  • In the present study, the characteristic of flow distribution in the channel of a plate heat exchanger is investigated numerically. In order to accomplish the efficient and fast analyses of the flow characteristics in the channel, a semi-microscopic analysis has been performed using a porous media model. For semi-microscopic analysis using porous media, the flow resistance coefficients are obtained through the result of pressure drop in the experimental data. The results showed that the variation of mass flow rate, geometry and chevron angle strongly depend on the flow distribution in the channel. Particularly, the chevron angle is most important factor for uniform flow distribution.

  • Flow control butterfly valve(FCBV) is known to have difficulty in controlling flow rate along valve opening due to its high flow rate. In low opening condition, the butterfly valve also has some shortcomings such as noise, vibration and erosion which are mostly caused by cavitation effects. Therefore, the FCBV requires proper remedies to reduce cavitation effects and to improve flow control performance. Numerical analysis is applied to FCBV flow to find effects of design factors such as seat diameter and valve opening rate. Cases with 3 different sizes of seat diameter and various valve opening rate are selected for the numerical analysis. From the analysis results, it is found that the FCBV with small seat diameter shows better pressure loss performance and reduced cavitation effects.

  • Numerical analysis of two dimensional incompressible laminar free jet flow was carried out by using finite difference SMAC scheme. Flow characteristics of free jet flow such as jet width, similarity of jet velocity and hypothetical origin were investigated for different Reynolds numbers of Re=30 and 100. The reliability of predictions were confirmed by comparison with exact solution. Non-dimensional velocity distribution showed similarity of jet flow velocity after initial region. In the region of laminar flow, the location of hypothetical origin becomes more distant with Reynolds number.

  • Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. In the new algorithm, there are many similarity between multi phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the direction vector of cell, each particle to each passenger, volume fraction to population density and the momentum equation of particle to the walking velocity equation of passenger, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger, To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for simple railway station model is conducted. The results for passenger flow in the model station are satisfying qualitatively and quantitatively.

  • The maximum speed and pressure distribution close to a warhead are altered based on the warhead shape, thereby resulting in changes to the flight distance and the destructive power. In this study, flow analysis was carried out based on the warhead shell shape. The maximum flow rate was detected at the side of shell, with a lower flow rate being found at the rear of the shell. In addition, the maximum pressure was detected at the warhead. It was also found that the reduction in the flow rate between the rear and the side of the shell in model A was smaller than that in model B. The obtained results are expected to be useful in the future design of shell warhead shape.

  • Weld line is one of serious troubles which are observed in a plastic part manufactured by a injection molding process. This is caused by many process factors, which are molding pressure, temperature, velocity, location of a injection gate, mold geometry and material properties. investigation on the effects of these process factors to the appearance of a weld line was carried out using a finite element method. Filling and packing analyses were carried out by modifying both the configuration of the injection gates and cavity thickness. Proper locations of the injection gates could be determined by considering molding pressure, temperature, velocity and frozen layer, and whereby the weld line was controled. In order to make a weak appearance of the weld line, flow velocity and flow front in a cavity were also investigated by modifying a cavity thickness. As a result, flow front was extended around the corner in the cavity by changing the flow velocity and hence the appearance of the weld line was much weakened.

  • Insight into behaviour of pedestrians as welt as tools to assess passenger flow condition is important in such instances as planning and geometric design of railway station under regular and safety-critical circumstances. Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM (Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. There are lots of similarity between particle-laden two phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the unit vector of calculation cell, each particle to passenger, volume fraction to population density and the particle velocity to the walking velocity, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger. To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for the basic models of railway station is conducted.

  • A study for increase of fan flow rate by geometric modification has been conducted to decrease temperature rise of marine generator inner part. Through experiment of a real product, a performance curve for various flow resistances was obtained. Flow analyses for each cases were done by using commercial code-FLUENT and the results were very similar to experimental data (0.7% deviation at normal operating condition). Through flow analysis results for various design geometric modification, a scroll type fan was adopted as a best design geometry with 100Pa more pressure and 22% more flow rate than original fan.

  • This study result is obtained by flow analysis according to opening and shutting angle of ball valve. As opening and shutting angle becomes larger, vortex flow becomes smaller and flow rate becomes increased. And the pressure drop is shown to be smaller at the inlet and outlet of ball. As this angle becomes larger, mass flow rate becomes increased. Its rate becomes increased abruptly in case of opening and shutting angle at more than $60^{\circ}$.This analysis result can be applied usefully with no leak at pipe system field by the optimum control of mass flow rate according to opening and shutting of ball valve.
