A numerical analysis on engine coolant is made by the use of FVM based general purpose 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes solver, TURB-3D. Numerical solutions are verified by comparison with the experimental data of Lotus model. The results show a good qualitative as well as quantitative comparison. Coolant flow rate control is attempted through adjusting the cross section area of passage base on the results of an original coolant passage. It is concluded from the results that the flow rate control is possible as attempted, and thus can be used in the real engine design.
The inter-comparison of standards is required to be recognized the calibration results. The sonic nozzle package is developed to do inter-comparison of the bell preyer used to calibrate many gas flow meters for industries. Four national metrology institutes (KRISS, CMS, CENAM, NEL) were participated in this inter-comparison. The deviation of calibration data from the average value was small at the low flow rate and large at the high flow rate, respectively At the high flow rate, the deviation was larger than the expected value from uncertainties asserted by NMIs. This means there are some problems in the uncertainty evaluation and experiment procedures in some of the participated NMIs.
The paper deals with the accuracy comparison between two kinds of ultrasonic paths for flow rate measurement. In the Z-path, two transducers are installed on the opposite sides of each other on a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves generated at one transducer propagate to arrive at the other one only by refraction. In the V-path, two transducers are installed on one side of a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves reflected at the inner wall of the pipe are received. Transit times were confirmed to identify the propagation paths by comparing the theoretically calculated results and measured ones. The flow rate measurements with two kinds of ultrasonic paths appeared very similar. It would be possible to select either of the paths by considering the advantages and disadvantages.
Various studies on the critical flow models for sub-cooled and/or saturated water were reviewed, especially on Fauske, Moody, and Henry for basic theoretical models; Zaloudek for insight into physical phenomena for a critical flow in an orifice type flow path; Sozzi & Sutherland for a critical flow test of saturated and sub-cooled water at high pressure for orifice and nozzles; and a Marviken test on a full-scale critical flow test. In addition, critical flow tests of sub-cooled water for the break simulators in integral effect test (IET) facilities were also investigated, and a hybrid concept using Moody's and Fauske's models was considered by the authors. In the comparison of the models for the selected test data, discussions of the effect of the diameters, predictions of the critical flow models, and design aspects of break simulator for SBLOCA scenarios in the IET facilities were presented. In the effect of diameter on the critical flow rate with respect to all dimensional scales, it was concluded that the effect of diameter was found irrespective of diameter sizes. In addition, the diameter effect on slip ratio affecting the critical flow rate was suggested. From a comparison of the critical flow models and selected test data, the Henry-Fauske model of the MARS-KS code was found to be the best model predicting the critical flow rate for the selected test data under study.
The paper proposes a model-based measurement of unsteady flow rate by using distributed parameter pipeline model and the measured pressure values at two distant points along the pipeline. The distributed parameter model of hydraulic pipeline is applied with consideration of frequency dependent viscosity friction and unsteady velocity distribution at a cross section of a pipeline. By using the self-diagnostics functions of the measurement method, the validity is investigated by comparison with the measured and estimated pressure and flow rate wave forms at the halfway section on the pipeline. The results show good agreement between the estimated flow rate wave forms and theoretical those under unsteady laminar flow conditions. The method proposed here is useful in estimating unsteady flow rate through an arbitrary cross section in hydraulic pipeline and components without installing an instantaneous flowmeter.
Characteristics of flow rate control has been studied for a cavitating venturi adopted in a liquid rocket propellant feed system. Numerical simulation has been peformed to give about $10\%$ discrepancy of mass flow rate to the experimental data for cavitating flow regime. Mass flow rate is confirmed to be saturated for pressure difference higher than $3\times10^5$pa when the upstream pressure is fixed to $22.8\times10^5$pa and the downstream pressure is varied. The evaporation amount depends substantially to non-condensable gas concentration. However the mass flow rate characteristic is relatively insensitive to the mass fraction of non-condensable gas. So it is reduced by only $2\%$ when the non- condensable gas concentration is increased from 1.5PPM to 150PPM. From the previous comparison the expansions of the non-condensable gas and the evaporation of liquid are verified to have same effect to pressure recovery.
The measurement of unsteady flow rate is of vital importance to clarify and improve the dynamic characteristics in pipeline, hydraulic components and system. There is also demand for a real time flow sensor of ability to measure unsteady flow rate with high accuracy and fast response to realize feedback control of flow rate in fluid power systems. In this paper, we propose an approach for estimating unsteady flow rate through a pipeline and components under high pressure condition. In the method, unsteady flow rate is estimated by using hydraulic pipeline dynamics and the measured pressure values at two distant points along the pipeline. The distributed parameter model of hydraulic pipeline is applied with consideration of frequency dependent viscosity friction and unsteady velocity distribution at a cross section of a pipeline. By using the self-checking functions of the method, the validity is investigated by comparison with the measured and estimated pressure waveforms at the halfway section on the pipeline. The results show good agreement between the estimated flow rate waveforms and theroetical those under unsteady laminar flow conditions. the method proposed here is useful in estimating unsteady flow rate through an arbitray cross section in hydraulic pipeline and components without installing an instantaneous flowmeter.
In this study, experiments were performed for various drying air temperatures, air flow rates tray distance to analyze drying characteristics of batch type tunnel dryer. In comparison of tunnel drying with cabinet drying which is currently used in the farm, the results of drying simulation model of cabinet dryer was used and then the possibility of applying the drying simulation model of cabinet dryer to batch type tunnel dryer was investigated. The results showed that as the drying temperature increased, the drying rte and moisture difference in the direction of air flow increased and as the air flow rate increased, the drying rate increased and moisture differences decreased. In tunnel dryer, drying through bottom of the tray had large effect on drying rate and the effect was more significant when the drying temperature increased. As air flow rate increased, the difference of drying rates between tunnel and cabinet drying increased and drying rate of tunnel of drying was higher. The drying simulation model could estimate moisture content in tunnel more precisely by using modified effective moisture diffusion coefficient for air flow rate.
This paper describes the steady flow characteristics due to PDA and tumble control valve in combustion chamber. We also investigated the flow inclination angle defined as the inverse tangent of non-dimensional rig tumble(NRT) devided by non-dimensional rig swirl(NRS) to find dominant flow direction. So we adapted two different types of PDA valve(port deactivation valve) to strengthen a swirl flow. The in-cylinder swirl flow different tendency between with/without PDA valve. It might be thought to be affected by swirl flow. We could find that tumble ratio and swirl ratio is different by PDA valve. The comparison are taked account of the swirl, the tumble ratio comparison in same mass flow rate. As a result, PDA valve is better than tumble control valve both in steady flow condition and swirl, tumble ratio. The data from present study are available for design of engine as the basic data.
A preliminary design procedure for a multi-stage axial compressor is developed, which is based on the stage-stacking method. It determines the flow coefficient which gives rise to the design conditions required such as pressure ratio, mass flow rate and rotational speed for a given specific mass flow rate at inlet to a compressor. With this flow coefficient, blade radii, every stage and compressor performance characterics such as stage pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency etc. are calculated by stacking each stage performance characteristics. It is shown that there is an optimum number of stage which results in the maximum of compressor overall efficiency for a given specific mass flow rate at inlet to a compressor. A test design was tried for three different geometric design constraints, and comparison with a previous study shows that present procedure could be used reliably in determining the number of compressor stage in preliminary design stage.
