  • Surfactants are the surface-active molecules that display amphiphilicity, Because of this surface activity and amphiphilicity, surfactants have been used in wide industrial applications such as foods, detergents, cosmetics, medicine, polymers, paints, flotation, textiles. These days, their applications extend to high-technology industries such as microelectronics, magnetic recording material, advanced batteries, novel separations, etc. As new applications of surfactants are found and the demand of the surfactants increases, surfactant industry has been more pressed to face a formidable challenge, which is to develop surfactants that are envirionmentally friendly. In this regard biosurfactants may be alternatives to chemical surfactants, since biosurfactants are biologically compatible, more biodegradable, less toxic, and highly specific. Because of these excellent advantages over those of chemical surfactants, much efforts have been made in biosurfactant research. This article reviews biosurfactants in several aspects, that is, their definition, structures, properties, applications, and prospects.

  • The pre-concentration and determination of ultratrace arsenic in water samples was studied by the precipitate flotation technique. The arsenic in 1.0l of water sample, in which all suspended materials were filtered out, was coprecipitated together with La(OH)$_3$ precipitates at pH 8.5${\pm}$0.1. After the precipitate was made to be hydrophobic by adding mixed surfactant of 1 : 8 mole ratio of sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate, it was floated with the aid of tiny bubbles of nitrogen gas in a flotation cell. The floated precipitate was quantitatively collected on a micropore glass filter by the suction, dissolved with small volume of 1.0M sulfuric acid, and accurately diluted to 25.00ml with a de-ionized water. Total arsenic was spectrophotometrically determinated by forming silver diethyldithiocarbamate complex of arsine generated from arsenic in the concentrated solution. The calibration curve was linear up to 20ng/ml in the original solution. Analytical results showed that contents of arsenic in a campus wastewater and a river water were 8.2ng/ml and l.0ng/ml, respectively, and their recoveries were 93${\%}$ and 90${\%}$ in water samples which a given amount of arsenic was added into. From above result, it could be concluded that this method was applicable to the determination of arsenic in various kinds of water at low ng/ml levels.

  • DABF(Dissolve Air Flotation with Ball Filter) is developed as the DAF with the addition of a fiber ball at the lower part of the DAF. The DABF with a capacity of 4,500 ㎥/h was constructed at Gijang SWRO plant in Busan. Since the ball filter has high filtration rate, the loading rate of DABF was designed from 20 to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. When one DABF basin is in the back washing mode, the loading rate of other two DABF basins is increased to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. Turbidity at the BF outlet in DABF is <2 NTU at turbidity of 5-10 NTU at the BF inlet. If there is no algae bloom and turbidity is low in raw seawater, only BF in DABF is operated and meets <2 NTU at the BF outlet. Even if BF is operated at high hydraulic loading rates, no significant differential pressure increases and reduction in the turbidity removal rate is minimal in a day. Thus, DABF is the pre-treatment technology that provides stable water quality even with BF onlyoperation without DAF operation. Compared with the DAF, DABF requires additional facilities such as valves, piping, and drainage systems for backwashing the BF. But in terms of footprint and operating costs, DABF has more advantages than DAF. With DABF application, the load of the downstream filtration equipment is decreased so that the capacity of the filtration equipment can be reduced. Also, if the downstream filtration equipment is to be maintained the same regardless of DABF, the operating cost of DABF is less than DAF.

  • The concentration and determination of trace phosphate ion was studied by $La(OH)_3$ coprecipitaiton. Phosphate ions in 1.0L samples were coprecipitated with lanthanium hydroxide at pH 9.5 adjusted with ammonia solution. The precipitates were floated with the aid of mixed surfactant(1:8 sodium oleate/sodium dodecyl sulfate) and nitrogen gas bubbles. The floated precipitate was collected in suction flask from the solution. The precipitate were washed with dil. ammonia solution and dissolved in sulfuric acid. The phosphate ion in the concentrated solution was finally determinated by UV/VIS spectrophotometry using the molybdenium blue method. The proposed method could be applied to the determination of phosphate ion in tap water and river water.

  • The samples used for this work were low grade c1ay($Fe_2O_3$ : 2.90%, $TiO_2$ : 1.65%) produced from Youngsan-po district, and for the iron-bearing impurities removal having a bad influence on Kaoline sample was carried out column floatatoin using Oleic acid, Potassium oleat, Aero 840 promotor, Aero 870 promotor and Keroseneas collectors. For removal of the iron-vearing impurities from the kaoline, investigated first chemical composition size distribution of Kaoline sample, also performanced a basic study on pulp density, collector and pH change on a sort of frother. The flotation separation of impurities from kaoline can be achieved by using both oleic acid and Aero 840 promotor as collectors within narrow acid limits(pH 2-3). Pine oil was more effective frother than MIBC with olelic acid as aa collector.

  • This study examined the effects of multiple recycling on deinkability and properties of recycled paper from laser computer printout(LCPO). First, alkaline paper with a 20% printed area was disintegrated by TAPPI standard disintegrator. After dewatering , the pulp was followed by flotation, handsheet making, and drying at room temperature, in order. A sequence of printing , disintegrating, flotating , handsheet making and drying was one recycling cycle and this cyclic treatment was repeateed from zero to five times. The residual ink content in recycled handsheets by SEM-EDXA and Py-GC analyseswas increased slightly as recycling number increase. After five cycles of recycling the ISO brightness of recycled handsheets dropped to about 90% of the original brightness. However, it had a gain of 10% in opacity. The most of physical properties of recycled handsheets were decreased as recycling numbers increase except of for tear strength.

  • The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.

  • The effect of wettability of deinking agents which formed with various nonionic surfactants against the pulp fibers and ink particles were studied, And the effect of flotation processes on the deinking were also investigated. The wettabilities of the deinking agents against the water and ink particles were measured by Washburn tube and sessile drop techniques, respectively. As the water absorption increased (i.e., hydrophilicity increased), the ink removal increased, which indicates that the ink removal is strongly affected by the detachment process due to the swelling of the pulp. Also, when the contact angle of air/ink/deinking agent increased, the hydrophobicity of the ink particles increased, the efficiency of the ink removal and the brightness increased.

  • Algal blooms of cyanobacteria (blue-green Algae) due to the eutrophication of rivers and lakes can cause not only the damage by its biological toxins but also the economic loss in drinking water treatment. The natural algae coagulant, a commercial product known as W.H. containing the algicidal and allelopathic material derived from oak, can control algal problems proactively through the coagulation flotation process. However, because there have been no applications of the process for pre-treatment in drinking water plants, we could find no report on the optimum injection dose of W.H.. In this study, we have conducted several sets of jar-tests while changing W.H. dose and concentration of chl-a for (1) Han-river samples and (2) subcultured cyanobacteria samples, and monitored the removal mechanisms of algae intensively. Based on these jar-test results, two linear equations with variables of chl-a and turbidity have been deduced to predict the optimal W.H. dose after the multiple regression analysis using IBM-SPSS. Also, prototypes of automatic control logic have been suggested to inject the optimal W.H. dose promptly in response to the variation of water quality.

  • In biological wastewater treatment, high lipid concentrations can inhibit the activity of microorganisms critical to the treatment process and cause undesirable biomass flotation. To reduce the inhibitory effects of high lipid concentrations, a two-phase anaerobic system, consisting of an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) and an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor in series, was applied to synthetic dairy wastewater treatment. During 153 days of operation, the two-phase system showed stable performance in lipid degradation. In the ASBR, a 13% lipid removal efficiency and 10% double-bond removal efficiency were maintained. In the UASB, the chemical oxygen demand (COD), lipid, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) removal efficiencies were greater than 80%, 70%, and 95%, respectively, up to an organic loading rate of 6.5 g COD/l/day. No serious operational problems, such as significant scum formation or sludge washout, were observed. Protein degradation was found to occur prior to degradation during acidogenesis.
