  • To clarify the varietal differences of resistance to complete flooding, physiological characteristics in relation to flooding resistance in each growth stage of rice plants, the present study was carried out. The rate of survival after flooding at seeding stage of rice plants of the cultivar 'FR 13A' and Ind. X Jap. cultivars were 91.8% and 33.8% to 40%, respectively, while the Japonica varieties were completely dead. The tolerant varieties which has higher rate of survival showed the higher $O_2$ release, the higher catalase activity and lower peroxidase activity according to flooding treatment. Japonica type varieties showed the higher elongation of plant during flooding, lower recovery of flooding damage and the abrupt decrease of yield according to the increase of flooding periods in comparision to Ind. X Jap. crossed varieties when they were flooded at the active tillering stage. When rice plants were flooded at the booting stage, Ind. X Jap. crossed varieties had the higher photosynthesis, respiratory rate, root oxidizing power, ethylene evolution and lower yield reduction in comparision to japonica varieties.varieties.

  • This technology is to let rainwater flow into a waterway that is located side gutter of a street with blocking garbage including cigarette butts at the same time. The first waterway is located beside the sidewalk and it enhances the water circulation in a city. This waterway is filled with aggregates and filter media, which removes fine dust that is washed out of the street and let water flow down to the earth. The second waterway is located beside the street and it retains rainwater temporarily with decreasing its flow speed. The second waterway shall reduce flooding damages by avoiding bottleneck situation in the street inlets and storm water pipelines which is the main causation of flooding in a city.

  • MANET is a dynamically reconfigurable wireless network with no fixed infrastructure (base station, or AP). In order to provide the data service in MANET, we need an efficient routing protocol to deliver the data to the wanted destination at a mobile node. A method of routing protocols called reactive routing protocol has recently got attention because of their low routing overhead. But a method of flooding broadcasts the packet to all of its neighbors. For this reason, each of the node has high routing overhead to route and keep path discovery. Accordingly in this paper, I propose an adaptive flooding scheme using N-hop look-ahead in MANET, md an optimal N value of doing flooding the packet to limited area. Because of being basically ignorant about topological changes, each of the node did not spontaneously cope with path alteration. But an efficient flooding scheme applying N-hop look-ahead is more resilient to topology changes than traditional algorithms. And also with this efficient flooding scheme, the simulation results demonstrate excellent reduction of routing overhead.

  • In order to select the water flooding-tolerant trees among Korean oaks, we cultivated the sapling of 6 deciduous oak species, Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata, under the water flooding treatment and the control, and analysed the growth difference among them. For comparing the growth between treatment and control, we measured 13 morphological and ecological traits, such as leaf Leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, shoot length, stem length, stem diameter, root length, plant length, leaf weight, stem weight, root weight, plant weight. Q. serrata have no growth difference between water flooding treatment and control, but the rest 5 species showed the growth reduction in water flooding treatment. Tolerance of oak species to water flooding was risen in order of Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata. Thus, among Korean deciduous oaks, it is desirable to plant Q. serrata for flood plain restoration of river.

  • This study investigates drying condition when a small fan is added to a operating the free-breathing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) with dry $H_2$ and Air. Polarization tests were conducted on PEMFCs at cell temperatures between 30 and $50^{\circ}C$ under dry operation. In the results, the cell performance strongly depended on the cell temperature and the cathode gas stoichiometric flow rates. The cell performance increases as cell temperature decreases from 50 to $30^{\circ}C$. In the domain where the stoichiometry of air is quite large, reduction of the concentration overpotential compensated the increased internal resistance due to drying. The maximum performance was obtained at the small air flow rate beyond which flooding occurs. This indicates that the fan should be operated in the stoichiometry domain with a well designed cell structure to avoid flooding.

  • BACKGROUND: Ammonia emissions from field-applied livestock manure are considered a threat to the environment worldwide. In Korea, a large amount of liquid manure was applied in the rice field before rice transplanting in order to reduce chemical fertilizer use. This study was conducted to provide the optimal flooding time after liquid manure application in an attempt to minimize ammonia emission. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ammonia emission from paddy field applied with liquid pig manure following different flooding time was measured using the dynamic chamber method. The five treatments used were : application of liquid pig manure to paddy field in flooding condition (F0T); one day (F1T) and three days (F3T) after flooding; without flooding (NF), and flooding without the application of liquid pig manure (control). Among the treatment, the highest ammonia emission was observed in F0T. The cumulative ammonia emission of F1T and F3T for 12 days were very similar and were about 4.7 times less than that of the F0T treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Ammonia emission in paddy field could be significantly reduced by liquid pig manure application after flooding rather than application of liquid pig manure in flooding condition. Therefore, flooding after liquid pig manure application would provide much more nitrogen for rice growth due to the reduction of ammonia emission.

  • Plant stress incurred by flooding was studied in terms of oxidative stress, using greened rice seedlings subjected to a complete submergence followed by re-exposure to air under illumination ($30W/m^2$). It appeared that shoot tissues of the seedlings suffered oxygen deficiency during the flooding treatment, pertinent to the general concept. Interestingly enough, however, membrane peroxidation in shoots was enhanced by the submergence, as assessed by the content of 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and the re-aeration resulted in a rapid reduction of TBARS content. Such pattern of response was also seen in the change in the steady state level of $H_2O_2$. In contrast, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase that are involved in the detoxifying processes of superoxide in plant cells were significantly activated only during the re-aeration. These results allowed us to suggest the followings as a working hypothesis. Photorespiration-linked production of $H_2O_2$ may largely contribute to the increase in $H_2O_2$ level as well as TBARS production in shoots during the submergence. An abrupt re-supply of $CO_2$ by the re-aeration brings the photosynthetic apparatus back to full operation, suppressing photorespiration and probably causing a momentary, excess formation of superoxide and its dismutation product through side reaction, which gives rise to activating substrate-inducible antioxidative enzymes.

  • Urban flooding is usually caused by the surcharge of storm sewers. For that reason, domestic studies about urban flooding are concentrated on the simulation of urban drainage system. However these approaches that find the pipes which have insufficient drainage capacity are very approximate and unreasonable ways. In this study, an accurate mathematical modeling is developed to analyze the impacts of an urban inundation for both flood prevention and flood-loss reduction planning and it is verified by using the simulation of July 2001 flooding in Seoul. The result of this study can be used to construct fundamental data for a flood control plan and establish a urban flood forecasting/warning system.

  • Alkali-surfactant polymer flooding has become an important technique to improve oil recovery following the development of oil fields while the function of emulsification in enhanced oil recovery is rarely considered in the existing mathematical model for numerical simulation. In this paper, the mechanism of improving the recovery of the emulsification was analyzed in ASP flooding, and a relatively perfect mathematical model with deep filtration-theory was established, in which oil-water volume equation, saturation equation, viscosity equation, and permeability reduction equation are included. The new model is used to simulate the actual block of an oil field; the simulated results of the new model and an old model without considering the emulsification are compared with the actual well history. It is found that new model which is easy to be realized in numerical simulation has a high precision fitting, and the effect of adding oil and decreasing water is obvious. The sensitivity of emulsification was analyzed, and the results show that the water reducing funnel becomes wider and the rate of water cut decreases rapidly with the increase of emulsifying capacity, and then the rate of recovery slows down. The effect of increasing oil and decreasing water is better, and the degree of recovery increases. The emulsification of the ASP flooding is maintained at a moderate level, which corresponds to ${\Phi}=0.2$ in the new model, and the emulsification is applied to realize the general mathematical quantitative description, so as to better guide the oilfield development.

  • This study was conducted to response the growth, seed yield, nitrogen content and different cation content of two soybean, flooding-tolerant cv. Pungsannamulkong (PNSK) and flooding-sensitive cv. Tawonkong (TWK) when these were subjected to flooding stress at R1 stage for cultivation in paddy field. Flooding, underground water levels (UWL) of 0 cm, 10 cm and 40 cm, was experimented from flowering time to harvest time. The dry matter and seed yield of soybean with UWL of 0 or 10 cm declined in comparison with UWL of 40 cm and these were more reduction in TWK than in PNSK. The amount of nitrogen uptake decreased in higher UWL and there was a high significant relationship $(R^2=0.872)$ between nitrogen content and seed yield at flooding stress. K content of leaf and stem in soybean plants had a small change with UWL but Ca content had a decrease (leaf and stem) or increase (root). Mn and Fe content were increased at higher UWL and were more in TWK than in PNSK.
