보텍스 쉐딩에 의한 얕은 직사각형통 내에서의 유동특성 (The Flow Characteristics in a Shallow Rectangular Tank by Vortex Shedding)

  • A numerical and experimental study has been performed on the flow in a shallow rectangular tank accompanying a vortex shedding. The model is composed of a rectangular tank with a vertical plate with a length half the width of the tank. The tank is subject to a horizontal sinusoidal oscillation. The numerical analysis shows that the pattern of vortex shedding changes considerably when the Reynolds number $R_e$ is varied from 500 to 7500. It is symmetric for $R_e$ <1500 and asymmetric for $R_e$ > 1500. The kinetic energies of the right-hand and left-hand sides of the vertical plate are used to quantify the degree of the asymmetry. Experimental visualization is carried out at $R_e$ = 3876 and 52000. The development of the streamline pattern at $R_e$ = 3876 is in closer agreement with the numerical result at $R_e$ = 1000 than that at $R_e$ =3876. The asymmetric pattern is observed at $R_e$ = 52000.

  • Heteroepitaxial InP films have been grown on GaAs substrates to study the effects of the nucleation layer's surface roughness on the epitaxial layer's quality. For this, InP nucleation layers were grown at $400^{\circ}C$ with various ethyldimethylindium (EDMIn) flow rates and durations of growth, annealed at $6200^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes and then InP epitaxial layers were grown at $550^{\circ}C$. It has been found that the nucleation layer's surface roughness is a critical factor on the epitaxial layer's quality. When a nucleation layer is grown with an EDMIn flow rate of 2.3 ${\mu}mole/min$ for 12 minutes, the surface roughness of the nucleation layer is minimum and the successively grown epitaxial layer's qualities are comparable to those of the homoepitaxial InP layers reported. The minimum full width at half maximum of InP (200) x-ray diffraction peak and that of near-band-edge peak from a 4.4 K photoluminescence are 60 arcmin and 6.33 meV, respectively.

  • Heteroepitaxial GaN films were grown on sapphire substrates in order to study the effects of the buffer layer's surface roughness and thermal treatment on the epitaxial layer's quality. For this, GaN buffer layers were grown at $550^{\circ}C$ with various TMGa flow rates and durations of growth, and annealed at $1010^{\circ}C$ for 3 min after the temperature was raised by 23 ~ $92^{\circ}C/min$, and then GaN epitaxial layers were grown at $1000^{\circ}C$. It has been found that the buffer layer's surface roughness and the thermal treatment condition are critical factors on the quality of the epitaxial layer. When a buffer layer was frown with a TMGa flow rate of $24\mu mole/min$ for 30 sec, the surface roughness of the buffer lather was minimum and when the thermal ramping rate was $30.6^{\circ}C/min$ on this layer, the successively grown epitaxial layer's crystalline and optical qualities were optimized with a specular morphology. The minimum full width at half maximum(FWHM) of GaN(0002) x-ray diffraction peak and that of near-band-edge(NBE) peak from a room temperature photoluminescence (PL) were 5 arcmin and 9 nm, respectively.

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layers were deposited by a metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique using single liquid source for the application of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) coated conductor. Y:Zr mole ratio was 0.2:0.8, and tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used as a solvent. The (100) single crystal MgO substrate was used for searching deposition condition. Bi-axially oriented CeO$_2$ and NiO films were fabricated on {100}〈001〉 Ni substrate by the same method and used as templates. At a constant working pressure of 10 Torr, the deposition temperatures (660~80$0^{\circ}C$) and oxygen flow rates (100~500 sccm) were changed to find the optimum deposition condition. The best (100) oriented YSZ film on MgO was obtained at 74$0^{\circ}C$ and $O_2$ flow rate of 300 sccm. For YSZ buffer layer with this deposition condition on CeO$_2$/Ni template, full width half maximum (FWHM) values of the in-plane and out-of-plane alignments were 10.6$^{\circ}$ and 9.8$^{\circ}$, respectively. The SEM image of YSZ film on CeO$_2$/Ni showed surface morphologies without microcrack.k.

원통형 이층유체의 회전반실험 (극전선 모의) (Laboratory Experiment of Two-Layered Fluid in a Rotating Cylindrical Container (Simulation of polar Front))

  • 회전하는 원통형 이층 유체에 하층 유체와 동일한 밀도의 유체를 경사진 하층 바 닥의 둘레를 통하여 주입시 하층 내부는 일정한 수직 운동을 하게 되며 이러한 수직운 동은 결국 하층 유체에 Sverdrup type의 운동인 남향의 서안 경계류와 북향의 내부 운 동을 발생시킨다. 이때 $\beta$-효과와 동시에 하층 유체가 상층 경계면과 만나게 하므로써 소위 극전선 효과를 갖고 있는 상층 유체의 운동 특성을 관찰하였다. 서안에서 의 순 압성, 동안에서 의 경압성 운동이 뚜렷하게 나타나고 특히 동안 경계류의 남향과 서안 경계류의 남향은 서안에서 의 이안 현상을 야기시킨다. 상층에 $\beta$-효과를 증가시 서안 경계류의 폭이 감소하는 이안 현상후 내부에 "eddy" 모양의 흐름이 존재한다. 한편 경압성 Rossby wave는 동안 부근에서 뚜렷하게 관측되나 서쪽으로 진행하면서 소멸되 는 현상이 관측되었다. 하층 유체에 국지적 지형 효과서 준 경우 상층수의 서안 경계 류 및 동안 경계류가 민감하게 반응하여 동안에서는 정상파 형태의 운동이 나타나고 서안에서는 이안 현상 없이 경계류의 폭이 증가함을 보인다. 이는 하층의 순압성 운동 이 지형 효과를 느끼는 반면, 그 영향은 상층에 직접전달되지 못하고 있음을 보여주고 있는 것이라 사료된다. 상층의 $\beta$-효과 증가시 internal radius보다 훨씬 큰 규모의 파형이 내부에 존재하는 특성을 보여 주고 있다. 보여 주고 있다.

하천고수부지 수질정화 자유수면인공습지의 초기운영단계 인제거 (Phosphorous Removal Rate of a Surface-Flow Treatment Wetland System Constructed on Floodplain During Its Initial Operating Stage)

  • Phosphorous removal rate and emergent plant growth were examined of a surface-flow constructed treatment wetland system, whose dimensions were 31 meter in length and 12 meter in width. The system was established on floodplain in the down reach of the Kwangju Stream in Korea in one and half months from May to June 2001. Cattails(Typha angustiflora) were transplanted in the system. They were dug out of natural wetlands and stems were cut at about 40 cm height from their bottom ends. Water of the Kwangju Stream were funneled into it via a pipe by gravity flow and its effluent were discharged back into it. The stems of cattails grew from 45.2 cm in July 2001 up to 186 cm in September 2001 and the number of cattail stems per square meter increased from 22 in July 2001 to 53 in September 2001. The early establishment of cattails was good. Volume and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from July 2001 through December 2001. Inflow averaged $40\;m^3/day$ and hydraulic retention time was about 1.5 days. The concentration of total phosphorous in influent and effluent was 0.85 mg/L, 0.41 mg/L, respectively. The average removal rate of total phosphorous in the system was about 52%. The retention efficiency was slightly lower, compared with that in surface-flow wetlands operating in North America, whose retention efficiency was reported to be about 57%. The lower abatement rate could result from the initial stage of the system and inclusion of two cold months into the six-month monitoring period. Root rhizosphere in wetland soils and litter-soil layers on bottoms were not properly developed. Increase of standing density of cattails within a few years will establish both root zones and substrates beneficial to the removal of phosphorous, which may lead to increase of the phosphorous retention rate. The system was submerged one time by heavy storm during the monitoring period. The inundation, however, scarcely disturb its environment.

Finite element modeling of high Deborah number planar contraction flows with rational function interpolation of the Leonov model

  • A new numerical algorithm of finite element methods is presented to solve high Deborah number flow problems with geometric singularities. The steady inertialess planar 4 : 1 contraction flow is chosen for its test. As a viscoelastic constitutive equation, we have applied the globally stable (dissipative and Hadamard stable) Leonov model that can also properly accommodate important nonlinear viscoelastic phenomena. The streamline upwinding method with discrete elastic-viscous stress splitting is incorporated. New interpolation functions classified as rational interpolation, an alternative formalism to enhance numerical convergence at high Deborah number, are implemented not for the whole set of finite elements but for a few elements attached to the entrance comer, where stress singularity seems to exist. The rational interpolation scheme contains one arbitrary parameter b that controls the singular behavior of the rational functions, and its value is specified to yield the best stabilization effect. The new interpolation method raises the limit of Deborah number by 2∼5 times. Therefore on average, we can obtain convergent solution up to the Deborah number of 200 for which the comer vortex size reaches 1.6 times of the half width of the upstream reservoir. Examining spatial violation of the positive definiteness of the elastic strain tensor, we conjecture that the stabilization effect results from the peculiar behavior of rational functions identified as steep gradient on one domain boundary and linear slope on the other. Whereas the rational interpolation of both elastic strain and velocity distorts solutions significantly, it is shown that the variation of solutions incurred by rational interpolation only of the elastic strain is almost negligible. It is also verified that the rational interpolation deteriorates speed of convergence with respect to mesh refinement.

하천수를 정화하는 자유수면습지의 식물 성장기와 비성장기의 질소제거 비교 (Comparison of Nitrogen Removal During Plant Growing Season with Non-Growing One in Free Water Surface Wetlands Purifying Stream Water)

  • Removal rates of NO3-N and TN in a free water surface wetland system during emergent plant growing season and non-growing were investigated. The system was established on floodplain in the down reach of the Gwangju Stream in 2008. Its dimensions were 46 meters in length and 5 meters in width. Typha angustifloria L. growing in pots about two years were planted on the half area of the system and Zizania latifolia Turcz on the other half. Water of the stream was funneled into it by gravity flow and its effluent was discharged back into it. Volumes and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from October 2008 to September 2009. Inflow into the system averaged approximately 715 $m^3$/day and hydraulic residence time was about 1.5 hr. Average influent and effluent $NO_3$-N concentration was 3.37 and 2.74 mg/L, respectively and $NO_3$-N retention amounted to 18.7%. Influent and effluent TN concentration averaged 4.67 and 3.69 mg/L, respectively and TN abatement reached to 20.9%. $NO_3$-N removal rate (%) during plant growing season ($22.67{\pm}3.70$, mean ${\pm}$ standard error) was significantly high (p<0.001) when compared with that during plant non-growing one ($15.02{\pm}3.23$). TN abatement rate (%) during plant growing season ($27.42{\pm}5.98$) was also significantly high (p<0.001) when compared with that during plant non-growing one ($13.66{\pm}3.08$).

Experimental Investigation of Local Half-cone Scouring Against Dam under the Effect of Localized Vibrations in the Sediment Layers

  • Most natural river reach are approximately balanced with respect to sediment inflow and outflow. Dam construction dramatically alters this balance, creating an impounded river reach characterized by extremely low flow velocities and efficient sediment trapping. The impounded reach will accumulate sediment and lose storage capacity until a balance is again achieved, which would normally occur after the impoundment has become "filled up" with sediment and can no longer provide water storage and other benefits. This paper aims to investigate the sediment removal process in dam reservoir using simultaneously pressure flushing operation and vibrator machine. The main objective of this study is to identify the effect of vibrator in flushing cone dimensions. To achieve the objectives of present study, laboratory test have conducted under different hydraulic conditions such as two bottom outlets with diameter equal to 2" and 3", five discharges 0.23, 0.53, 1.21, 1.53 and 2.1 lit/s and only one water depth above the center of bottom outlets. Using the vibrator machine mounted into the reservoir and close to the bottom outlet, different frequency e.g. 20, 35 and 50 HZ, have been introduced to the deposited sediment at the vicinity of outlet. The results indicate that the volume and width of flushing cone are strongly affected by frequency of vibrations. Open-jet boundary-layer processes for aerodynamic testing of low-rise buildings

  • Investigations on simulated near-surface atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in an open-jet facility are carried out by conducting experimental tests on small-scale models of low-rise buildings. The objectives of the current study are: (1) to determine the optimal location of test buildings from the exit of the open-jet facility, and (2) to investigate the scale effect on the aerodynamic pressure characteristics. Based on the results, the newly built open-jet facility is well capable of producing mean wind speed and turbulence profiles representing open-terrain conditions. The results show that the proximity of the test model to the open-jet governs the length of the separation bubble as well as the peak roof pressures. However, test models placed at a horizontal distance of 2.5H (H is height of the wind field) from the exit of the open-jet, with a width that is half the width of the wind field and a length of 1H, have consistent mean and peak pressure coefficients when compared with available results from wind tunnel testing. In addition, testing models with as large as 16% blockage ratio is feasible within the open-jet facility. This reveals the importance of open-jet facilities as a robust tool to alleviate the scale restrictions involved in physical investigations of flow pattern around civil engineering structures. The results and findings of this study are useful for putting forward recommendations and guidelines for testing protocols at open-jet facilities, eventually helping the progress of enhanced standard provisions on the design of low-rise buildings for wind.
