  • Associating polymers act as flocculants in colloidal suspensions, because the hydrophobic groups (hydrophobes) can adsorb onto particle surfaces and create intermolecular cross-linking. The steady-shear viscosity and dynamic viscoelasticity were measured for suspensions flocculated by multichain bridging of associating polymers. The effects of surfactant on the suspension rheology are studied in relation to the bridging conformation. The surfactant molecule behaves as a displacer and the polymer chains are forced to desorb from the particle surfaces. The overall effect of surfactant is the reduction of suspension viscosity. However, the additions of a small amount of surfactant to suspensions, in which the degree of bridging is low, cause a viscosity increase, although the number of chains forming one bridge is decreased by the forced desorption of associating polymer. Since the polymer chains desorbed from one bridge can form another bridge between bare particles, the bridging density over the system is increased. Therefore, the surfactant adsorption leads to a viscosity increase. The surfactant influences the viscosity in two opposing ways depending on the degree of bridging.

  • The floc strength of Escherichia coli was enhanced by adding water soluble polymer flocculants (BPA-5020 and BPA-5000) to the particulate flocculant (BPA-1000) as indicated by the increase in the shear index. The shear index of the E. coli flocs increased from 0.39 with the particulate flocculant alone to 0.94 with the particulate flocculant in conjunction with the water soluble polymer flocculant. In addition, the sedimentation rate of flocs was higher and the sedimented volume of flocs was smaller when the particulate flocculant was used with the water soluble polymer flocculant. When E. coli was flocculated first with the water soluble flocculant and the particulate flocculant was added later into the E. coli flocs formed, the sedimentation rate of the flocs was greater than that of any other combination. The shear index of the flocs was, however, independent of the sequence of the flocculant addition.

  • A new polymer technology commercialized with the name of Core Shell has been developed by Ondeo Nalco Company. Laboratory evaluations have demonstrated that Core Shell polymers produce a floc with high shear resistance, making them the flocculants of choice for modern high-speed paper machines. Core Shell polymers provide significant papermaking benefits, when used as single component or in combination with microparticles. At this time, the new program has been successfully applied on more than 60 paper and board machines across the world. Implementation of Core Shell polymers with or without a microparticle provided better and more stable retention values and improvements in paper quality, system cleanliness and machine runnability.

  • The harvesting of microalgae is a critical step that precedes biodiesel conversion. The most widely used harvesting technology is flocculation and floatation. In this study, the efficiency of the flocculants aluminum sulfate and poly aluminum chloride were evaluated for harvesting the alga Dunaliella tertiolecta in conjunction with dissolved air floatation. Using the jar test the optimum concentration range for aluminum sulfate was 1.0~1.5 g/L and for poly aluminium chloride, 1.5~2.0 g/L. The degree of coagulation was visualized by microscopy. Further analysis in combination with dissolved air floatation showed that the optimal concentration for aluminum sulfate was 1.1 g/L and for poly aluminum chloride, 1.6 g/L.

  • Oppositely charged polyelectrolytes are generally known to form sbalbe interpolymer complexs. Such polyelectrolyte complexes are high practical relevance in industrial applications as flocculants, coatings, and binders, as well as in biological systems and in biomedical applications. Most insoluble polyelectrolyte complexes seem to exhibit 1:1 charge stoichiometry, independent of the charge density on the macromolecules and the structure of their backbones, provided that all charged groups are accessible for electrostatic interactions. • Polymer latices, prepared from the emulsion polymerization of vinyl monomer compounds, are widely used for many industrial applications. Included among these are uses in paints, adhesives, flocculants, and heavy-duty plastics as well as their original use in synthetic rubber compounds. The emulsion polymerization process with chemical initiator has chemical disadvantage such as removal of initiator which was left after polymerization. In this study, polystyrene latex was prepared by using ultrasonic irradiation which generate the free radical, and then it was analyzed by GPC. Reaction temperature hardly have an effect on average molecular weight. Average molecular weight is increased by increasing amount of surfactant, i.e. SDS, but polydispersity is decreased. After 90 minutes of reaction time, increase and decrease of average molecular weight Is repeated. It is proposed that monodisperse polymer is obtained by controlling ultrasonic irradiation time and surfactant concentration.

  • The novel behavior of ferrate(VI) has received an increased attention for its possible applications in various purposes particularly in the treatment of waste/effluent waters. It possess relatively high oxidizing capacity and the reduced ferrate(VI) into Fe(III) again an important and useful precipitant, coagulant, flocculants and likely to be a good adsorbent via the formation of ferric hydroxide for various metal cations. Moreover, the non-toxic effect makes it a 'green chemical' and further enhances its widespread uses in various purposes. Here an attempt has been made to review the applications of ferrate(VI) in the treatment of waste waters and also its possible future applications in the wastewater treatment technology.

  • The flocculation characteristics of polyacrylamide base flocculants were estimated to reduce the moisture content of the dehydrated cakes. The dewaterability for sewage sludge was found to have a marked effect depending on the flocculant type, agitating speed and time, kind of dissolution water, etc. The optimal agitating speed and time were 700 rpm and 3 sec, respectively, in this experimental condition. and the dewaterability was proportion to the agitating speed upto 700rpm. When recycle water as the dissolution water was used, the solution viscosity of all kind of flocculants was decreased. However, the change of its viscosity are not proportioned to the dewaterabilities for each flocculant. Flocculation system of combinations of the first and sencond flocculation using single flocculant was investigated. Effects of the ratio of first and second dosage for dual flocculation on the dewaterability were also investigated. The optimum conditions of dual flocculation system are 75% and 50% as first dosages for low and high viscous flocculant for total dosage of common flocculation, respectively. Based on the results, an overall mechanism of dual flocculation system is proposed and it is envisaged that optimization of flocculation processes in this way can result in considerable savings in cost.

  • We researched in the optimization of unit process and the stabilization of discharged water quality through the treatment of the occurrence of wastewater classified by place of production which has high COD load and non degradable COD load in paper industry. As the result, using polymer, inorganic flocculants and alum at the same time is effective to advance the COD value through the colloid material removal with SS in the first treatment process. Moreover, it is determined to keep optimum of $FeCl_2/H_2O_2$ in the concentration of 1000 ppm in the ratio of 1/1. Because It is confirmed that to input excess chemicals using Fenton oxidation method gives adverse effect to water quality.

  • Flocculation-spectrophotometry and streaming current detector( SCD ) method were investigated and compared in order to determine the optimum dosages of synthetic cationic polymers of different charge density and molecular mass for the removal of humic acid. The optimum dosage for each of the polymers was determined with the dosage at which the lowest absorbance of humic acid was shown for the formal. and was determined with the dosage required during charge neutralization of humic acid for the latter It was in good agreement between both methods and there is a strong inverse correlation between the optimum dosage and charge density of the polymers, with highly charged polymer giving the lowest optimum dosage, pointing out the importance the charge neutralization. By flocculation-spectrophotometry, it was found that the absorbance of humid acid with the amount of each of the polymers dosed, changes sharply for polymers of high charge density, but changes rather broadly for polymers of low and middle charge density, Both methods showed that a stoichiometric correlation exists between the optimum dosage of each of the cationic polymers and the negatively charged humic acid.
