The structure of a variable liquid column oscillator(a VLCO) is analogous to that of the tuned liquid column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. The VLCO is a system absorbing high kinetic energy of accelerated motions of the multiple floating bodies in the effect of air springs occurred by installation of inner air chambers. Thus, VLCO can improve the efficiency of energy than wave energy converters of the activating object type made in Pelamis Company. In this research, the experiment was performed in two models of same draft. The one is that weights were filled, and the other is that water was filled. The numerical results were estimated by assuming that do not exist internal flow, and the results were compared with the results of experiments.
A 50 kW class rotating body type wave energy converter consisted of two floating bodies and a PTO (Power Takeoff) unit is studied. As an wave energy extractor, the body is designed to have a VLCO (Variable Liquid-Column Oscillator) having a liquid filled U-tube with air chambers. Owing to the oscillation of the liquid in the U-tube caused by the air spring effect of the air chambers, the amplitude of response of the VLCO becomes significantly amplified for a target wave period. The PTO converts the rotational moment introduced from the relative motion of the hinged bodies to an hydraulic power by means of a cylinder. A high pressure accumulator, hydraulic motor and a generator are equipped in the PTO to convert the hydraulic power to electric power. A control law for adjusting the oscillation period of the VLCO is proposed for the efficient operation of the VLCO with various wave conditions. It is found that the effect of the air spring has an important role to play in making the oscillation of the VLCO match with the ocean wave. In this way, the wave energy converter equipped with the VLCO provides the most effective mode for extracting energy from the ocean wave.
Focused on the performance of interactivity in the appreciation of media art, this study is associated with the continually changed art texts and a participator's physical reactions to savor the art. Digital works of art emphasizing interactivity usually decentralize and disperse the responsibility and the central role for creating and producing the art works. Proper procedure of the work is generated by actions such as clicking the mouse, controlling the joy stick or actual movement of anticipators' bodies. The art works are influenced by participators' interactivity, which makes the leading roles and the responsibility for creating art scattered and divided. These features are similar with those of the 'Rhizome' which Gilles Deleuze(1925~1995) and Felix Guattari(1930~1992) have discussed. In their argument, 'Rhizome' is an interval or being 'between', which keeps changing. 'Rhizome' is a state in which the individual and the work of art never reach the conclusion, only a phenomenon of eternally altering. Like 'Rhizome', this sort of art work has the decentralized system, opens for several directions, and activates the system which is changeable as linked items increased or decreased. These works stimulate the individual to perform and act while appreciating the art piece. In terms of processing and preceeding, interactivity is the important equipment and catalyzer. Through these procedures, the pieces can be the 'floating work of art' combined and condensed with the whole participators' reactions. The 'floating work of art' is neither the expression of an individual nor that of one particular group. Multidimensional influence of the web is the web which is constantly reorganizing and producing in its connective state. This connective state is activated by interactivity. The Rhizomatic system embodies the floating work of art process. Due to each individual perceiving art in individualistic terms, there is no dominating powers or central points. I regard this art works possessing above traits as the work of art with Rhizomatic system. The work of art with the Rhizomatic system is embodied through interactivity and because physical action activates the process of appreciation, a participator can actually experience and practice the philosophy. Ultimately the Rhizomatic speculation occurs during the interactivity of appreciating the Rhizomatic art pieces. The Rhizomatic system penetrates into the intuitive area beyond our recognition and thoughts, as we are engaged in the connective process. With the methods and manners of interactive art, we can possibly reconsider the system as a tool in which the participator is directly able to link experience and theory to the philosophies of Deleuze and Guattari.

In the vibration analysis of submerged or floating bodies such as ships and offshore structures, the coupled system between fluid and structure should be considered using the compatibility conditions on the wetted surface. It is well known that the hydroelastic vibration analysis of structures in contact with fluid can be done by applying the finite element method(FEM) to structures and the boundary element method(BEM) to the fluid domain. However, such an approach is impractical due to the characteristics of the fully coupled added mass matrix of fluid on the entire wetted surface. To overcome this difficulty, an efficient approach based on a reanalysis scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed method can be applied for cases of higher local modes and beam-like modes for which three-dimensional reduction factors are not known. The three dimensional reduction factors are not needled and thus the restrictions can be removed in the analyses of non-beam like modes or local vibration modes by considering fluid-structure interaction. The validity and calculation efficiency of the proposed method are proved through numerical examples.
The radiation problem for oscillating bodies on the free surface has been formulated by the over-determined Green integral equation, where the boundary condition on the free surface is satisfied by adopting the Kelvin-type Green function and the irregular frequencies are removed by placing additional control points on the free surface surrounded by the body. The B-Spline based higher order panel method is then applied to solve the problem numerically. Because both the body geometry and the potential on the body surface are represented by the B-Splines, that is in polynomials of space parameters, the unknown potential can be determined accurately to the order desired above the constant value. In addition, the potential expressed in B-Spline can be differentiated analytically to get the velocity on the surface without introducing any numerical error. Sample computations are performed for a semispherical body and a rectangular box floating on the free surface for six-degrees of freedom motions. The added mass and damping coefficients are compared with those by the already-validated constant panel method of the same formulation showing strikingly good agreements.
Wave load prediction at zero forward speed using finite depth Green function is a well-established method regularly used in the offshore and marine industry. The forward speed approximation in deep water condition, although with limitations, is also found to be quite useful for engineering applications. However, analysis of vessels with forward speed in finite water depth still requires efficient computing methods. In this paper, a method for analysis of wave induced forces and corresponding motion on freely floating three-dimensional bodies with low to moderate forward speed is presented. A finite depth Green function is developed and incorporated in a 3D frequency domain potential flow based tool to allow consideration of finite (or shallow) water depth conditions. First order forces and moments and mean second order forces and moments in six degree of freedom are obtained. The effect of hull flare angle in predicting added resistance is incorporated. This implementation provides the unique capability of predicting added resistance in finite water depth with flare angle effect using a Green function approach. The results are validated using a half immersed sphere and S-175 ship. Finally, the effect of finite depth on a tanker with forward speed is presented.
Labyrinthulids are unicellular heterotrophic marine microalgae. Two labyrinthulid strains, L4 and L75, which produce generous amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs), were isolated from leaves floating in the coastal areas of Quang Ninh province, Vietnam, and Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, respectively. Both strains had spindle-shaped cells surrounded by ectoplasmic networks. Numerous oil bodies were observed in each cell, mostly in the vicinity of cell membranes. When soybean oil or soybean lecithin was used as a carbon source with peptone as a nitrogen source, the proportion of PUFAs reached 25-30% and 50-56% for L4 and L75, respectively. After 14 days of growth at $25^{\circ}C$, L4 produced 0.3 mg PUFAs/g-agar in PYA-SBO medium and 0.6 mg PUFAs/g-agar in PYA-SBL medium. In comparison, L75 produced 0.2 mg PUFAs/g-agar in both types of media. The differences between the two strains included changes in cellular morphology and the capacity for attaching tightly to fibers when cultured in liquid PYA medium containing 2% SBL. In addition, when the strains were grown under the same conditions, L4 had a higher growth rate and produced more PUFAs than L75.

The present paper introduced a computer program, called WISH, which is based on a time-domain Rankine panel method. The WISH has been developed for practical use to predict the linear and nonlinear ship motion and structural loads in waves. The WISH adopts three different levels of seakeeping analysis: linear, weakly-nonlinear and weak-scatterer approaches. Later, WISH-FLEX has been developed to consider hydroelasticity effects on hull-girder structure. This program can solve the springing and whipping problems by coupling between the hydrodynamic and structural problems. More recently this development has been continued to more diverse problems, including the motion responses of multiple adjacent bodies, the effects of seakeeping in ship maneuvering, and the floating-body motion in finite-depth domain with varying bathymetry. This paper introduces a brief theoretical and numerical background of the WISH package, and some validation results. Also several applications to real ships and offshore structures are shown.

Clearances are essential for the assemblage of mechanisms to allow the relative motion between the joined bodies. This clearance exists due to machining tolerances, wear, material deformations, and imperfections, and it can worsen the mechanism performance when the precision and smoothly-working are intended. Energy is a subject which is less paid attention in the area of clearance. The effect of the clearance on the energy of a flexible slider-crank mechanism is investigated in this paper. A clearance exists in the joint between the slider and the coupler. The contact force model is based on the Lankarani and Nikravesh model and the friction force is calculated using the modified Coulomb's friction law. The hysteresis damping which has been included in the contact force model dissipates energy in clearance joints. The other source for the energy loss is the friction between the journal and the bearing. Initial configuration and crank angular velocity are changed to see their effects on the energy of the system. Energy diagrams are plotted for different coefficients of friction to see its influence. Finally, considering the coupler as a flexible body, the effect of flexibility on the energy of the system is investigated.
