  • The purpose of this study is to convert hydrophobic dyestuff to hydrophilic dyestuff by reacting cationic collector with anionic dyestuff and reaction anionic collector with cationic dyestuff. The removal of colors from aqueous solutions and/or dispersions has been studied by dispersed-air flotation in a batch column. In this studies used generated micro bubble by ceramic gas diffuser having micro pore size for air flotation process. In this study, a ceramic gas diffuser with micro pore size was used to generate micro bubbles for the air flotation process. Two colours were used for the experiments: Basic Yellow 1 (cationic dyestuff) and Direct Orange 10 (anionic dyestuff). All two were effectively removed by flotation within 8 mins. Sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium oleate (an anionic collector), and amines (a cationic collector) were found to be effective as collectors in the removal of color, which was found to be related to the pH of the solution and the amount of collector added to it, with high collector dosages causing the process to become pH-independent.

  • The main advantage of dissolved air flotation (DAF) in water treatment process is the small dimension compared with conventional gravity sedimentation and it can be basically reduced by the separation zone performed with the short solid-liquid separation time. Fine bubbles make such a short time possible to carry out solid from liquid separation as a collector on the course of water treatment. Therefore, the dimension of separation zone in DAF process is practically determined by the rise velocity of the bubble-floc agglomerates, which is a floc attached with several bubbles. To improve flotation velocity and particle removal efficiency in DAF process, many researchers have tried to attach bubbles as much as possible to flocs. Therefore, the maximum number of attached bubble on a floc and the rise velocity of bubble-floc agglomerates considered as the most important factor to design the separation zone of flotation tank in DAF process was simulated based on the population balance theory. According to the simulation results of this study, the size and volume concentration of bubble influenced on the possible number of attached bubble on a floc. The agglomerates attached with smaller bubble was more sensitive to hydraulic loading rate in the separation zone of DAF process. For the design of a high rate DAF process applied over surface loading 40 m/hr. it is required a precise further study on the variation of bubble property and behavior including in terms of bubble size distribution.

  • In the flotation process to remove microplastic (MP) particles, the attachment and separation efficiency is determined by the basic physicochemical characteristics of MP particles as well as bubbles. To evaluate the flotation characteristics of MP particles, we carried out a series of simulations using the population balance (PB) model. The initial attachment coefficient (αo) of MP particles was in the range of 0.2-0.275, and it was slightly lower than that of typical particles, such as clay, debris and algae particles, which exist in water bodies, αo, 0.3-0.4. The relative bubble number (RBN) attached to the surface of the typical number of bubbles was 0.30 and 0.32 for MP 30 ㎛ and MP 58 ㎛, respectively. In comparison, the RBN of larger MP particles (138 ㎛) was as high as 0.53. Furthermore, smaller microbubbles were required to separate properly or additional treatment needed to be applied to enhance collision and attachment efficiency since the flotation of MP particles was found to be difficult to treat as high-rate. As a result of comparing the removal rate (experimental value) of MP particles obtained from the batch-type flotation apparatus and the flotation removal rate (predicted value) of MP obtained through the PB model, the final particles by the particle size of MP overall except for the initial separation time area. With respect to the removal efficiency, the observed and predicted values were similar, and it was confirmed that the floating separation characteristics and evaluation of the MP particles through the PB model could be possible.

  • Presence of old newspapers printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss of brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. It has been shown that neutral or acidic flotation deinking has many advantages in recycling of flexo printed newsprints. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the deinking efficiency of three alcohol type deinking agents in flotation deinking of flexo printed newspapers. Zeta potential of neutral deinked pulp was less negative than alkaline deinked pulp. Also neutral deinking was advantages in reducing turbidity, COD, and cationic de-mands of deinking process water.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of the coagulation and homogenization in bulking sludge thickening of paper manufacturing plant using DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) and gravitational sedimentation. The effects of parameters such as dosage of coagulant and homogenization time were examined. The results showed that DAF and sedimentation was affected aluminum sulfate and anion polymer coagulant differently. At the optimum dosage of aluminum sulfate, thickening efficiency of DAF and sedimentation process were increase 1.25 time and 2.02 time, respectively. At the optimum dosage of anion polymer coagulant, thickening efficiency of DAF process was increase 1.35 time, but thickening efficiency at sedimentation was 1.06 time. When anion polymer coagulant of 0.5 mg/l was added in DAF process, water content of sludge was decreased from 96.6% to 90.7% in dewatering process using Buchner funnel test device. After homogenization(20500 rpm, 10 min), Sauter mean diameter of sludge floc was decreased from 631 ${\mu}m$ to 427 ${\mu}m$, however increase of flotation efficiency by DAF was only 1.09 time.

  • An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the potential of flotation process for the secondary clarifier of an activated sludge process. Flotation techniques, applied in this study, include electrofloation (EF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $35{\mu}m$ in average and diffuser flotation (DF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $55{\mu}m$ in average. The batch experiments were done with activated sludge displaying various characteristics. It was shown that the efficiency of solids/liquid separation was reduced as the diluted sludge volume index ($DSVI_{30}$) of activated sludge increased. The dependency, however, gradually decreased as the gas to solids (G/S) ratio increased. Thickening efficiency of EF was more than 2~10 times and DF process was more than 1.5~5 times as compared with gravity sedimentation (GS). Stable sludge blanket was maintained regardless of sludge settleability when the G/S ratio was 0.019 in the EF. On the other hand, Serious deterioration in the sludge blanket was observed in the DF depends on G/S ratio and sludge settleability. And For EF and DF, the suspended solids concentration of effluent was not nearly influenced on settleability of activated sludge and more clear than GS. A biological nutrient removal (BNR) process, combined with EF as a secondary clarifier was operated for three months. The mean MLSS (mixed liquid suspended solids) concentration in the reactor and mean solids concentration of return sludge were estimated to be 5,340 mg/L and 16,770 mg/L, respectively. The water quality of effluent was considerably stable and low value was accomplished, that was, standard suspended solids concentration $0.07{\pm}0.51mg/L$ and standard turbidity $1.44{\pm}0.56NTU$. The EF could be applicable for enhancement of efficiency of activated sludge system as well as improvement of the water quality of effluent.

  • Effects of grinding time and chemicals dosage in arsenic removal from contaminated paddy soil in China were investigated using lab scale attrition and froth flotation combining process. Arsenic concentration in the field soil was 76.51 mg/kg, exceeding Korean and Chinese standards, and predominant arsenic compounds fraction in sequential extraction was "residual" (over 80%). After wet sieving, soil with >2 mm and < 0.038 mm showed concentration lower than 'Warning Level' in Korea. Soil with 0.038-0.075 mm, showing the highest concentration, was discarded since it occupied minor weight fraction (10.1%). Thus soil between 0.075 and 2 mm was only used in the combining process. The highest Arsenic concentration in progeny fragments smaller than 0.038 mm reached up to 981.66 mg/kg after 5 min of attrition. Optimal dosage of collector ($C_5H_{11}OCS_2K$) and modifier ($Na_2S$ and $CuSO_4$) in froth flotation process for the selective separation of the chipped progeny particles from the parent fragments were determined both as 200 g/ton. Arsenic removal efficiency in froth flotation process was 38.47% and it was increased to 72.74% in additional flotation process, scavenging. Average arsenic concentration after overall process - wet sieving, attrition and froth flotation - was estimated to 16.45 mg/kg.

  • Although cleaner and cheaper deinking of ONP could be performed at the neutral or low alkaline condition excessive loss from froth-flotation is unavoidable and so reduction of alkali or caustic soda dosage sacrifices recycling yield. Now the new trade-off regarding alkali dosage versus flotation yield is urgently required in order to set the optimized neutral or low alkaline deinking process of ONP. Lipase from Thermomyces Lanuginosus has an effect on desizing and deacetylation reaction and it could be applied to the stock of pre flotation secondary stage in order to reduce the flotation reject without the sacrifice of optical properties of flotation accepts. Instead of inorganic base, lipase could be applied as a biochemical catalyst for the selective modification of valuable hydrophobic particles in deinking stock, for example cellulose fines and inorganic fillers covered by hydrophobic additives or contaminants. When the enzymatic hydrolysis of ester bond could be made on the surface of hydrophobic particulates, unwanted float of fine particles could be prevented. Now the enhancement of flotation selectivity or the modification of the hydrophobicity of deinking stock is expected to be promoted by the enzymatic pre treatment. And the reduction of recycling cost with the saves of raw material, recovered paper would be possible as a result.

  • The object of this study was to determine the surface energy of hydrophobically modified micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC) with AKD and evaluate the effect of surface energy of the solid particles dispersed in aqueous medium on flotation efficiency. Especially to eliminate the complication derives from the diverse parameters of solid particles including particle size, type, etc. MCC's modified with AKD have been used. The surface energy Parameters were calculated from advancing contact angles of apolar and polar liquids on MCC pellets using the Lifshitz-van der Waals acid-base (LW:AB) approach. Total surface energy of hydrophobic MCC ranged from 46.19 mN/m to 48.60 mN/m. The contribution of the acid-base components to the total surface energy ranged form 13% to 17% for hydrophobic MCC's. The effect of surface characteristics on the flotation efficiency was evaluated. It was shown that there exist critical values of surface energies to increase flotation efficiency. Total surface energy and polar component of solid particles should be lower than 47 mN/m and 7 mN/m, respectively, for effective removal in the flotation process.

  • Dissolved air flotation (DAF) has been well known for the gravity separation process. The solids to be separated are transferred from the water body to the water surface using micro-air bubbles. DAF has also been used for enhancing solids-liquid separation of industrial and municipal wastewater by adding a its unit parallel to a sedimentation unit to reduce the hydraulic loading in the sedimentation clarifier. This study was to investigate flotation characteristics of activated sludge by the recent DAF technique without chemical agents. In addition, the effect on temperature in flotation of activated sludge and the thickening degree of activated sludge were studied.
