  • Two Cretaceous(80-90 Ma) non-marine sedimentary basins, Namyang and Tando Basins, are distributed in the Namyang area, Hwaseonggun and in the Tando area, Ansanshi, Kyungki Province, Korea. The Namyang and Tando Basins are composed of 10 facies, which are pooped into 5 facies associations(FA). FA I consists of massive conglomerate facies, normally graded conglomerate facies and reversely graded conglomerate facies, which is interpreted to have been formed by laminated sandstone facies, massive conglomerate facies(channelized), which is thought to have been formed by sheet flow, stream flow and suspension sedimentation in an alluvial/braided plain environment. FA III consists of massive mudstone(pebbly) facies, laminated mudstone facies, massive sandstone facies and is interbedded by channel-fill conglomerate. It is interpreted to have been deposited by suspension settling during flooding and channel-fill deposition in a floodplain environment. FA IV consists of massive conglomerate facies, normally graded conglomerate facies, massive sandstone facies, normally graded sandstone facies, and laminated sandstone facies and is interbedded with mudstone facies. It is thought to have been deposited by debris flow and turbidity current in a fan-delta environment. FA V consists of massive mudstone facies, laminated mudstone facies, laminated sandstone facies and is interbedded by massive conglomerate bed. It is thought to have been formed by suspension sedimentation and low-density turbidity current in a lake. In the Namyang Basin FA I is distributed in the eastern and southern margin of the basin, FA II in the middle part of the basin as north-south tending band. and FA III in the western part. In the Tando Basin FA II is distributed in the middle part of eastern margin and in the northwestern margin, FA IV in the southwestern part, and FA V in the central part. Correlation of the facies associations shows that FA I and II in the Namyang Basin are distributed in the lower to middle part of stratigraphic sequence and FA III in the upper part of the sequence whereas FA II and IV in the Tando Basin are in the lower to middle part and FA V in the upper part of the sequence. These patterns of facies associations distribution suggest that the Namyang Basin was developed as an alluvial fan and alluvial/braided plain at first and then evolved into a floodplain whereas the Tando Basin was developed as a fan-delta and alluvial/braided plain at first and then evolved into a lake environment.

  • Placer gold deposits is mainly distributed in the Takaoi area. The alluvium is unconsolidated or semiconsolidated deposit consisting of gravel, sand, and soil beds in ascending order. They unconformably overlies the Carboniferous-Permian schist and Cretaceous granodiorite substratum. Based on detailed facies analysis, the alluvium can be interpreted as a typical fluvial deposits containing gravel and sand beds of channel-fill unit and soil deposit of floodplain. Gold grains are included mainly in the gravel bed and vein quartz is only contained gold among all kinds of gravels. These features indicates that the source rock of the gold grain is vein quartz and gold grains are separated from vein quartz during transport and abrasion. The reserves of gold in this area reach to at least 792 kg.

  • The Eonyang section is located at the confluent area of Samdong River to Taehwa River in Sinhwa-ri, Samnam-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan-si, Korea. Physical analyses such as the OSL age dating, magnetic susceptibility and grain size analysis were performed. Coarse grains in the upper section were deposited by the aeolian processes from the local sources and the grains in the lower section by the fluvial processes. The Eonyang section shows the large differences such as the irregularity in the variations of magnetic susceptibility, large deviations in the Y values and very poor sorting values from the loess sediments in Bongdong, Geochang and Daecheon in Korea. These characteristics in the Eonyang section suggest the multi-source areas such as the Chinese Loess Plateau and nearby floodplain or the influences by the other processes. The loess sediments of Eonyang section were formed during the period from the late MIS 3 to MIS 2.

  • The Palgye Plain, located in Chilgok, Buk-gu, Daegu-si, is a floodplain by Palgye-River rising from Mt. Ga one of the mountains in Ring Typed Mountains of Mt. Palgong. The geomorphic surfaces in the study area can be divided into the natural levee, back marsh and confluent fan, and the natural levee and fan have been used as important regions of human activities since the Bronze Age. The alluvium sediments of Palgye-River can be subdivided into the bedrocks, lower gravel deposits, lower sandy deposits, lower silty deposits, upper sand and gravel deposits, and upper silty deposits from the bottom according to the formative ages. The lower gravel deposits correlated to the last glacial stage and the rest to Holocene, respectively. Confluent fans were also formed during the last glacial stage. Moreover, The landscape with land use after 20C was changed to apartment area due to civilization differently from which reflected the characteristics of geomorphic surfaces in the past.

  • Among natural disasters that lead to devastating damage, floods from heavy rains have been causing hundreds of victims and a great loss of their properties every year. Basically, there is no other way to deal with the problem considering it is a kind of natural disaster, but more specific studies for a preventive measure of flood has been in progress so far. However, the controversy over the problem is going on due to the objection of some environmental organizations or some economic reasons. The key important thing is select the most suitable area for a preventive measure of flood where a huge amount of national budget is put into, which is also the factor to judge it would be success or failure, therefore, in this study, it is made to be profitable to decide the priority order in a plan for preventing disasters by drawing more accurate data conveniently from the connection with GIS when you get some information of configuration of the ground and using them into the economic analysis for flood prevention industries.

  • A natural disaster occupies a considerable part among various damages, and the damage of human lifes and property by heavy rain extends to hundreds, and billions in every you. In old times, flood was mainly occurred in big river or sudden slope, but these days, the damage of concentrated heavy rain is being extended to a city. Recently, very big floods occurred continuously, so real time submersion expectation system which can expect the inundation boundary according to the scale is needed so as to protect lifes and property. In this study, in and around Jungrang river, where the damage of flood is big, is chosen as a sample, and the submersion of that area is expected by analyzing the flux and overflowing using DEM, and connecting with Web GIS in real time.

  • Liao River with the largest basin area in the northeastern part of China has constructed huge floodplain along the lower reach. Especially a vast marsh was developed around estuaries and coastline near Liaodong Bay. The marsh was called as Yotaek(or Liaoze) before the modern time, which is meaningful for understanding human life since prehistorian times. By the analysis of historical documents and geomorphic data, it can be assumed that the height of Yotaek of landward boundary reached 20~30m from Heishan to Liaoyang during Han dynasty. The shoreline of 7,000 yr BP is estimated to coincide with the contour line between 20m and 30m at present. And the ancient shoreline during Christ era indicates 10m.a.s.l., which is corresponding to the seaside boundary of the Yotaek. The shoreline of Liaodong Bay was progressed seaward 30km/ka during 1000~1100 AD, while 10~40km/ka during late 19 century ~ early 20 century.

  • Recently, the flood damages including losses of human lifes and property have been rapidly increased according to extreme floods. And we know that the flood control project is needed for diminishing flood damages. However, we have had the lacks in a reasonable methodology for the economic analysis of food control project. This study aims to improve the existing economic analysis method for flood control project. So, first of all, we understand the problems of existing economic analysis and investigate the methodologies of foreign countries. Based on that, the Multi-Dimensional Flood Damage Analysis(MD-FDA) is developed in this study. The survey of properties on the floodplain is conducted, then the damage rate obtained by evaluating the monetary values of surveyed property is applied, and the expected flood damage is calculated. Also by considering damage area in the floodplain as well as spatial distribution of inundated depth using GIS, the flood damages are evaluated more accurately than existing method. From the study, we know that the MD-FDA can improve the problems of existing method and evaluate the reasonable flood damages by using updated nation리 statistics.
