finite element analysis program was used, and the Delany-Bazley-Miki model with the flow resistivity of the sound absorbing material as an input parameter was applied. Finally, we compared the experimental and simulated results for each of the acoustic performances of the single expansion type and the dissipative silencer to confirm the consistency of the results, and predicted and analyzed the simulation results for four cases according to the properties of the sound absorbing material.

  • The aim of this study was to provide basic data that could identify and help prevent a slow-moving landslide using an analysis of the relationship between below-ground characteristics and water from three slow-moving landslide areas in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Surface surveys, resistivity, seismic exploration, well logging, and boring surveys were conducted in the three areas. The main direction of discontinuous surface was matched with the slope direction of the three landslides. The results indicatedthat slow-moving landslides might occur in the direction of the slope. Underground water was distributed within the crush zones within the three landslide areas and flowed along the tensile cracks. There was a significant difference (p<0.01) between the mean angle of the tensile cracks and that of the underground waterflow (p=0.8019). These results indicated that the progress of a slow-moving landslide can be forecast by monitoring the location and flow of underground water within a known slow-moving landslide area.

  • In composites manufacturing, increasing resin impregnation is a key way to speed up the manufacturing process and improve product quality. While resin improvement is important, simple fiber surface treatments can also improve resin flowability. In this study, different plasma treatment times were applied to carbon fiber fabrics to improve the impregnation between resin and fiber. Electrical resistivity measurements were used to evaluate the dispersion of resin in the fibers, which changed with plasma treatment. The effect of fiber surface treatment on resin spreadability could be observed in real time. When inserting a carbon fiber tow into the resin, the amount of resin that soaked into the tow was measured to objectively compare resin impregnation. Five minutes of plasma treatment improved the tensile and compressive strength of the composite by more than 50%, while reducing the void content and increasing the fire point impregnation flow rate. Finally, a dynamic flexural fatigue test was conducted using a portion of the composite used as an architectural composite part, and the composite part did not fail after one million cycles of a 3 kN load.

  • We have investigated the deposition characteristics of Ti-Si-N films obtained by rf magnetron sputtering with ratios of Ti/Si targets in an $Ar/N_2$ gas mixture. The growth rate and stoichiometry dependence of the Ti-Si-N films on the ratio of Ti/Si and $N_2$ flow rate ratio were found to be due to the different nitriding rate of Ti and Si targets. Additionally, their different sputtering yield of nitrified Ti and Si make a reason as well. Lowering Si content in the film favored the formation of crystalline TiN, leading to the low resistivity. Increasing N content led to the Ti-Si-N films having a higher density and compressive stress, suggesting that the N content in the film is one of the most important factors determining the diffusion barrier characteristics. In the current work, the optimum process conditions for the formation of efficient diffusion barrier of Ti-Si-N film has successfully obtained by manipulating the Ti/Si ratio of target and $N_2$ flow rate ratio.

  • Transparent conducting gallium-doped zinc oxide (GZO) thin films which were deposited on Corning glass substrate using an Gun-type rf magnetron sputtering deposition technology. The GZO thin films were fabricated with an GZO ceramic target (Zn : 97[wt%], $Ga_2O_3$ : 3[wt%]). The GZO thin films were deposited by varying the growth conditions such as the substrate temperature, oxygen pressure. Among the GZO thin films fabricated in this study, the one formed at conditions of the substrate temperature of 200[$^{\circ}C$], Ar flow rate of 50[sccm], $O_2$ flow rate of 5[sccm], rf power of 80[W] and working pressure of 5[mtorr] showed the best properties of an electrical resistivity of $2.536{\times}10^{-4}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$, a carrier concentration of $7.746{\times}10^{20}[cm^{-3}]$, and a carrier mobility of 31.77[$cm^2/V{\cdot}S$], which indicates that it could be used as a transparent electrode for thin film transistor and flat panel display applications.

  • In this paper, the magnetic properties and the annealing behavior of spin valve structures with Mo(MoN) underlayers were studied for various underlayer thickness. The spin valve structure was Si substrate/Mo(MoN)$(t{\AA})/NiFe(21{\AA})/CoFe(28{\AA})/Cu(22{\AA})/CoFe(18{\AA})/IrMn(65{\AA})/Ta(25 {\AA})$. Mo and MoN films were deposited on Si substrates and their thermal annealing behavior was analyzed. The deposition rate of the MoN thin film was decreased and tile resistivity of the MoN thin films were increased as the $N_2$ gas flow was increased. The variations of MR ratio and magnetic exchange coupling field of spin valve structure were smaller with MoN underlayers than that with Mo underlayers up to thickness of $51{\AA}$. MR ratio of spin valves with Mo underlayers was 2.86% at room temperature and increased up to 2.91 % after annealing at $200^{\circ}C$. Upon annealing at $300^{\circ}C$, the MR ratio decreased about 2.16%. The MR ratio of spin valves structure with MoN underlayers for $N_2$ gas flow 1 sccm was 5.27% at room temperature and increased up to 5.56% after annealing at $200^{\circ}C$. Upon annealing at $300^{\circ}C$, the MR ratio decreased about 4.9%.

  • Characteristics of bubbling behavior and bubble properties were investigated in a gas-liquid countercurrent bubble column of in diameter 0.152 m and 3.5 m in height, respectively. Effects of gas and liquid velocities and bubble distribution mode(even, wall-side, central or asymmetric distribution) on the bubble properties such as chord length, frequency, rising velocity and holdup in the reactor were measured and examined by means of dual resistivity probe method. The bubble size, frequency and holdup increased with increasing gas($U_G$) or liquid velocity($U_L$). The rising velocity of bubbles increased with increasing $U_G$, whereas decreased with increasing $U_L$. The uniformity of bubble size distribution and bubble holdup decreased when the distribution mode of bubbles at the gas distributor was changed from even to wall-side, central or asymmetric. The central distribution of bubbles was better than asymmetric mode but worse than wall-side distribution, in considering the bubble holdup and uniformity of distribution.
